Petrol Light Chicken

Hi Guys

Quite inadvertantly I ended up doing 40 miles last night after my fuel light came on. First 10 miles in spirited fashion and then into fuel saver mode when I realised I had no idea when the next gas station was!

What is expected mileage once the light comes on and has anyone beat 40?

Stuart

I normally fill up when the light comes on and put in 65 litres. I believe the tank holds 80 (someone will confirm this) so that's a 15 litre reserve. At 25 mpg that's about 75 miles till it runs dry. This is on my 1990 S2, not sure if earlier cars are different.

The reserve is 8 litres so approx 1 gallon so at snail pace that is about 30 miles if you are lucky. You will never get 80 litres in the tank at first click. That is a safety feature of most cars. It actually takes some amount of time with diligent dribbling of petrol into the tank to brim it. You can actually get more if you fill the pipe as well.

Dead right mate I am thinking in pints lol [8D] So by that reckoning in the correct units I reckon about 50 miles at a push?

So 40 miles was a good effort then!

Don't think i'll try to beat my record then any time soon! Is good to know that I can go 40 miles though after the light comes on.

Yes, 50 miles should be on if you are in proper fuel-saving mode, the state of mind well described as "sucking up the seat cushions". Got into that exact situation on my second long weekend drive in my 944T, meandering around the North Yorkshire Moors and not knowing where any of the petrol stations were that sell 97 octane or better -- this is what comes of having a daily driver that a) runs on diesel rather than petrol and b) does more than 700 miles on a tank. I ended up having to put in a couple gallons of 95 octane to limp to the Shell station and VMAX up.

Ha ha I don't know how many miles I did but I got so stuck looking for a petrol station once that I ended up crawling along at 40mph in the slow lane of a dual carrigeway with the hazzards on at night waiting for it to die! Amazingly it actually made it without running out but the sweat! I'll never push it like that again. I had been playing the game for some time before I realised I was in unfamiliar territory and no petrol station was appearing.

Ha ha mine did die on the busiest dual carriageway in Peterborough at rush hour!!!! I scurried down the embankment to a) Hide my shame and b) Save myself from being mowed down by one of the extremely irate truckers that were now busy swerving round my stricken 944. And it was chucking down too. A night not to fotget. I had to call the cavalry as I wasn't taken to carrying a gallon of petrol then (believe me I do now), which quickly arrived in the form of my mate in his 964 and a gallon of go go juice. How embarrassing []

I know I've done 30 miles with the light on several times but I've never dared push it until the 40's As Rob said, the light 'should' come on when there is 8 litres left so in theory 60 miles in fuel saver mode is possible. I normally fill up at the next station I see when the light comes on

Yes, must be about 60 miles after the light comes on as I have done just over 50 miles with the red light on on a long journey (service station was closed- so i had to try and make it to the next one).

Certainly on a motorway where the 944 does 32-35mpg if you drive carefully (I slowed to 60mph for those 50 miles!).

Using mine going to work and back I know that if the fuel light comes on at work there is enough to get home and do another round trip....... a total of 60 miles (20 + 40)....... driving sensibly.

That is when I chicken out and put some juice in.

stupid question - is the low fuel light suppose to come on with iggnition then go off when you start up, or just when the fuel is low?

ta. :)

My fuel light presently comes on randomly anywhere from 1/4 tank down, and fills me with fear as the needle seems to plummet from that point on - know I can do a 30 mile round trip with it on due to getting up to late to fill her up on the way to work and needing to get home early......... do spend quite a lot of time living in fear of running out of fuel though !

Mine has always worked but through laziness I have been running to work and back and not stopping at the garage, today on the way home the needle was just below the empty mark with no light on so I chickened out and put 360 worth in on the way to the supermarket [;)]

Go on then what's the most number of miles anyone has ever had out of a tank? I'll join the competition when I get my car back as I can't remember the best I've managed.

I managed 481 miles on 60 litres a while ago in my S2. Works out as 36.3 mpg. That's pretty gentle motorway for most of it but I think it could be beaten.

481 Blimey! Right I had a theory (when trying to persuade a friend to buy a turbo rather than an S2) that the turbo would be more efficient than an S2 if driven slowly because off boost its a smaller capacity engine. I wonder if I can beat that on my trip to Wales in a few weeks.
