PCGB Speed Championship Car for Sale

Mel is one of the latest recruits to the PCGB Speed Championship and, like the rest of the participants, is enjoying the great mixture of competition and cameraderie in this discipline. It's my third year of Speed competition, but the adrenelin rush is still as good as it was when I started.

I know Mel has been talking to some of the 64RS community about joining us next year and if you're already considering it, I'm sure you'll find it as enjoyable as the rest of us do. Although I've had an RS for 5 years or so, I was worried about using it to compete. So instead I bought an SC and have spent the last three years making it steadily more competitive. All this work has come to fruition this year as the SC and I have won its class, ahead of the two previous Speed Champions.

Although I plan to race in the Speed Championship again next year, I'd like to try a different class and am looking to sell the SC. So if you're tempted by the idea, but worried about using your RS, this could be a great way of getting into competition in a class winning, proven car. If you're interested, you can see more information at SC Race Car or email me at tim@pulsarconsulting.com.

Mel, any other comments welcome [;)]

I seem to recall prerequisites are the following

1. National B non-race MSA license. Bascially 30 odd quid to the MSA (no test)
2.I dont think you need to do much to the car. I think it needs stickers for pointing ignition off, and yellow tape on the baterry earth terminal (only one lead to battery terminal) And I think thats about it. No cage required, no harness required. You can turn up in a street 911 and do this with very little prep.
2. Race suit (no nomex undies required) I think they need to be FIA spec (so about 200quid upwards). You should wear gloves and boots too, but I dont think its mandatory. Helmet to MSA spec I believe?

Sum's it up pretty well............... but FIA spec race suit only required as from 2012. Proban is still legal - but would not be my choice!

MSA spec helmet now means nomex lined (ie red BSnnnn AF/R sticker - blue is no longer OK). Other helmet stds can be found in the blue book.

Just need a timing strut on the front of the car - easy to make from a bit of thin alloy plate and bolt to the number plate fixing.

Check tyre rules for 'road' car classes. There has been lots of debate over the use of normal road tyres vs trackday type tyres. Probably not an issue in the PCGB specific classes?

Nomex lined gloves are also required this year, but otherwise that is about it. Standard road cars compete in this discipline, so as long as you have an MOT you can use just about anything.

Obviously if you want to be quick, you'll be looking at doing all sorts...... or buying a car that's already sorted.....

If you're competing in a road going class, which all the Porsche entries are assumed to be, many of Porsche's use Kumho or Toyo R888, depending on what tyre sizes are available.

Chris

Probably best to trailer to the ones further away, but it can be fun to arrive and drive for the more local ones. Part of the fun for many is the social stuff the night before the event, which is easier if you're staying on site. I used a tent in my first year, well at least for most of it, Mel already has his motorhome, as do others. I have now "progressed" to a Ford Transit which doubles as my towing vehicle and sleeping quarters [&:]

Be keen to see the calendar for next year. Chris you dont get much track time for your money, about 3 laps/climbs per event, each of which is around 60-90 secs. But as said above its more about the social side of things. Very different to a trackday or race weekend I'd say.

Really silly question maybe ..... but does anybody drive their car to and from an event maybe with a support vehicle with tyres etc ... ? The true philosphy of the 911 ....[:D]

Des some drive to the events, one even turned up with his spare set of wheels on a roof rack of a 911.
One of the best parts is in some ones motorhome,or around the Barby talking nonsense, drinking and having a fuzzy head for your best time up the hill.Great fun.

A good skill to learn and will help any one thinking of going racing,it teaches you how to bang in a good qualy time on cold tyres, while every one else is messing around getting the car right first, and then the red flag come out!

That was certainly my plan Des.....and its what I did when I sprinted too. But then I used to drive the car to circuit races aswell - with wife and luggage for a w/e stay. Doesnt happen much these days.

I'm guessing it's not always possible to learn a sprint or hillclimb circuit prior to the run, so how does this work ?

There are hillclimb schools for the climbs, the rest are on circuits so you can do trackdays. But to be honest, I wouldnt worry about, its more fun just to turn up and have a go.
