PORSCHE WARRANTY FINAL THOUGHT

Hi all, had my 997s since july last year, bought from main agent, 18k miles, 54 plate been told not to waste my money on renewing the warranty. have to say i have a great car, not missed a beat in a year, low mileage and low mileage use and am thinking its a waste of money. All that said, i thought id throw it our for debate as i value the thoughts of club members and their expereinces....guys, help me make a decision here please....tks

depends how much spare cash you have in case of big failure, how risk taking you are etc etc.i chose not to renew as i object to paying £900 for a 2yr old 50k plus car (when new),when it should be free till at least 3yrs of age.others (the majority probably)pay the £900 for peace of mind.if i get a big bill its not the end of the world.-if it would be for you then take the warranty-if not then its up to you

thats my point, whats the worst it can be financially if something went wrong and how likely is it? if i got told i was looking 5k in the face id be hacked off but cud cover it but is that likely to happen to a car thats done 18k miles.....

Extended warranty is an insurance product and like all insurance the total expected payouts must be less than the cumulative premiums so by definition on average and in the long-run you would be better off keeping your money in your pocket. I have never taken out an extended warranty on anything I've bought to date.

But - I will be buying the extended warranty in a couple of months time. Irrational I know but I think it has something to do with my sub-conscious mapping of probability v impact. I also factored the cost of three years worth of extended warranty into my original purchase decision - I added £3k onto the bottom line and convinced myself I was buying a car with a five year warranty. Which only serves to prove that the mind can rationalise the irrational - it just has to want to.

Hi. The Worst it can be finacially is around £12K if you need a new engine or £7K if you need a new gearbox. Chances of this fairly slim but it does happen. Items such as Wheel bearings are NOT Covered and it is worth considering if the risk outweighs the reward in taking out the warranty. Its an individual choice really. I have never claimed on mine (everything I have tried to claim for has nor been covered), but have used the fact of having it to get Porsche to cut charges for a faulty wheel beairng and a cracked exhaust tail peice. They are definatelty winning on what I pay for the warranty though!

is that likely to happen to a car thats done 18k miles

nope.not likely.....but possible!!

i keep a "reserve"high interest account of 5-10k in case

RMS at 18k plus leaking oil pressure switch, faulty horn and coil pack at 23K - all under extended warranty.
I shall be renewing at year end!!

Andy

I will be renewing mine next year..[]
I hope I don't have to claim, but I do factor in that I then have Porsche breakdown assist, which whether the fault is in or out of warranty would get you to safety.
Sure you could just join the RAC, but its not the same team..
Porsche warranty compared to some brands of vehicle is not the dearest.. nor does it have an excess on claims made..

Correct ! '54 plate C2S coupe. The latter issues were picked up when the headlights were changed back after the Driving Adventures Riviera trip in April this year - none of which I was aware of!

My first Boxster at 18k miles lunched its return drive shaft, bits of metal got every where - new engine plus shafts and repairs/repalcements to other substancial parts. I had just bought the extended warranty 3 weeks earlier...................

Its risk reward but I may well be taking out the extended warranty on my 997

problem is- david-that for every costly story there are probably hundreds(if not 1000`s)of unclaimed warranty periods.no easy answer

Don't run the risk, just treat it as cost of ownership. After all £900 is only ten tanks of petrol.[:D]
My experience is that the EW paid for a new engine at 23,000 miles aat 28 months. £7500 for the motor not counting labour.

The IMs bearing was improved from 2006 model year, as was the RMSeal. There are cases of 987 BOxster engines on 05 MY suffering IMS failure, no reason to suspect the 997 should be any different, maybe more prone with more power ?
At 3.5 year old your coil packs will be starting to crack due to heat from the exhausts - these are £35 each DIY, £75 each fitted at an Indi or over £700k for a full set fitted at the OPC - these are warranty items !

At the end of the day its an insurance policy - Euro breakdown cover will cost you £130 for the same level of cover, so its 770 for the warranty. I consider it part of the running costs - its easier to lay my hands on £900 once a year than £12k for an engine or £9k for a gearbox at the drop of a hat.

All about your attitiude to risk 'm afraid !

Of my close Porsche owning colleagues about half have the warranty and half don't - those that have it have used it, sometimes to an amount less than the cover, but some at more (none with engine failures tho). Those that didn't maybe saved a few hundred quid a year through not having anything major go wrong.

If you opt out this year and then take it out later it will cost you a 111 point inspection (£130) and all ncessary work to be rectified BEFORE they issue a warranty.

IMO too.............

...
just an observation that it is only our opinion-not necessarily fact-
nothing more-
based on my experience -when i still had 2 months left on my new car warranty a gearbox cable /transmission problem arose (that i had mentioned previously)-cost £500-was told that it was "wear and tear"item and therefore not covered by warranty.(even tho car only covered 9k miles atthis point) so paid out £500 but decided that it wasnt worth renewing warranty if that was the opc position-again IMo_Others are welcome to their opinions based on their own experience
