Porsche Museum + Alps Trip

We did a similar trip two years ago and I would certainly recommend the Furka, Grimsel and Susten passes. They make a great circular route for the day and are pure driving pleasure.

One thing I forgot to mention about the 924GTR at the museum was that in the info about it they talk about how it wasn't a 924 at all but actually more a 944 turbo, which I assume means it was running the all new Porsche 2.5l turbo charged engine and this when the 944 wasn't yet in existence.

Food for thought.

Indeed.

Nice to know they test things thoroughly isn't it!
More details and photos here, if you are interested.

I second all the above comments on your excellent write-up. I followed a similar route a few years back - I'd definitely like to return in a proper car, now the 944 is back on the road.

It was a prototype engine, but it had a twin cam head, I believe. It had more in common with an S2 engine than a 951, but calling it a 944 is stretching things. Its a 937 with a different engine.

The Porsche Museum words not mine Simon, I guess they might know a bit about there own cars...

They even wrote '944 Le Mans' on the cylinder head.

Or maybe its a typo?[:D]

937 with 2.5l turbo Porsche engine would probably make it a 944 prototype that they decided to test at Le Mans.

ORIGINAL: After a week the drive back was a non stop stint through France up to Calais and although the roads were long straight and emtpy, this made them a bit boring. You could drive at a pace here and no one would really notice.

Good write up, but do not underestimate the potential for being noticed by the French Police or Gendarmes.

There are hidden Radar Traps, number plate recognition cameras on over head gantries, patrols and various speed cameras.

It is quite common to get 'Pulled' at the next toll booth and it is an on the spot fine proportionate to the excess speed.

50 kph over the limit can be a custodial offence and one's car can be impounded.

For me, it's cruise control set just under 10% above the limit and then 'No one would really Notice' ! [:)]

Great pics Olli.

I'd like to buy the man who stepped-in to rescue the 924 'styling study' a drink.

Nice shot of the GTP car titanium driveshafts - I'm still waiting for a pair to crop up on ebay...
