Overboost Question

Worth a try taking the BE off.

The ProMax wastegate is a modified standard one, hence the core charge that you may well be unable to claim if yours is faulty, which would make it £500 or £550 from memory.

To be honest even at £400 it simply isn't competitive with the TiAL which is a brand new part from the most respected WG manufacturer there is.

..... the TiAL which is a brand new part from the most respected WG manufacturer there is.

I wouldn't disagree with you (well I do sometimes) but the TiAL is a bit of a sod to keep in place because of the reduced number of fixings on the WG and the need for adaptor plates. They are great while they are working though.

I'm not convinced on the MBC. On the dyno Beaky achieves the set boost which then starts to decay immediately, in a very linear fashion. This is also apparent on other Turbots fitted with MBC's. I don't know what the alternative is, aside electronic boost control, but I had considered re-installing my Reliaboost - if I've still got it - to see if this reduces the decay. Granted I've only got a baby turbo, and one would expect decay as a result, but the decay seems too linear.

I have flanges welded on my exhaust to suit my (admittedly 46mm) TiAL, and I have to say I don't know why none of you guys struggling with adapter plates don't do the same. I'm pretty sure TiAL intend the WG to be bolted to the correct flanges without adapter plates and (as with the brake caliper adapter plates) they are not a very good solution it would seem. Simon at ESS even sounded intrested in fabbing an ESS system with TiAL flanges when I spoke to him at the RR day so he might even get it done for you FOC if you ask nicely and he can use your's as R&D.

That reminds me I found a DPW at Brands

I've got the Lindsay Racing DPW that is modified from the original. My original housing was cracked when I removed so couldn't claim back the core charge, but I bought it direct from Lindsay Racing while I was in the States with work so even with the core charge it was cheaper than buying from the UK. It'll be interesting to to see if this one develops a crack but the guys at Lindsay Racing said that it is relatively rare - but I suppose they would say that anyway. If it cracks again I will go for the TIAL.
If you don't want to go down the DPW route and just want a single port wastegate that works properly then LR also do a single port wastegate, but it costs the same as the DPW so I don't really see the point.
I don't seem to have a problem with my MBC. My boost peaks at 0.8bar at 3500 rpmish and tails off in a linear fashion to 0.6bar at red line but this is due to the capacity of the K26/6 turbo - it physically cannot deliver the volume of air to maintain boost at higher RPM. If the MBC is contributing to this pressure bleed I would guess I can only see it being a minor contribution.

Also bear in mind that even though you can run a DPW fine with standard ECU chips (i am) you can still get overboost on cold days (i have had it a couple of times). Andrew at Promax reckons this is due to the speed at which the boost comes in tricking the ECU into thinking it's overboosting as the ECU is still in single port wastegate mode, so new chips and 3bar FPR is the next mod on the list - basically the Promax level 2 kit.

That's the problem with turbo's - it's like throwing a pebble in a pond, you can very rarely make one apparently cheap mod without highlighting the next weakest link in the chain which will then niggle at you evertime you drive the car until you cave in and get your hands in your pocket again. My wish list is an ever growing beast!
