Porsche Recalling 18,600 911 Carreras

Hi Robin
I am experiencing a small (exhaust?) rattle when starting up from cold and leaving at idle. It seems to disappear when it warms up and on the move - is this the mentioned exhaust tip problem? Mine is an Oct 04 model 997S.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Rob

Your car falls within the build period for the recall, 20 April 2004 to 21 October 2005.

Check with your OPC against recall A601, this is now active in the UK.

Thanks for that nsm3 - I'll get onto them next week and they can sort out the rusty wheel nuts at the same time. Hopefully it will leave me rattle free on startup.
Cheers
Rob

So I suppose that it would be very wise for any purchaser of a 997 to check with the vendor that the recall A601 has been undertaken/completed?

Just slightly "off topic" but once I have had my new tailpipes fitted I am considering a Tubistyle muffler upgrade to enhance the soundtrack somewhat. I bought "used approved" with a good spec. sheet but unfortunately no PSE.

Has anyone got experience of changing exhaust components and subsequently fallen foul of warranty issues for components other than the obviously changed parts?

Hi
No, no letter as yet - I will cite your example when I book it in. Unfortunately my OPC seems to get through a lot of staff which seems to imbue a lack of continuity of contact with customers. However, as an optimist, I will check my doormat for a letter this week - you never know[:D]!
Thanks!
Rob

Just phone them up and ask them to check the database. Mine was listed as needing the clutch cable "workshop campaign" and despite a number of phone calls about other matters, my OPC didn't mention it once; I just asked and they were like o yeah, your car is coming up as needing that work done, we could do that for you next time your car is in.

Cheers Ronnie
Good to know that I'm not alone with a dealer that has to be prompted for warranty work - I wonder why??[;)]
Funnily enough, got a letter today for a service, despite it having another 9 months to go before it's 2 yr schedule - I may have to point this out to them, as it's obvious someone hasn't read the 997 service plan!
I ask you........!

I received a recorded delivery letter yesterday but haven't seen the contents yet as I'm away. However, the gist has been conveyed to me and it states that there may be insufficient seam welds on the exhaust which may cause it to initially rattle and ultimately fall off. The car is required to be booked in as part of a recall to replace the exhaust/tips. I think that's what the letter says anyway. I'll sort it out when I get back next week.

Just had the OPC on the phone, my August 05 ( MY06 ) car has got to have its pipes done too, monday hopefully.

I will report back on whether I can tell any difference.

Yves

I can't book mine in yet because the parts are on backorder.

Guess it's going to have to wait.

Sunil

Got the new pipes on, definately less buzzy/flappy ( is that the right term ? ) at manouvering speeds and seems a bit less noisy 5-6000 RPM. [:)]

Not managed a redline test yet cos Im not quite at 2k miles on the engine. [:(]

YvesD, I collect mine tomorrow, with new pipes and about 9 other items hopefully repaired successfully?

It has 13k miles on it so I will gladly carry ou the redline test, in the interests of other posters of course!!

9???

997 C2S (Sep'04) - They had the car in for 2 days and the repair/modification list was quite extensive;
  • New tailpipes - completely changed the exhaust note from a woofly/blowy rattle to a crisp/sharp rasp ( I cannot believe that only the tailpipes are involved as the change is quite dramatic?)
  • Replaced the airbox/intake arrangement?
  • Replaced part of the oil return piping system?
  • Fitted a clip and re-routed/adjusted the gear linkage cable
  • Fitted new wheel bolts all round - including the locking ones
  • Solved buzzing instrument binnacle by replacing the ignition barrel surround?
  • Fixed faulty boot light switch
  • Freed up possibly sticking N/S caliper/piston
The only dissapointment was that my garage door opener is incompatible with the car sender unit as the car works at 433 mHz and the door doesn't. The door people know of the problem (asked if I had a BMW) but have no fix (frequency convertor) at the moment, which is a pity as the door motor is made in Germany - thought they may have checked!

I must say that I am really impressed with the service provided by my local OPC on this one, which seems to run contrary to some posts I have read?

PS: YvesD, bounced it off the limiter a couple of times in 2nd and it sounds fine!

nsm3,

Thanks for carrying out the hooligan test, I ended the week on 1954 miles and I promised myself 2000 miles before taking the artificial pit lane limiter off ! Also, I have not pressed the sport button yet so looking forward to that M3esque step up in sharpness and contolability. Next week should be nice.

Pleased to hear that the OPC have addressed your concerns, let us know if the instrument buzzing re-occurs wont you. I have had mine in to the dealer a couple of times for minor things and so far, very pleased with the service.

Regards

Yves

Just spoke with my OPC yesterday in regard to the rusty wheel nuts and asked if there were any campaigns for recall outstanding, esp in regard to the A610 exhaust and the (pleasant) service chap told me my car needed 6 areas of warranty work!
He was hoping to contact me after obtaining a replacement fuse box cover for in the footwell which apparently needs to be sorted under warranty. We decided that that could wait and the other more pressing areas would be addressed Wednesday next week, when he will have the car for 2 days.
It will be interesting to see how it drives after all that work!
Glad I phoned them up now!![&:]

I received my recall letter and rang OPC to arrange suitable date. When I reminded them that I had chromed tailpipes (factory fitted) and wanted them back on the car when it was returned it caused great confusion. Apparantly this is a grey area for them and they are awaiting confirmation from PorscheGB that chromed tailpipe systems are included in the recall. They suggested I ring back in a few weeks to see if PorscheGB have responded !!!!

Anyone with chrome tailpipes had their system replaced under this recall?

Keith

Those who have had this recall work done... which OPCs were willing to do you a free upgrade to chrome tips?

Reading other forums, I've noticed some people have been lucky enough to get a chromed tips for no charge.

Just booked mine in with Swindon / Dick Lovett and they're not willing to do it for me :(
