play in rack

I seem to have some play in one of the steering components.

When stationary I can turn the wheel a few degrees each way and hear a slight knock..knock...knock, as if there is play between two components.
When I bought the car 8 months ago I replaced the steering UJ with a brand new one. So i doubt its that.
Ive jacked up the front of the car and tried to wobble the wheels in 9-3 and 12-6. This showed no obvious signs of play.
I'm going to replace tie rod ends anyway as there about £8 each.

What else could it be? Ball joints? steering rack? does the steering column have any other universal joints in it?

Might be worth checking the work that you did on the UJ mate. When I assembled the steering rack on mine after the engine rebuild that is exactly what I was getting from the UJs. I had to do a canny bit of fettling to sort it out. Did you replace the whole shaft including both UJs. I don't even know if it comes as seperate items?

yep, I replaced the both UJ's with a new genuine part like this. It came as one part. I suppose one of the bolts that join it to the rack or the column may be loose or the rack itself could be, I'll double check.

Yeah could be that one of the pinch bolts has worked loose or even out. Did you use nyloc nuts on them? In my case the steering was fine until I put the pinch bolt back in then the top UJ was knocking. It is a little worn and could do with replacing but not this year lol. When fitted the M8 pinch bolt was actually pushing the lot out of alignment ever so slightly. The fix until I can get a new shaft was to just fit a M6 bolt instead. Has worked a treat but I will probably replace the shaft next year.

The pinch bolts can become loose, even correctly torqued!

Added about 5 ftlb to the proper figure when I re did them on the 2.5 - was ok for a couple of years at least, 'till I sold it.

thanks, ill check tomorrow. Cant remember if they were nyloc nuts or not, if they aren't I'll swap them.

Before ordering outer tie rods, check the inner tie rods as they come with the ends, would be a shame buy bits twice.

On each side, pull the boot back then move the road wheel back and forth. You should see any play.
I had play on one side and the car showed the same symptoms as yours.

ORIGINAL: Hilux

I`d be checking the lower steering column bearing too

Yes good advise!
Mine does knock like that when rocking the wheel slightly. Took a quick look the otherday and the lower column bearing has collapsed and fallen out of the column

Turned out it was the wheel bearings!!

I've tightened them up and its improved things no end. Now there's no knocking or play at all :)
