Porsche Recalling 18,600 911 Carreras
Associated Press

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Luxury car maker Porsche AG said Wednesday it is recalling more than 18,600 of its 911 Carrera series to replace the exhaust pipe.

The Stuttgart-based company said in a statement that the 18,627 cars being recalled part of the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S lines and were produced between April 2004 and October 2005.

Porsche said the welding seams on the exhaust pipe could weaken, causing it to ultimately fall off. The company said there were about 30 known cases of that happening, but that there were no injuries reported.

The 911 Carrera S, with a stick shift, retails for about $81,400, while the Carrera 4S, with a manual transmission, retails for approximately $87,100.

The company's cars come in four different models, including the Boxster, the 911 series, the Cayenne sport utility vehicle and the Carrera GT.

Despite the recall, shares of Porsche gained 1.5 percent to 628 euros ($757.62) in Frankfurt trading.

Thanks Mark - wonder if I could convince them I had a sports exhaust which must have fallen off !

Thanks!

I wonder if my OPC is going to charge for this work as is consistent with the TMC issue. [8|]

Porsche 911 Carrera S and Carrera 4S
Exchange of exhaust tailpipes

Stuttgart. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is having the exhaust tailpipes exchanged worldwide on 18,627 units of the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S. This involves cars built between 20 April 2004 and 21 October 2005.

The exhaust tailpipes fitted to the tail mufflers during this period might have inadequate welding seams between the fastening clamp and the tailpipe itself. Since these welding seams may break, there is a risk of a rattling noise developing on the tailpipes while driving. Should the driver keep on going nevertheless, the tailpipes may fall off. So far approximately 30 cases have been reported worldwide, leading to reports from customers.

The cars involved are required to spend about 25 minutes at the workshop. The remedy is to fit new exhaust tailpipes to the tail muffler with improved welding seams ensuring a safe and firm connection. The recall is naturally free-of-charge to customers, who will be informed shortly.

Looks like it's only the tips (weren't these often rusty anyway?)

Good grief - I spent 1 hour with emery cloth and brasso on Sunday cleaning mine up (sad I know)!!

I'm sure there are more extreme examples of 'sad behaviour'.

Would preparing your car for a councours event be the ultimate extreme??

I wonder if they would fit the PSE system for the difference in price between the 'spare parts' prices of the PSE system and teh standard system.

Presumably if you wanted the loud/not so loud switch there would be a charge for fitting that as well.

interesting... I've recently noticed a rattling noise from both sides of exhaust pipes of my Jan05 C2S once the car has been running for a while.

I'd put it down to the odd bit of "spirited" driving.

I have also noticed that when my exhausts are up to temperature (Sep'04), there is a nasty "tinny" buzzing from the pipes on tickover - I assumed it was part of the "character" albeit something I don't like - perhaps this will sort it?

Has anyone been contacted by their OPC yet?

I have just received an answer from my OPC - It only applies to the American market at present.

They will probably get around to us in about 2 years? I'm dissapointed now as I will have to put up with the irritating buzzing noise!

nsm3 - if the part has actually gone wrong then why not put it in as a warranty claim?

My (996) exhaust did the same, making a nice rorty rattle at about 3,000 rpm when the engine was half warm. I quite liked it, actually, but mentioned it in case there was the potential for concern. It turned out that a weld seam had come loose, and although I didn't get a new tailpipe they did tidy it up under warranty so that parts were not rattling.

Good point, my car is due to go in to sort out the front N/S caliper/disk and set up the homelink so I will mention it then.

It isn't a nice "blowy" sort of noise it is a horrible metallic buzzing only at tickover.

nsm3, that's the noise I'm getting and agree with you, not a good noise and certainly doesn't make the exhaust sound better.

I'm going to mention it to my OPC as mine is due in for the workshop recall on 997 affected with the clutch cable problem.

Just had an update from OPC via e-mail.

Porsche GB are awaiting instruction from Germany before they do or don't launch an exhaust recall here.

So we may all get nice new tailpipes yet?

A UK poster on another forum has had a recall "Recall campaign A601" to replace his tailpipes for an '04 car, so I will be getting onto OPC shortly.

Got home last night and there was a recorded delivery letter from Porsche waiting from me...

Recall Campaign A601: Replacing both exhaust tailpipes.

So it's official.

Just had confirmation from OPC - mine is due to have new tailpipes - I hope that sorts out the buzzing problem?
