Porsche trackday evening Brands Hatch 21 August

I've managed low 59's in our little golf GTI when racing, but never been timed in the GT3...always wondered what it would do though, but as I'd never use it on a test or race day I guess I'll never know.

Spyderman, not sure who you do your arrive and drives with, but I was chatting with a sales guy from RPM (I've no links with them, so no vested interest). They prep cars that are used in your series and had one of their cars out on track at Brands. It looked pretty sorted, so might be worth looking into if boxsters are going to stay the car of choice. All the best saving those pennies, you never know we might end up on track at some point so let us know what series you end up in.

I've driven the RPM boxster its a nice car, and a good package for arrive and drive (they have others). RPM do look after my clubbie.

Not been to brands in a while, but an a 964RS shouldnt struggle to do 57s in trackday conditions. I'm sure for test/race there would be a bit more.

I know the RPM guys pretty well and I've driven the RPM Boxster at Silverstone. Did feel good on track, but not quite as good as the Newbridge car I race. Its currently for sale at a not inconsiderable price.

I could have bought our golf 4 times over for that kind of money and still have change for race entry fees for the year [;)]

Being back on track in the Porsche has wetted the appetite for using it properly again though. Is anyone booked in for any bargain track days over the next few months?

Porsches are never going to be a cheap way of going racing though are they? 924 / 944 the possible exception. Maybe Boxsters will get there. I recall a couple of good threads on the cost of converting boxsters for racing and the costs invovled.

:)

In the club championship dry race at Brands earlier this year Mark Sumpter's 964C2 was a smidge over 55 seconds. Ben Demetriou got the fastest lap in the race with a 54.65 when winning it in his Boxster. That says to me that a 964RS on a trackday would need a very handy man at the wheel to get within 2 seconds of them. Are you up for the challenge Hugh? [;)]

I have no doubt an RS would really tank it round there - but would anyone really want to risk it? For upwards of ÂŁ60k, I certainly wouldn't!

Well Neal , Boxsey and myself are booked in to Donington National Circuit 24 Sep with Circuit Days , OK its ÂŁ239 for the day so may not fit your idea of a bargain - they dont give me any pensioner discount - but its a brilliant track and less intimidating than most with generous run-off areas , you would have to be unlucky to have a serious shunt.

I dont know if we can persuade any proper 964RSs to come out to play , we will be in common 964s but would really like some GT3 pace cars [:D]

I'm there the week before with the CSCC Tin Tops, so it would be a bit of fun to compare how different it feels in the Porsche. I might just join you [:D]

Brands is my home track. Best i've managed is a mid 57 on almost new R888's in my virtually stock 64RS. I think my times are still up on the traqmate website under their share and compare . www.traqmate.com. I spun at paddock a few laps later so I guess i was trying a bit !

The only to watch is that 997 GT3s often fail the 98 db driveby at Donington. Using 3rd rather than 2nd at the chicane can often sneak you past it though [;)]

Gave this one a miss as I'd made plans to go to Silverstone on Sunday and Coombe Monday to watch. The lads are there in the MGZ and not sure if they took the XJS. The golf has the top end off at the mo after it let go at Silverstone, just need to put it back together fo Donnington next week [:D]

Hi Laurence , I have now had the chance to look at some data analysis for BH , using Race Technology DL1 . The main point of interest is the simulated laps using 'my' 964 parameters . The simulation says 52.2 secs is possible [:-]

I decide the way to tackle this is to start with study the individual corners and look at apex speeds
The only place I am better than SIM is on the apex of Druids hairpin , actually carrying 45mph cf simulation at 43mph , this however is topped and tailed by my being slower in and slower out [:D]

Anyway , it looks like I can brake later into Paddock Hill and improve from 64 to 70mph at apex ... repeat Druids.. improve at Graham Hill apex from 47 to 53 mph ...and can avoid braking at Surtees (unless this results in over 80mph at apex!)....improve at Clearways apex from 50 to 55mph.

Once I have mastered the above the only bit left is joining up the corners with a lot more full throttle [;)]

The above should get me halfway between my 62 secs now and the SIMs 52 secs which is 57 secs - job done !

Anybody got any idea what a decent time for the GP circuit is in a 964 RS ? Been looking for some comparison points but struggling to find them.

Sounds like a great night was had by all.

Ben

Ben, I would suggest 1 min 45-50 secs would be a good time to achieve on the GP for a relatively standard car with a competent driver on a clear track.

Put it this way you should be inside 1.50 and I would be more than impressed with anyone who could better 1.40 in a standard 964RS.

( I don't really consider slicks, cup suspension and engine chips as standard equipment? :) )

Thanks Paul.

I'll have to check my GoPro download to see how I was getting on against the Clubsport benchmark. Felt like I was going okay so be interesting to see. Motor is down on power and going in for a rebuild so I will have that excuse if I'm way off the mark.
