PORSCHE MACAN: TELL ME I'M WRONG

ORIGINAL: spyderman Incidentally I have recently found myself - for the first time - looking at Chelsea Tractors, specifically the Discovery 4. Not because I have a kid to take to school (which something like a Fiat 500 would to totally adequately) but as a tow car for my Porsche race car! I understand it can tow 3.5 tonnes! Chris.
Yes, Chris, it tows 3.5 tonnes - most of that must be its own body and chassis though!! Buy a Cayenne! [;)]
 
I know these are old posts and that a lot of water has since flowed etc. but I'm staggered and frankly disappointed by the blinkered and prejudiced viewpoints expressed by some that simply reinforce the worst fears about how a Macan owner's membership will be received.

I bought a petrol S 12 months ago for a number of very rational reasons. I have never yearned to be an SUV Chelsea tractor owner but I love to drive and came from a TT. My wife, though, has a chronic back condition and could longer manage the low height, and as a discerning buyer I could not find/identify with whatever else was on offer. Macan fitted the bill as near as is possible. It is a supremely comfortable drivers car.

Our Macan may have 4 seats, a V6 and PDK and doesn't have an air cooled engine or even a flat six but it is in every sense a Porsche. Porsche sold 80,000 Macan and 60,000 Cayenne last year (oh another intruder) and, for sure, they provide the income and cashflow that enables Porsche to produce all those wonderful machines and their limited edition derivatives that we all love and hanker after. Prior to the emergence of these two machines, though, Porsche were barely viable: a low volume specialist maker.

I'd love a 911 or a Cayman or a Boxster or, lottery willing, a 356, but for some of us this is just not possible. I don't even have a drive or a garage, for goodness sake, but I know a good product when I see and experience one. And the Macan is a cracker.

Hello Dandock and welcome - I thought I recognised the name (from the Macan Owners Forum)

I appreciate the Macan for what it is - it ticks all my boxes. My Cayman wouldn't accommodate the grandchildren, or tow the caravan, or give me 4 wheel drive security. The build quality and interior finish knock the opposition into a cocked hat.

My GTS is also a cracker.

On UK roads as they are, and with advancing years a Macan suits us perfectly. Prestige, quality engineering, a smooth ride or outrageous performance when you want it, (well for 2 ton SUV anyway). Since 2014 the Macan has been a huge worldwide success, due deserts for a Proper Porsche.

 
Think of it this way: the Boxster has been migrated to a 4-cylinder as part of the company's drive to reduce overall emissions; the Panamera, Cayenne and Macan have been added to the line to reduce the company's reliance on sports cars, taking the brand into other areas. Porsche are certainly not alone in either of these aspects. Porsche purists don't like either, but the reality is that Porsche cannot exist purely as a volume sports car maker - legislation and markets dictate diversification.

 
Having had a variety of BMWs and Mercedes cars over the years - saloons, estates, convertibles, coupes - I now find I need a car to accommodate my grandchildren with their car seats without abandoning driving dynamics and great performance. Having struggled now for 3 years getting them in and out of a 2-door Merc E-coupe, 4-doors were an essential. After intensive research the Macan S diesel is my choice for a brand new car that will be delivered in early May. Never thought I'd go for a diesel SUV, but equally I really don't think electric cars are the answer with their long recharge times and restricted number of charging points across the UK. After an 8-month delivery lead time, I just hope the Macan will be worth the wait.
