Porsche 968 Turbo RS

One of 4 cars built [8D]. I belive one is in the UK.

For 159,000 I think they might put a new tyre on it for you.

It has bits of pink on it, and thats the colour of most red 944's go.

There's a nice website about the 4 RS's here:

http://968turbo.homestead.com/

I don't think it's been updated for a while as the details haven't changed for a few years. IIRC from Rennlist the #4 car was sold by Jason from Paragon Products because he wasn't using it enough

What do you mean, "we dont get out much".???

Oh + i believe the "one" in the UK is not here anymore...I think it went abroad.....

I was reading an old copy of 911&PW last week and in it they drove the car at its launch (the yellow non-RS road car that was used in most of the press shots). The photo's of the engine bay show a very un Porsche like tangle of additional wires suggesting it either wasn't quite finished or was still being used for testing. Sadly I think it sums up their attitude to this car, I can only guess they felt that it would have distracted people from the 911 (just how many times have we suspected Porsche of doing this?). If only they'd given it a bit more power, a bit less weight and a more sensible price tag then things might have been very different.

Wasn't it designed for a specific race series where power to weight regulations dictated low 300bhp figures, and it was so laughably easy to get that from a 944 Turbo with a 3 litre bottom end that that was basicall all they buillt? That's why it's 8 valve anyway I believe.

Looking past the 968, there is no shortage of VERY tasty metal in that garage. (Why is it that German garages always look ridiculously delicious - clean, uncluttered, high ceilings, tiled floors, well-kept walls ... !) 964 cab, BMW2002, what looks like a 993RS (oh mummy I want one of those!) and what's the red thing to the rear right of the 968? 'Rarri 348, perhaps?

Oli.

ETA: Just realised that if you click on the "Galerie" link, you can see better pictures of the other bits of automotive heaven there ... it's a 328GTB I was looking at, and they have TWO Lancia Stratos' as well, and a Weissman GT, and an M1, and a lovely old Merc SL.

It's almost enough to make me break the habit of a lifetime and buy a lottery ticket!

I guess the BMW X5 not bad!
You guess wrong then, my friend! [:D][:D][:D][:D]

(Better than the fcuked-up ugly illegitimate spawn of a Land Rover Defender and a Sports Coupe that is the X6, but only fractionally so.)

I finally got around to scanning the article I mentioned above (it's from a long out of print issue so I can't imagine there'll be any problems with it). I hope the quality is ok, I've kept the size large to try to make it readable.

Thanks for the scans.

Some details worth noticing in the engine bay :
- 951 Cup-like strut brace brackets
- additionnal moulding in the first runner of the intake manifold
- various pressure/temp (?) probes (green wiring) ; by then the mapping might not have been completed yet.

Thanks. I was only going to post the engine bay pic, but the rest of it is good too. I'm amazed that they let them photograph that, clearly it wasn't quite production ready! I assume it was only the RS version that had the carbon/kevlar strut brace, they look like a real work of art.

I remember reading another article (in English too) in which the reviewer was asked by the project manager to be careful with it as it (this yellow example) was the only one they had built at the time Porsche introduced the turbo S to the public.
For sure the two "production" cars I got to watch up close did not feature the strut brace brackets and had a standard 944 turbo intake manifold.

I still cannot understand how this car could cost as much new as apart from parts like the twin pipe exhaust, clutch, turbo and head, which could have been handmade at "reasonable" costs by Hans in his backward barn, all the rest was standard 951/968

FWIW I believe this example is owned by one secretary of the various Porsche Clubs in Germany - well, at least there are pictures of a yellow turbo S in the German Club section of the Porsche website.
