Porsche Switchable Exhaust System (PSE)

You could also try unplugging the PSE cable in the engine bay. This is straightforward and ensures the PSE is always on, e.g. with no auto cutoff at speed. If you're going to the OPC just plug back in again.

On the 981 series, it is a vacuum that operates the louder exhaust setting and the water cooling system valves are also operated by the same vacuum source.

So if your car is the same, you need to cap the exhaust vacuum tubes else you will stop the water cooling system valves working correctly.

My understanding is that it won't invalidate your warranty, however if something in the area of the modification was to fail as a direct result then this wouldn't be covered.

Not entirely accurate. The extended warranty contract specifically precludes fitting non-Porsche approved parts without first obtaining written consent. So it can void warranty because the contract is breached . By the same token, the vehicle may also fail the 111 point PC check when the time comes to renew.

Hi Guy's not sure why this post has raised so much an interest again as I first raised the post in 2016, anyway I had a Porsche switchable exhaust fitted in 2016 to my 997.2 C2S (DFI engine) and am really please with the sound, on start up the noise is loud and then it switches over to quiet mode which I then have to select on again, the louder exhaust note then remains open from approx. 0 to 35 mph and then closes until approx. 45 mph before it reopens. Inside the cab you cannot notice much change, but if you open the windows or let some drive your car or ask a friend to listen outside of the speed times quoted there really is a noticeable difference from the standard exhaust noise. So in summary I am very pleased, I have heard some of the after market exhausts fitted and they are far to loud in my opinion unless you are an 18 year old boy racer.

regards

Pete

Hi Nigel,

I'm new to this and recently bought a 2005 CS triptronic, and I would like to fit a PSE probably from Guildford/Brooklands as I live in KT12.

I was trying to get to the R29 Silvermere monthly last night but that become impossible.

Previously I had an alfa 4c so I miss some sporty exhaust note, if I could get a chance to hear yours before I commit that would be great Thanks Neil

Afternoon folks, old thread though still relevant to me

I've just been quoted £2,787 for PSE retrofit to my 997.2 by Leeds OPC. Anyone think it's worth me asking other OPC to see if there's a significant difference in price? Chap at OPC said in theory all OPCs would quote the same amount

I run a noisy old sports car that pops, bangs and might even produce the occasional flame out of the exhaust on occasion, but also can run rather quietly when required, all of which seems ideal though noise regs have changed and unlike speed noise as yet seems not to be widely cracked down upon via roadside monitoring...?

As ever Porsche seem to be ahead of the game with the introduction of the Sound Symposer, introduced with the 991.1 which transmits enhanced induction sounds into the cabin in specific conditions for those like me who are so very fond of the ICE and all the sounds it can make.

I do like the whole idea of the symposer system in that one is perhaps not annoying the local populace and attracting unwanted attention while still able to enjoy the sounds one`s Porsche emits when in the mood so to do.

With that in mind and dependant on whether your 997 is restricted by the extended warranty or not... Perhaps it might be worth looking at the possibilities of retrofitting some aspects of the symposer system to your 997...?

There is quite a bit of detail on Porsche mechanical noise available via the link below, though if you scroll down to Airboxes, Sound Symposers, you can hopefully find some detail that might interest you.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Kennyboy993. As this was initially an old thread and I had the time, I just thought to add a degree of alternative consideration for both you and the thread in general...

Additionally my guess is that some enthusiasts or indy garages might have that which you are looking for kicking about in a corner of the garage, having a reasonable to good condition exhaust system, to fit stainless or louder silencers etc...Thus perhaps worth an add or a few phone calls...?

Just thinking in type..

Good luck in your decision making process..

Thanks geedee, I appreciate you taking the time. I did have a read of that article you linked actually - very interesting.

I wanted pse on my car as I’d like it to quality for Porsche warranty at some point even though it doesn’t have one now.

I think I’ll take the plunge and invest in local OPC

Update on this - I've been speaking with my local OPC to negotiate a price.

They mentioned my PCGB membership only allows me discount on parts for MOT and servicing - not for upgrades like this, could anyone confirm that please?

My Centre gives me PCGB discount and more on parts. Most centres will give a discount anyway particularly if they get to fit the parts.

thanks, are you saying your centre gives you discount on parts even when the work is not either a service or MOT? My centre is saying yes discount on parts but does not apply for retro fitting PSE i.e. no PCGB discount for this

OK cheers guys, is good info. I've gone back to OPC Leeds to challenge them on their policy for member discounts - I'm not getting any movement from them at the moment, PCGB related or otherwise

Get a quote from a different OPC. I saved over £500 using Guildford over Brooklands. Once they quote you, play them off against each other. They will both want your business.

I enquired about PSE for a 997.2 recently and it was out of stock and on back order at all OPCs i phoned. Allegedly some components were being made in Ukraine (the harness i think) and therefore not getting shipped anymore. They told me the next update would be June with no guarantee though of production resuming. I ended up buying the full valved system from topgear, including the centre bypass x-pipe, it's being fitted now. Let's see how it comes out !
