5th gear did a reasonably scientific performance test on different types of cars and compared the effects of optimax, bp ultimate and I think bog standard juice and the conclusion was that optimax was the best by a significant amount but only gave a noticeable increase in bhp and torque in a high powered car, so it is pretty useless in terms of performance for your average car, but the cleaning effect might be worth it anyway. I switched to Optimax after using regular shell 95octane for a while and, while it's impossible for me to tell in normal day to day driving, I do feel it pulls better when I'm just relying on the torque to get me around while driving lazily.
