PCM sat nav updates on CD, not hard disc....?

About 303 pounds plus vat the latest map is 8/2009 the part number is 997 044 902 50.

You may need to update the PCM firmaware to be able to run the new maps, the above part number also comes with the update discs to do the but does not come with any instructions.

The dealer should be able to do this for you or if you PM me I can send you the tech bulletin for the previous map update, the instructions are the same as the 2007/2008 map updates.

Thanks Nick for your timely information about a PCM upgrade. When I bought my 987 in March 2005 the PCM had no TMC or postcode option, despite it being included in the published spec. But five years on, with many new options and updated maps, I am willing to buy an upgrade. I've just ordered it from my OPC for £320 with free installation - £303 + VAT less 10% club discount. I'm told it requires 'electronic validation using the tester', so it may not be a DIY option. It's due for installation tomorrow afternoon, so I'll keep you posted.

Awesome.....

The newer map features will not be detailed in your 2005 PCM manual.

If you can get hold of a 2006+ PCM manual or PCM quick reference guide they are in there.

ive just been told my december 2005 987 S PCM CANNOT be updated, you need PCM 2.1 o this is via OPC newcastle??AFTER CHECKING A DATABASE (I GUESS) VIA VIN NUMBER APPARENTLY MY 2.0PCM CANNOT BE UPDATED? CONFUSED NOW!

I have a September 2004 987S running PCM 2.1 with a 2009 map DVD. Any PCM 2.1 can be updated to run the 2009 Map DVD , you just need to know what to do and how to do it. Send me an e mail and I can explain more.

I have replied to your earlier PM; If you send me your email address I will send you the Porsche Tech Bulletin with the instructions to upgrade your PCM.

Your dealer is wrong.

The new PCM nav (08/2009) was successfully installed on my 987 (March 2005) at the OPC this afternoon, including both updated software and revised maps. It comprised three CDs, took a technician about twenty minutes to install, and works just fine. The display is noticeably different from the original (10/2004), but the improved functionality is not immediately obvious.

The OPC Parts Manager informed me that all 987s incorporate PCM version 2.1, and therefore all are upgradeable. The installation instructions state explicitly that only an OPC is authorised to upgrade the PCM, and therefore no user instructions are included with the update pack.

My only problem now is to figure out how to use the new facilities. It would be useful to know how to ensure that TMC (obstructions/detours etc) is working, and how to enter a destination postcode. Any guidance from owners of newer models would be much appreciated. Is the latest PCM manual available online?

So go for it, ianmac.

A result!!!

I have only seen the 2005 version of the PCM manual online and I only have a USA hard copy which does not detail the TMC features.

However, from what I can remember (I am in Kenya at the moment), if you select MAP then SET there is an option there to display the Traffic Information, and the other is selected from NAVI, routing options, you will now have a new option Dynamic Routing which takes into consideration current traffic conditions.

Well done brian, Brian ive just been quoted £303+vat +£90.00 fitting! Where did you get your done, p.s. do you know if you get post code search as yet?

Brian
I still don't think its full postcode search?, only the first 5 digits.. I'd be interested to know if its now a full search.

TMC will be apparent with the lovely blue triangles and routes all over the M6 and M42 !!
Selecting the route options will give you the choice to select the routes via the TMC information - which has saved me a fair few hours on the road!!

I use OPC Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham - http://www.porschehost.com/home.asp?opc=suttoncoldfield. Call them and ask for Ben in Parts; he is a very knowledgeable and helpful guy.

I am assured that post codes can be used as destinations, but I'm not sure if it's just the first four characters or the whole code. I have yet to discover how to use them!

I have not yet tried the postcode search on the latest version. However, I can confirm the the 2008 version of the map does not have full 7 digit search.

A post code destination in the Town field only allows the input of four or five characters - the first group plus the first character of the second group eg CV8 6DX or DE72 2BL. I guess you could then add the street name and number in the usual way.

TMS seems to be working - although all my triangles are red.

I have found a PCM 2.1 user manual in pdf format on ebay here - a fiver including postage (for a pdf?).

The functionality of the TMC is only for major roads such as A roads and motorways. Unlike the TMC functions found on the phillips systems it only includes traffic rather than weather warnings. The triangles indicate a potential traffic hazard and you select dynamic from the navigation menu to automatically detour round them. On the TMC menu there is an option to read more details about the hazerd.

Regarding post code search I think this is a hang up of the system being german hence the maximum number of digits is shorter than we use over here. Once the post code has been entered you are presented with the streets and addresses that fall under the area digits input. To be honest I rarely use the post code function, the predictive text is a more useful feature of the update. This is where the letters that are not plausable for the next imput are greyed out on the address input. Eg Z following S is not a valid town for the UK so Z is greyed out after an S has been input.

last time i spoke to porsche about the satnav updates was april 2009. i didn't bother with the upgrade at the time as i was told the main diff to the 2006 (?) version on my '05 car was a few more golf courses. i already have the traffic updates. is there now a newer version? the latest part number i got at the time was 997 044 901 50 so guess so assuming this will work on my 2.1 system.

Can anyone explain the differences between the 2006 update and this one? wondering now its been a while whether to bother or not.

thanks!

The updates are more to do with greater coverage in europe , particularly eastern europe and also updates to road layouts etc on the existing database. The last update in 2007 was in fact a 2006 map data file , so the 2009 map is going to be at least two years more up to date. The size of the file on the disc is larger suggesting theres more info, I dont think more golf courses are the reason for the update, these dont tend to increase at a particularly significant rate. I'm not aware of any new functionality from the new map DVD , I certainly didnt notice any difference between the 2007 and 2009 map in my own car.
