poor idle / stalling

ORIGINAL: C2dweller

Car hadn't had technical bulletin 9005 implemented, so I've implemented the modification this evening. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. This is the tie-wrap of the cable to the air flow meter (Have other people checked this is done to theirs?)

It wasn't done on mine so I did it myself. Pay attention to the other point in the TSB that tells you to ensure the breather pipes behind the AFM are secured to the firewall (it's the air flow in those that interferes with the AFM signal). The mod helped reduce my problem of the fuel being cut when under low load going down hill. It didn't have any effect on normal idling.

I have had some issues with poor and erratic iddle and the car stalling for the last 6 months. After checking the usal suspects finally discovered the problem was on the electrical system on the distributor.

Fernando

I think my problem was related to a couple of things: overfilled oil & not having the technical bulletin carried out (9005).

The first part led to an interesting characteristic as there are some nice bends about 150m away from my home and I would race round them on a return from a test run - just before pulling on the drive. The car would run fine on the test route, only to stall as I pulled on the drive [8|]

Thanks to RSGULP for coming round and giving me a point in the right direction by first checking the oil [:)]

I've taken out about 0.75 ltrs and I think its OK, but I'm really struggling to check the oil level - the oil is beautifully clean and is barely visible on the dipstick.

I now need to address a slight lumpiness at around 1500 rpm - I think the overfilling could have affected the oxygen sensor and it might be running rich. Does this sound feasible? I'm going to check the sensor over the coming weekend.

More thread tidying ... [:)]

Changed lots of things in the end. Most significant was changing spark plugs and setting valve clearances. This should have been done 1500miles ago by Porsche, but less said about that the better.

Pinching up the clips (well the accessible ones) on the intake also helped.

Thanks, Lee

Finding out more about these things ... another puzzle resolved recently. When it did stall on the way back onto the drive it was the extra electrical load on the engine to lower the spoiler! well I never [:)]

I took off the inlet manifold this evening to inspect the oil pressure sender and found a healthy amount of oil in the lower pipe - I assume this confirms the overfill and subsequent ISV clean to remedy.

As I say 95% OK now - certainly doesn't stall anymore.

More thread tidying !

New leads didn't make much difference (includes new coils too)

Tightened up a loose breather pipe from rear of inlet, near ISV, and all is well. Also cleaned the white plastic part of the air flow meter (- I assume this has a high temperature resistor inside and senses air flow by the amount of cooling ????)

Anyway fix was cheap in the end - just cost a fortune getting there ... enjoyed it though[:)]
