Picking up a 944 tomorrow!!

Hi Fellas!

Well, this is my first post on these pages, and I hope it wont be the last. I've always loved German cars, and currently own an Audi Coupe. Before that I've owned two golfs and a jetta! A friend and I drove to ashford over the weekend to look at a 944 that was for sale. I had never thought about buying a Porsche before until said friend mentioned them when we were out one evening as he knew I was in the market for a different car. We were both gobsmacked at the absolutely mint condition the lux was in. Full history and not one dent or rust spot anywhere. Beautiful alloys and it even had the sunroof bag and every MOT slip from new! Let me know what you think of her, I'm off to pick her up tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck!

Looks nice.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I'm intrigued by the alloys - it's an '86 car, right? Those alloys are from a MY '90 or later car and they shouldn't fit. Does it have wheel spacers?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Very nice, you don't see too many silver 944s.

I've seen a few Luxs with Design90 wheels (not sure if they all need spacers, could be 964 wheels?). When you get it, check out what numbers are stamped either side of the air valve on the rim.

Welcome to the forum [:)]

Paul, D90's will fit '87- Lux's but pre-'87 had a different offset. 964 D90's are the same offset as 944 ones, just narrower.

Lovely looking car: I've always fancied an oval dash model. What kind of mileage is on it (not much I bet) and where was it advertised out of curiosity? I assume the cam belts have been done recently? I wouldn't mind seeing some more pics of the inside. Let us know how you get on with it.

I'm a bit annoyed today, as I cant get the cash needed from the bank until Thursday! I was meant to be going down there tonight to pick it up. I was hoping to raise a bankers draught but the guy selling wanted cash, which is understandable. So, I'm now waiting for Thursday to pick the car up. I'll try get some decent pics posted when I've got it. Thanks for the comments guys, it is a lovely clean car. I fell in love.

Congrats on getting your first 944 looks lovely car same colour as mine only got mine this year hope you have as much fun as i do with mine .

I sympathise with both and I have to say I will never sell a car for anything but cash again. The last twice I've had a cheque from the dealer and a bankers draft and both have been a pain as they have to clear. Fine if you have the money to buy something else or if the car is a toy but not so clever if you want to use the funds to buy a replacement car right away. Or ,aybe it's just my bank who are obstructive about releasing funds pending theothers clearing. They do like to say they do things another way and I tend to agree - even worse than the competition in most cases.

So, how much do you think I should pay for this car?? [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Like I mentioned in the first post, the car is spotless (apart from a mark on the boot, only 1 inch long, hardly noticable) and the guy selling was very friendly and had really cared for the car. Its kept wrapped up in a tailored cover too. Fen, I know you always shed a lot of light of the value of these cars. • Interior in very good condition

The car has had 1 owner for over 4 years and during that time the car has been very well looked after and maintained, as you can see from the photo's.
The bodywork is in excellent overall condition apart from a very slight mark on the boot, under the spoiler (see photo); this mark is minor but I want to be as honest as possible.

The car is 100% reliable, drives extremely well and is used on a regular basis with no problems at all, a real pleasure to drive with superb handling.
The car has been serviced and maintained on a regular basis and comes with partial service history and receipts for work carried out. Also all the MOT certificates apart from one (1996). [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Reason for sale, purchase of a 944 S2, even so it is quite a wrench to part with it. Please feel free to ask any questions that you feel are not covered in the above.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Around £3k would be my guess. I wouldn't say you were getting burned exactly at a little over but much more would be stretching it. It's a nice car in a good colour but it is basic Lux spec and the history is "partial". If that's recent then great, if it's early in the car's life not so good. Miles are reasonable if not low and I guess backed up by the MoT certificates? Low miles aren't all they're cracked up to be anyway.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]As I said before it should have wheel spacers. If it doesn't then it has later hubs and I'd wonder why; nobody replaces them just to fit D90's. Any sign of blistering (normally directly under the back edge of the door or at the bottom of the front wing behind the wheel) is common but the valuation assumes it is not present on this car. When did it last have a major (belt) service? Is the clutch good? Those are the things that reduce the value. The figure at the top assumes no nasty surprises - it looks good in the pics. It is also a selling price as opposed to an advertising (and not selling) price.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

When you get time, post a closeup picture of the blemish under the spoiler. Silver is a very good colour to blend in a small repair so it would not cost you very much to have it looking spick and span.

spick and span = very technical term [:D]

Cheers for the pointers Fen. I'll take this on board when I go see him tommorow, and ask about those wheel spacers. Out of interest do the spacers affect the way the car should drive? Are there any problems with them?? How much would they offset the wheel width?? About 3-5mm would be my guess??
Now wheres the pick of that blemish ...
