Porsche Vehicle Tracking system

If the vehicle is pre-wired won't this mean that all trackers will be located in the same place and therefore be easier to remove should the car be stolen.

A very good point Paul. Although I suspect that my Tracker Horizon is fitted in the same location as many other 997's. Anyway in a few months time, Porsche will expect to charge customers a further fee to make "their" tracking system work in the UK![;)]

I think most Tracker's are fitted in the same place regardless of pre-wiring or not.
I went to get my car fitted with a Tracker. The garage called to tell me they were just about to fit it but saw the old one in there so they didn't fit a new one. (My car wasn't advertised as having a Tracker fitted so I didn't know)

Makes a mockery of the whole system. All thieves will know where they are fitted and so would be able to remove them if they so wished.

I was told that there are typically three or four places on a car where it will be installed. I don't know how feasible this is because I have no idea how big the unit is, but even if there are a number of places to hide the unit, that may still not deter a professional thief.

Hi,

very interesting, I phoned Cobra last week and the tech guy told me this IS the one porsche are using this year,

http://www.cobravehiclesecurity.co.uk/contact/default.asp?docId=12411

I would not have one factory fitted as they will be in the same place,

I had a 996 C4S nicked last year and the Horizon was whipped out in minutes, the car was only recovered because tracker managed to activate an old unit fitted before I bought the car.

I would advise fitting the cobra system in a covert location, a basic tracker in the factory location, (I know where this is but probably not a good idea to post it, this will be in a hedge in minutes ) and a timed fuel pump cut out secret button. The fuel pump kills the car, the cobra locates it,

I am due to collect my C4s next week and rang Porsche Insurance to get a quote. I was told that if I dont have the Porsche tracking system fitted and opt for another manufacturer , then Porsche will void the warranty on the entire electrical system. Has anyone else heard this as it sounds pretty draconian to me?

Paul

I can't believe that Porsche can do this. I'm not a lawyer but this sounds like restrictive practice to me.

I checked with my OPC (Tonbridge) who confirmed it today. Apparently its to do with power consumption of the unit. The Porsche tracker consumes something like 6milliamps versus 200+ for the other systems. Also the Porsche system is Cat 5 and they (OPC) reckon that insurers may well demand Cat 5 for all Porsches in a year or so and possibly demand upgrades to existing tracker systems. I feel resigned to take the Porsche system with with the annoyance of keeping the card with me when driving.

Interestingly, this is now a mandatory 'option' on the new Turbo & GT3.

I wonder how well the insurance companies will receive it ?

Perhaps next we will have to use Porsche insurance too........

hi, for what it's worth, i had a tracker horizon fitted at the OPc, and it cost about £800 all-in. annual fee is £109. My wife has a Merc 4X4 and to get insurance we needed a tracker Horzn, and i must say, when it went to the garage for a service, and was raised off the ground, tracker were immediately on the phone to my wife telling her her car may have been stoloen! so i guess that's somewhat re-assuring.
