Porsche R&D officials suspended

Some good points being made in Post #20, which also mentions fuel consumption figures. I saw an email from Which? yesterday which also included the latter in connection with a request for the vehicle manufacturers to "come clean".

Pete, I can see that you have a bee in your bonnet, but think that you are missing the point. The state/EU is principally interested in C02, which is harmless - in fact its what we were made out of!

California's standards are different to ours, of course, but theyre also far, far stricter.

On a separate note, I suspect that all ECUs are tuned (at the VERY LEAST) to perform well on the EU lab cycle. Whether that is fraud or not, to manufacturers, appears to be dependent on whether it was VAG doing it, or them... I expect that it will transpire that VAG ECUs recognise the lab test cycle and refer to an alternative look-up table, rather like a cheaty limp-mode, but we will only find out when the dumbed down media stop reporting 'cheat devices'.

At the end of the day, the manufacturers were told they had to build cars to a standard or else. They were also told the test they had to pass. They complied.
The revelation that this standard is flawed is a gift to the environmentalists and politicians that pushed diesel as the green (is it blue now? everything 'green' now sees to be blue.) fuel of choice. They created the standard and the test, and then realised how filthy it really was. All of this makes a great diversion while they're busy passing the buck and getting their own stories straight.

I don't understand how they could have thought that diesel wasn't dirty?..anyway we all live by our own experiences in life and mine with diesel wasn't good..it made me ill, I'll explain. During the 80's i worked most of that decade for ICI and we all drove VW cars, for me this was a 1.6 golf petrol, our cars were renewed every 12 months so hardly old. Mid eighties the fleet managers decided to go over to diesel in an attempt to save money and without going into details it was during this hand over period that I became aware of diesel not liking me, not one little bit. Luckily for me I discovered this in a courtesy car while mine was in for service so after discussions with those in power my planned new car was changed for petrol but ICI kept the with the diesels for two years as already stated. The reason that they ditched these cars was cost of servicing and down time due to how often they needed servicing, I don't think my issues had any part in their decision but you never know?.. this stuff is dangerous especially to those who's body doesn't respond well to it. Sorry if I'm coming over as having a 'bee in my bonnet' but it's for good reason, I have never understood the push on diesel cars, I can for lorries due to the torque for heavy loads but not cars. Now in recent years the world has begun to wake up and realise what my body told me decades ago and I look forward to the day when diesels in car form are a thing of the past. I'll be in paradise if/when they do the same thing to lorries and many thousands who do literal get sent to paradise early ( if they've been good) may spend a little longer on this mortal plain thanks to the ban on diesel engines...I live in hope...

vw saga sounds so much like F1 doesn't it

A new rule/test created
Product created which complies with rule/test
someone complains it's not in the 'spirit' of the rule/test
it gets banned and the perpetrator is demonised for even considering being creative

what gets my goat the most is the ambulance chasing lawyers stiring up mis informed journalists demanding all sorts of compensation and replacements

Perhaps the authorities should use some people with motorsport experience in future. There's an industry that takes rule bending to a new level. If anyone can spot loopholes in the regulations it would be those guys.
As far as mis-selling is concerned....the published test results are true, so no fraud there. As far as diesel being clean in general? it wasn't the car manufacturers who created that myth. Let's face it, consumers. You'd have to be deaf, blind, have no sense of smell and be daft as a brush to believe you were saving the planet by buying one wouldn't you?

I'm NOT a Barrack Room Lawyer but what would be the point of not being compulsory? Added check to MOT test and other roadside checks.

Cheers,
