Picking up my 911 Turbo in 2 weeks

Hey Folks,

I had a boxster s until 2 months ago when it got written off! A guy in a Monero went into the back of me (3rd party accepted full liability). I have now just put down a deposit on a 2003 911 Turbo which I will be picking up in 2 weeks, so so cant wait!!

Does anyone have any recomendations for car insurance? Tesco seems to be the cheapest so far with £2k.

Have a look at the Porsche High Speed Driving Course, usually undertaken at one of the official test tracks, such as Millbrook. Costly, but can have tuition specifically for the turbo.

Mominator, the 996TT is very sure footed & predictable, the only time you need to worry is on damp greasy roads when it can be a bit unpredictable, funnily enough streaming wet roads seem ok, it's the damp ones that can get it snapping sideways unexpectedly! The trouble is the car is so amazingly capable & surefooted you some times forget it has limits!
The bottom line is in the dry it will take all 420 horses in virtually all circumstances without being unpredictable, but the beauty is that although your granny could drive it fast, it is still a great drivers car. Just remember full beans in 2nd is advisable where ever sensible/possible. Only downside is your license is in danger whilst you own this car, simply because it will reach unprintable speeds before you even realise it.
Enjoy the car I had nearly 4 years in one & still loved it through to the change.

Try http://www.cadence.co.uk/ I can not recommend them highly enough. I took a day's "Roadcraft" training when I had a Caterham a few years ago, and it was absolutely brilliant.

There are others in the back of Porsche Post or any good car mag (Evo for example).
 
Hi, try AON. I have a scheme with them though my work which is very reasonable and they also offer a specilaist Porsche scheme. Worth a call. Also service is first class. After a white van man nudged my stationary Carrera (soon to be 996 Turbo) on the M25 requiring a new bumber and repair to the engine cover they were very helpful and accepted just a single quote from my local OPC repairer. No fuss, just quality cover. Phone is 01252 767189. If you go with one of the mass market insurers make sure that they will let you choose the repairer should you have an accident, many will try to use their general (and ussally low cost) repairer.
 
watch out for the tesco insurance. I would check their terms and conditions. Had a friend who was with tesco and found out that the insurance was not up to much when they had a claim. Would stick to specialist in Porsche insurance

After specifically asking Tescos if they covered high value vehicles, I received a very competitive quote on a new turbo a couple of years ago. However, once the paperwork arrived, I realised the car was only covered up to £35,000 - less than half its true value. So proceed with caution!
 
Alot of these insurance companies were quoting me huge premiums because I am 27. I have 6 years no claims and it seems like this has had no effect what so ever.. Whoever said insurnce premiums go down when you hit 25 lied..

i've got a 03 tt insured in my name (26 years old) 8 years ncb, with 2 other named drivers with bell-direct for £720, can't be bad.
 
Picking up the car on Saturday morning, only few days to go. Is there anything I should look out for when I pick it up from the dealer? Its from an OPC and the motor is only 3 years old with 7k on the clock.
 
  1. Watch out for plod.
  2. Sports Exhaust so it wont sound like a bag of broken boxster bits.
  3. Second Gear @ 2000 revs press the loud pedal and never forget that feeling.

You have to see this, it is an absolute beaut! I flew out to Aberdeen to pick it up and drove it back to London. What a drive.. It was just amazing. I definately need to get some lessons though..

Any tips on using the turbo? What does the bar on the menu mean? Apologies if I am asking stupid questions..

bar on the menu is the boost pressure that the turbos are giving you. At full power you should see 0.7/0.8 depending on the conditions eg warm/cold day etc. Tips on turbo - only real one i can think of is after a hard drive allow the turbos to cool down eg either have the car sitting at tickover for 1 minute or drive it off boost for a couple of miles before home (this stops the oil sitting in the hot turbos with no circulation where the oil would loose some of its good properties). Hope thats what your questions meant, cheers.
 
Tip for turbos?
Keep your eye on the speedo, they do ridiculous speeds in no time.
Keep your eye on the rev counter, they reach red line in ridiculous time.
