Picking up new Boxster

I'm new on here, picking up a Sport Edition Boxster tomorrow.
Decided not to get S version at 6k more, 245 bhp should be adequate and depreciates less, only doing 5k per year.
Any comments about worth of this version v's base model.

What points should I check on the car and any suggestions what to ask about during the handover?
Are rubber mats worth buying at £55 with low miles?
Chris

Chris

Welcome to Boxster ownership - you won't regret it. Re the mats, I'd get the leather trimmed carpet ones - £80 odd, but in for a penny in for a pound as they say!

hi!welcome and enjoy that fantastic new porsche experience [;)]

as for the rubber mats-i wouldnt bother with rubber mats unless youre a farmer[:D]
i have the leather trimmed carpets and they have been great

as for worth.dont think about it just enjoy-they will all be worth nothing in a very short time!!!!!

The car has the factory mats, are these leather edged?
It's in Arctic Silver with Metropole Blue hood and p/ leather along with RPS, AAC, Htd Sts, Bose.
It was a stock car as I gather they were all built late lst year.

My factory mats are fabric edged. I don't think I've seen leather bound ones (apart from in Ferraris!)

Enjoy the car - you'll love it more the more you use it [8D]

Enjoy the car Chris - make sure you get all then handbooks/user manuals (they often disappear to other cars if books have been out of stock at the factory, so dealers swap them from one car to another).

Check the car over carefully before you drive away, and take a tyre pressure gauge because there are far too many cars delivered on incorrect tyre pressures.

One thing to note - if the car is wearing Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres , these are no longer available, so if you get a puncture Porsche would recommend you change ALL the tyres, raher than mix n match.

Thanks guys, I am coming out of an S5 so hard act to beat on grunt, but its a pure sports car not a GT.
Will check those tyre pressures, what should I do if it does have Sport Contact 2s, I don't see them replacing them for Michelins?

Get them to swap the wheels for another new car - there will be other cars with the same wheels on with Michelin or Bridgestones.

i was told you can't get fitted rubber mats...i'd love them, car is in wilts which is 90% of the time covered in mud/poo from the fields.

Any idea when they stopped fitting Contis SC IIs before I call them and raise this one?

Conti stopped production round about December i think - there are still cars unregistered in showrooms with Contis fitted, which is a good indication of how long some of the cars have been sitting unsold.

Porsche in fairness have been quite good with some owners, offering to replace all 4 tyres for the cost of the damaged one. However this is only a handful of cases, and relies somewhat on you calling Porsche Assist breakdown, waiting to be recovered, issued with a hire car for 5-14 days, etc etc etc. Porsche will not repair tyres.

Regarding the tyres - the way the current market is, i would have thought that it would be in the dealers interests to keep their customers happy! If they are conti's, you've got nothing to loose by asking them to be swapped.

I'm a committed '911ophile', but I've always felt that, £ for £, the Boxster is the best car Porsche make.

Chris

Any model fantastic. Bought my first Porsche in Dec 2006. Most fantastic day picking it up, sad as i am i took some pictures, glad i did. Unlike any other car i have owned (about 17!) the novelty has never worn off..........enjoy

Pete

i would agree with trying to get a change to michelin sports-i have just had 4 new ones fitted and the difference from the contis is amazing(imo)so i would definately see if you can change for free if poss

I just got a msg for the dealer to say the Conti problem was with 19 in tyres and not 18in and that supply was a temporary issue that is now OK again. My own tyre supplier says they are going to SC 3s but then Michelins are also updating their tread pattern as well.
Am I justified in saying that the tyres supplied are out of date even if they are not obsolete and I want currently made tyres?

Chris

Sorry ChrisH - i'd forgottent he 2.7 sport edition is on 18s

Conti issues were around 19s, but looking at mytyres it looks like Conti have a Porsche N rated SC3 in the pipeline. Michelins appear to be N2 at the moment as you say. Bridgestone RE050s are still on the original version.

When it comes to tyre replacement Porsche will tell you not to mix tread patterns or N rating on the car, even if one axle is one N rating and the other a different N rating.

Your dilema isn't quite what i thought it was - you really aren't in any worse a position than anyone else to be honest, there are constant tyre changes over the lifetime of the Boxster so at some poitn most owners will have to decide whether to mix n match for a period or not.

I doubt you have any standing with the delaer to be honest, but if there is an option offered to you, your safest bet might be to ask for the Brigestones !

The point I will make is they are supplying me with a new car with out of date tyres as the SC3's are the current replacements, see Contis website, so I would have to replace all 4 if I have a puncture.

Update about the Conti S C 2's after collecting the Boxster today. OPC gave me a written undertaking that in the event of a puncture, if they (Porsche Customer Service) cannot locate a replacement SC 2 they will pay for 3 SC 3's. This seens fair enough.
Thanks for all the advice, chaps.

Having driven home am well pleased, solid feel and well built, no quirks (unlike my S5 I just traded-in) and just about saw 30 mpg.
There were no running in instructions offered so will rev it to around 3k for first 100 mls and then build it up to 4k up to 1000 mls.
I gather the engines like a few revs once warmed up.
