Painting wheels black

Hi folks, I've got 968 cup 1 wheels on my s2, don't like em much (anyone near leeds fancy swapping for d90s?)
wondering if id like them more in black.(annoyingly can't find any google pics of black cup 1 wheels on an s2) Question is, how horribly wrong can it go if I try and do it myself? It's not as if they're mint anyway so at some stage will need a re furb, so I'm thinking I've not got much to lose, or have I? can anyone offer some words of encouragement and some tips, or should I just get my 300 notes out and pay someone who knows what theyre doing?

Yes Tom and I painted our D90's white when first got the car, they weren't special when we got it and they looked quite neat with only a few hours work:

The secret is to spend 80% of your time preping then 20% primer and 2 top coats.

In the end we choose the wrong colour ... after the first race they were black!

So now we've done them red:

That's a shame, although Im not so sure about d 90s in black. My favourites are those that ken has but theyre expensive I think and would rather spend my cash on maintenance than cosmetics, hence the diy consideration. Cheers though.

Get yer 300 notes out mate! Just sent a set of RS4 wheels to "Spit and Polish" for a refurb. Newly diamond cut,shaved off all the kerbings nicely, completely stripped and then powder coated in Anthracite (Dark Grey). Looks the Mutz Nutz and no mistake. They have gone on to my Black T4 and they look Fantastic!! Breaks up the Black nicely and really looks the part. I'm over the moon with them, especially with the new set of tyres! So, moral of this story...get yer dosh out and have them done professionaly [8D]. You wont regret it! []

They look great in white, although my wife would soon wreck them. She borrowed car for first time last week and left the pop ups on all day.luckily battery seems to have recovered after a 4 hour rac wait. Apparently it was the cars fault for not making a bonging noise like our focus.stupid car.

We talking 16 or 17" cups? Personally I would pay for a proper refurb as the finish will make all the difference, if you've never painted wheels before I will suspect they will look pretty poor done DIY. Having said that I have seen some pretty good attempts in the past. I get my wheels done at Lepsons, which are no means the cheapest, but they are most probably the best. When you consider what you get is essentially a new set of wheels for less than £300 its good value. The finish they leave is exemplary. When you come to sell you will get the money back in all propability. D90's look good if the car is otherwise original.

Get them powder coated! We got dad's 18" cayenne wheels refurbed and powder coated for £220 and the job was top notch and look awesome. Though saying that the teledials on my 944 were sprayed by the previous owner and though not perfect (still the light scrape here n there from previous) you can see he put a lot of time and effort into them and they paid off.

D90's and like most wheels I personally think look good with the outer rims left alloy, silver or even chrome
I will post a pic of mine later when home and not on the iPad so you can see.

I am going to paint my Cups the same, just the spokes and leave the outer silver, spray painted many sets of wheels I'm the past very easy if you take your time and get the prep right, but the £300 quoted sounds a good deal for refurb and paint.

I agree, I would just paint the spokes, looks much better, and easier, and cheaper. Ive got 16 inch cup 1s, with the skinny spokes, the worst looking of all the 944 wheels in my opinion. Car is panther black with usual 968 bits and bobs, mirrors, handles, steering wheel and wheels, so it's not standard s2. I work from home and have nothing better to do on my lunch hour so time isnt an issue and if I mess them up not much lost. So, how much time and paint cost do you think we're talking about?

Just a suggestion - look for a set of D90's on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-964-968-944-AUDI-RS2-ORGINAL-D90-16-ALLOY-WHEELS-AND-WINTER-TYRES-/111010137833?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Rims_Car_Wheels_ET&fits=Car+Make%3APorsche|Model%3A968&hash=item19d8b846e9 for example), get them professionally done if required (I've seen Lepson's work, as Edd says it's first class, but Rimtec in Meopham do the same for considerably less!) then list your Cup 1's here and on Porsche968UK - Peasea could well be interested!

I sold a set of 16" Cup 1's on here last year, I now know I set the price too low 'cos I could have sold them 3 times within an hour of posting them for sale!

Great pic - Cup 1's for me, definitely [] Lightest wheel as well. I think they grow on you over time. A set of Cup 1's will go for £300+ even in poor condition. (I sold 2 sets last year). 968 owners are going back to them because the cars drive better on the 16's than the 17's.

I like the 16' cup 1's, of all the 16' wheels they are probably the nicest, with a simple design that dates well. Also one of the lightest wheels so popular for track use. If you want a more meaty look the cup 1 17' wheel also look good on these cars, although will be more expensive and harder to find than similar sized boxster wheels.

I love the colour combo, red and black, this 964 has smart cup 1's in what appears to be satin black. I think a silver line on the rim will work well with you car as solid black on black may be a bit too much.

cheers Chris, thats the plan I had, but those ones are £500, and the going price for decent ones seems to be going up and up, even ones with massive chunks out of them are £250. Mine just have a couple of minor scuffs and a bit of bubbling but I don't think I'd get anywhere near £500, so I'd end up out of pocket which would just annoy me more than anything else and hence seeing if anyone fancies a swopsies.

Andy, are the silver ones on the black s2 16in cup 1's? The one wheel I can see seems in better proportion to the car than mine. My mate I bought the car off thought I should drop the front suspension, so maybe that should be my first port of call and it might make the wheels look bigger (reading that back to myself sounds like a load of bollox-soz). seems to be an optical illusion that the lower the car is the bigger the wheel is.
