ORIGINAL: 944 lux OK, I've prety much decided that the black one isn't for me. Heres another car I've found. Bit of a drive away, but possibly worth it. I've spoken briefly with the seller who tells me the bonnet struts are weak and could do with replacing, the sunroof leaks and the passenger door pull is missing. He also said there is evidience of paintwork over the years, and evidence of the sills being repaired but to a good standard. Other than that everything works as it should. The tyres are a matching set of budget tyres (I think he said CEAT) that he says are OK for grip in the wet. What are peoples opinions on this one?

Looks more promising, and if you have the time and inclination then it could be worth a look. The front doesn't match though (hard to tell from a photo, but the shut lines look all wrong to me, and I'm not sure the colours match). This may imply a cheap repair after a front-end stuff, so go in with your eyes open. Having said that, few cars get to this age without some paint, and the guy admitted to it on the 'phone, so you know what you are in for. I've said it before on here, but nice people sell nice cars. You are buying the owner as much as the car; if he lives in a well-maintained house, which is clean and things look well looked-after, it is likely to be an OK car. If he lives in a shack, with old tyres in the front garden and a half-staved dog living in the filthy lounge, along with some semi-clothed children eating from cold mcdonalds packages, then the car isn't likely to be a good'un either ... this one looks like it is being sold by a dealer, who claims it is his own car. So ... tread carefully. Have a look, ask lots of questions, and look at everything including the car. If you aren't familiar with 944's then think about paying for a pre-purchase inspection, or asking if someone on here would be happy to eyeball it before you buy it. I'm about 60 miles away so abit far although the train links are good and B upon T could be a nice day out. 944 Lux (man), I'm in EH24 - would be happy to try to go with you to "more local" cars if you wanted a second opinion but Berwick is perhaps unlikely in the next short while.

simkin911 - that's a generous offer. I would be driving through from West Lothian so could pick you up en-route if that works for you. I would be going through at a weekend to view this car. For some reason the seller of this car has become difficult to contact, although he is highly recommended on a Mazda MX-5 forum that I'm on.

Yeah, we do have an MX-5! It's a 2004 mk2.5 Sport in Strato Blue. Cracking car and can't see us ever parting with it, especially since I paid a lot of money over the summer to get the rear arches, lower rear sills and a few other blemishes attended to. Pretty shocking for such a new car to suffer, but apparantly it is common on them. It currently wears a hardtop and doesn't go out in the snow! Only problem with the silver one just now is that Steve appears to be unobtainable by phone or email at the moment .

Good news - the seller is a poster of this forum! I'd be happy to help with a 2nd eye if it would help and I'm around to go (although a 4 month old baby is taking up a fair amount of attention at present). I only live 5 mins away from the city bypass really so easy pick up from West Lothian. Will PM you with my contact details although, regrettably, this weekend may be too soon for me.

Hi folks, I'm the chap who's selling the Zermatt Silver 944 referred to here- small world indeed. Its definitely slightly odd reading about people trying to work whether the seller is a good guy or a bad guy - and then realising that its you they are talking about! So yes, Im a dealer though I specialise in MX5s. First and foremost, I'm a car enthusiast and my great passion is Porsches: its decidely cheaper to have a driveway full of MX5s rather than Porsches, so they make more business sense at the moment. My own personal toys are a 944 S2 (my everyday car) and a Boxster S( owned for four years as a weekend car) and have previously owned numerous 944s and a lovely 964 which sold to someone on here. I don't live in a shack though I do have a couple of old tyres in the front garden and I don't have semi-clothed kids either but I know what you mean - the guy selling the car is a big part of the equation. I'm also sure that the interior on this car has been added at a later date - it just seems an odd colour combination (in fact I posted about this on here when I bought the car) though it looks good. Small world! Anyway, as you've probably guessed I've been in touch with Steve again and will be getting some more detailed photos next week. I certainly feel more confident about this car than the black one. If nothing else there's no ABS to be disconnected!!!

ORIGINAL: 944 gm small world - i know both of these cars - i looked at the black 944 with the S2 front a few years ago at a dealers in East Calder but thought it 'a bit rough' and took it no further. the silver 944 is for sale by a chap called Steve who occasionally posts on the forum here (sbloxxy) who i have also met on several occasions. he mostly deals in mx5s and recently sold one to a friend of mine (last week the alternator developed a fault which he is sorting out under warranty, no problem) when Dave went to pick up his new mazda, i had a quick look round the 944 and it does look to be in good condition, probably a good option to look at. do you currently have an mx5 ? i sold mine when i bought my first 944 but missed it so much i had to buy another, two impractical sports cars - mrs gm was so impressed !

Do you still have the red Mk.2 Mark? I was surprised to learn that even relatively late cars such as your were prone to such serious sill corrosion. Speaking of corrosion ([]), my 2.7 is a little closer to being finished, although it still hasnt been MOTd. I suspect that itll need new inner and outer sills before its finished. On the plus side I have a set of mint black leather sports bolsters and matching rears, for when it is. Ive also got a 968 Club Sport 'rear seat' which Im tempted to fit, although it doesnt belong, really. Simon
