PASM

On a car with PASM there is a push-button with a shock-absorber symbol on it. Pressing this illuminates the switch and selects 'sport' mode. My guess is that if the car has 'Sports suspension' this button won't be there, but there are members on this forum with this option who will be more accurate than I!
 
thats great many tks again. the one i test drove last saturday had the button for hardened suspension which as there was no specific mention of it on the description on the opc main webisite then i guess that wud come as standard. reckon ill have the car in 2 weeks as im still waiting for my builders to finish our garage so they are housing the car for me till then.
 
easy to tell - look on the centre console and see if you have a PASM button (looks like a picture of a shock absorber). Either that or check the original spec of the car at any OPC.
 
On the 997 warranty survey (which sadly as a non-member you can't see!) there are very few issues with the suspension, mostly bushes and nothing on the PASM. I don't recall PASM being "inherently noisy".
However, I am more amazed at the mileage from one set of tyres!! Are you certain they are the originals?
 
You might want to try and find the thread that "berty987" wrote a few months ago under the Boxsters forum. He and I had problems with the PASM Dampers knocking on the rear of our Boxsters. Mine started knocking at very early mileage about 16k and never really got any worse up to 47k when I sold it. I lived with it because it actual got less noisy after it drove the car a few miles. I believe these dampers are the same front and rear and the same on the 911's. My OPC never found the problem, but I believe Mike (berty987) actually got one of his changed under warranty. You never know it might be something like this"¦"¦"¦. just a thought ........[8|]

It's one of my front dampers that are knocking and the rears are fine, I just hope it stays that way and doesn't get any worse. I checked the dates on the tyres and they were all 05's, front tyres are worn and rubber is a bit cracked now so need changing, don't know what kind of mileage is normal but I suppose 5 years does sound quite impressive...

Tyres might be dated 05 but could have been fitted at any time (old stock)

I have had 4 modern Porsches fitted with PASM. I have not had much problem with knocking, though over speed bumps when cold I found all my cars knocked. My main gripe about PASM in the Cab is the almost lack of change when selecting Sport mode. You get either firm with Normal selected or just a little firmer with Sport. On several occasion I wondered if the system was actually working!
 
With all due respect, the OPC technician doesn't know what he's talking about.
Knocking sounds from the suspension area are quite common and are almost always due to the usual suspects (not withstanding Berty987's damper issues which is quite rare)

Go to an independent Porsche specialist in your area, and they will quite likely tell you that the culprit is either the:-

1.Anti-roll bar drop links
2.Anti-roll bar bushes delaminating
3.Forked control arm (coffin arm) bushes delaminating.

1 & 2 are very cheap fixes, 3 not as cheap but not unreasonably so.

You do not have to live with this problem.
 
Hi Tony, I have a rather nice low mileage Gen2 C4s for sale, if you are interested.
I was lucky to have a Gen 1 C4s prior to changing to the Gen 2 variant, so I can really appreciate the difference between the 2 versions.
Both cars are fantastic to own & will give any owner a fantastic driving experience. I find the Gen 2 car to be a lot more refined to drive which is nice, but i also enjoyed the slightly rawer edge to the Gen 1 car. You will be aware of the chat around IMS & bore scoring, and percentage wise the risk is tiny on the Gen 1 cars, but i do enjoy the zero risk of my Gen2. My Gen 1 was a manual which could be said is the purists choice, but when these cars are capable of such terrific acceleration & if you are driving on a particularly challenging tight twisty road the PDK of my Gen 2, makes it feel like you are driving a video game & progress would not be so quick with a manual. There are pro's & cons to both no right or wrong just down to personal preference.

Thanks Steve - but I'm afraid that doesn't help!
I think I've seen your car advertised and love the look of it but really want rear wheel drive.
I'm really hunting info about wether the PASM settings differ between the two generations, certainly the 'feel' is different but the difference between manual and pdk significantly contributes to this.

PASM was enhanced in Gen 2 cars with improved damping and sports mode made more compliant for use on British roads. The car generates a better ride and is more controllable at high speed.

Thanks Clive, That's exactly what I wanted to know (confirms Steve's feelings too).
I now know I'm looking for a gen2 coupe - just need to find someone who wants to swap one for a Cayman R [:)]

I happened to come across this info which I hope helps. 997 gen1 pasm doesn't have 3-axis accelerometer which means it takes less data from the car to adjust the suspension. One of the options to make 997 gen 1 pasm better or even better than the 997 gen2 is to have dsc sport pasm box. It makes the suspension alive and do what it should be doing.
 
Steve makes some great points which i agree with entirely ... Ive had a 997 GTS PDK a GT4 and just bought a 2007 X51 C2S from 911 Virgin ... Ive only done 20 minutes in the X51 car but as Steve says the difference is different! The Gen1 cars feel more "real" and "sound better" than Gen2 cars ... Interior on Gen2 is way better but i don't mind the Gen1 as it feels more Classic ... My X51 S feels virtually as quick as the GT4 yet incredibly has more character from a noise perspective, obviously GT4 is "sharper" and front end grip is way better, but i like the old school feel of the 911 as opposed to the modern GT4 point and shoot .... Each to their own, but try both as you may be surprised what an X51 2S can do ... after all its quicker than a GT3 to 80 Mph
