Overheating

ORIGINAL: zcacogp Al, Sure. 200g unsalted butter 150g white chocolate (can use a mix of white with milk for 'lumps') 300g light muscovado sugar 3 eggs 200g plain flour 1/4tsp salt 1tsp vanilla extract (not flavouring) 125g raspberries 1. Heat oven to 180c/gas4. Butter, then line, a shallow baking tray approx 22x25cm. Melt the butter in a pan and cook gently for 5 mins or so, until the white solids turn golden and the butter smells sweet and biscuity. Cool for 5 mins then add half the white chocolate and set aside for a few minutes for the chocolate to melt. 2. Using an electric whisk, whisk the muscovado sugar and eggs together until thick and pale (approx 2 minutes). Tip in the flour, salt, cooled chocolate/butter mix and vanilla and fold with a metal spoon or spatula until even. 3. Put the mix in the tin, then scatter with the rest of the chocolate (cut into suitable-sized lumps) and the raspberries. Bake for 40-45 minutes until it is risen all over, with a dark golden crust. Cool completely in the tin, then cut into squares. Keeps for about 3 days in a sealed tin (although it never lasts more than 1 here ... ) The version pictured above is baked without raspberries (couldn't get hold of any), but works just fine. You could probably substitute blackberries or blackcurrants or any other soft fruit if you wanted as well. Happy baking! Oli.
Oli, Is this recipe purely to be used when replacing waterpumps or can it be used for any 944 work. Recently had a replacement pump - so could be a long time before i need another one. Unless I buy another 944 of course Mmmmm [;)][;)][;)] Jeff

OK, new pump now fitted and seems to be working just fine. Currently no antifreeze in the cooling system as I didn't have any, but I've taken the car to an Indie who checked the belt tension (bit tight, now loosened off) and bought some antifreeze on the way home, so I'll drain the radiator and put that in before the end of the week. She drives fine. Pulls tidily, no nasty noises from anywhere. It seems as if the getting-very-hot incident has done no damage, which is a relief. Hopefully, this brings this chapter to a close. Moral of the story is to change the waterpump every other belt change, and to buy waterpumps with metal impellers. Thanks for all your input chaps. Oli.

excellent result . Well done Oli. The prospect of working on a car this weather fills me with dread....mind you , you have a nice warm garage with carpet , slippers, and a constant supply of cake and tea How much did the Indie charge you to check the belt tension ?

Oli. You won't believe this... or actually, you might. My car has a coolant leak from somewhere. May just be a loose connection or a split pipe. However, if it's the water pump I will be absolutely gutted. Bear in mind the car was only at the garage 10 days ago for the belts and I returned the water pump to Berlyn (for a credit note) after deciding to run with the garage advice and leave the pump in situ. It's not overheating and seems to be running normally but there's a definite coolant leak and a nice little puddle formed on the engine tray and dripping down. You're not visiting Edinburgh this weekend are you and wanting to have a go at another water pump installation? [:)] Hey-ho, back to the garage later this week. []

Simkin, Ah. Oh. Hmmm. Look on the plus side - there is a lot more to the coolant circuit than the waterpump. And therefore it could be leaking from anywhere. (That could be read as sounding bleak - it's not meant to be!) Keep us posted. I'll keep my hopes up for you ... (Sorry, no plans to go near Edinburgh. But I'm happy to talk you through the changing if you want someone on the end of the 'phone!) Oli.

Your poor old waterpump has gone from having a nice comfortable old worn saggy belt to a new tight belt in a day [;)] New belts often seem to knock the stuffing out of old bearings in no time at all especially if they have been over-tightened.[:(]

Mike - you're right - the weather was better - thanks! [:)] (Ever considered an alternative career with the Met Office? I think you're better at this forecasting thing than they are!) Peanut, I have no garage; all the work is done by the side of the road. No shelter either. And, at one stage when I was under the car doing up the bottom tensioner on the balance belt, I realised I was lying in a stream of water which was running down the gutter. It wasn't pleasant - I was both cold and wet through to the skin, pretty much all over. And I had consumed the remains of the cake yesterday, so there was none left! (Any chance of you posting some of yours over, Craig? [;)]) And the missis was at work, so no tea either ... [] The indie refused to take any money for checking the tension. Flatly refused. I tried to give him £20 (he had given me 10 minutes of opinion and 30 minutes of showing me 'round his workshop and useful conversation) and he eventually agreed to take £10. Seemed very fair to me, but far too cheap. I'll drop some beers 'round later in the week. Oli.

Thom, I have read your PM, but your profile prevents me from replying to you! I didn't measure the impeller on the new pump before fitting, but the eBay advert claims it is 78mm - which is pretty much the same as the one that came off. Oli.

Mine's Blandford Fly. <TakesALongPullFromPintGlass> Oh, sorry, were you offering to buy some beers for my indie? Thanks! I'm sure he'll be most pleased ... [:D] Oli.

Well, leaking hose at the water pump ... and not the water pump itself. However, still a reasonable bill from the garage for fault finding & repair plus a steering shaft replacement on the same bill. Hopefully that's the last of the bills for this year. [:-]

oww no. Fly is a bit funny, not for me. Must be an S2 beer. Badgers for me please.

But Blandford Fly IS a badger beer ... [] (I tried some of that over-advertised Crabbies Ginger Beer the other day. Nice ... ) Simkin - that's not a bad result. She'll drive much better for that new steering shaft. Oli.
