Porsche Warranty

Sadly its a well known and talked about fact that to maintain the Porsche warranty you need to bend over for the 'Porsche approved' Battery.

- As is the issue for the battery strap, so fingers crossed the indy can sort it quickly and cheaply for you.

Strange as one of the first things they check before taking a car under warranty is the battery so the car should not have been eligible for warranty with that battery fitted? Did they inspect the car before putting it under warranty?

Just a note about my recent experience with Porsche Reading reference a Battery Alternator Warning Light.

I have my 2007 Porsche 997 Targa 4S (38k miles) with £1000+ annual warranty due to expire soon. I replaced the battery at ATS 18 months ago and having taken the car to Reading I have been told that as it was not a Porsche supplied battery they will not get authorisation to investigate the problem. Solution first is to buy a new Porsche battery (Bosch) for £414.00! For a Bosch battery!!! Reading tell me that unless they confirm on the form that the car has a Porsche supplied battery then the warranty won't be covered.

So, you pay a grand a year and then pay through the nose for a Bosch battery so that the dealer can look at your car and no doubt find out that it's a wear and tear issue and isn't covered! Nice work if you can get it! They have been chasing me for a couple of months to renew the warranty and guess what? They can whistle for it! I'm off to my local independent to get the problem sorted which is likely to be the common problem of high resistance in the cable between the battery and the starter.

It's in their terms and conditions, and it was a battery (strap) related fault. I don't think they are being unreasonable.

I've had many warranty claims fulfilled and I've had lots of unrelated non-standard parts fitted to my cars over the years. They tend to turn a blind eye if it's unrelated (even then they are in their rights to reject any claim).

What I find unpalatable is £414 for a battery that i can buy elsewhere for much less and the fact that they won’t even entertain checking what the problem is until I’ve paid up.

Thanks anyway for the comments.

My OPC who I have been a loyal customer of for years refused to renew the warranty until the hardwired dashcam was removed and they graciously quoted about £300 to do it! I note that some members are having ceramic coatings applied to their brand new cars at OPCs. As the ceramic coatings are not Porsche approved will that not invalidate their warranty? I understand that some OPCs turn a blind eye but Hatfield does not. I realise it does not sort out your problem but I decided to get a 3 year extended warranty from Motoreasy at a significant discount to the Porsche one. So far not had to use it.

Hi Richard i agree it is annoying but its one of those things placed there by Porche to protect themselves against faulty non Porsche parts being fitted and them having to stand over the cost of repair. When I looked into what others offerred I wasn’t convinced it matched the OPC one by what i read or by them when i discussed it with a few of them. Not sure what reading told you but Belfast OPC were very open with me about the requirements before I signed up.

Interesting about a ceramic coating not being Porsche approved. The OPC supplying my new car has offered me a Gtechniq treatment for the entire vehicle.

Is this a Porsche approved treatment or will it invalidate any anti-corrosion warranty and other aspects of the overall Porsche warrant?

I also used non OEM distilled water to top up the (8 year old) battery. Do you think they will find out?

All joking apart. My car has a Porsche warranty until September 2019 but I am getting rid of the car. Someone mentioned that I would be able to cancel the warranty and get some money back - it is only an insurance product after all. Is that correct?

I've never heard of a refund only that it is transferable. When you ask the question, let us know the answer.

Reading the paperwork, it can only be transferred to a private buyer or an official Porsche Centre. Selling the car to an independent dealer does not allow the warranty to be transferred. In which case, you can apply for a pro rata refund.

Hi Richard,

I had exactly the same issue, I wanted to extend my warranty last year and went into Porsche Reading who refused to give me the warranty without a battery change which I grudgingly agreed to, having had the battery replaced ( old good bosch for new) Porsche Reading suggested that I should purchase a trickle charger for the winter months which I did.

The battery failed last week so had to get Porsche Assist out which is the AA, no problem with that, however the technician did a test on the battery and it said replace battery, so I took this up with Porsche Reading to be told that the battery was not covered by the warranty and I must have overcharged it using the trickle charger which they had suggested when the battery was replaced .....BTW a Porsche one !

Anyway lesson learnt, I wont be going back and when the warranty is due I will be heading elsewhere.

It's such a shame Porsche as main dealer cant be a bit more supportive instead of taking the high ground and having been fleeced once I wont make the same mistake again, there attitude was sadly less than supportive and I didn't really feel much like a customer at all, not any suggestion of compromise whatsoever, sad day for both technical support and customer service.

Best Regards

Andy

Oh dear Andy, sorry you have had similar experience. My local independent have now replaced mine with an original Porsche battery now at £300 inc VAT and filling and installation. I tried to book my car back in to Reading for the new electric lead and they cannot see me until 16th April. My warranty runs out on the 13th April and they said that as it was a condition they are now aware of then that should be OK. 16th April is difficult for me as they want the car for a few days as they are VERY BUSY (as indeed I am too), so I suggested the following week and was told that may be too far outside the warranty but they would get back to me when they had spoken to Porsche. That was last Thursday. No call back yet!

Thanks Richard, when I spoke to their after sales manager this morning she told me that in no uncertain terms that they would not guarantee the battery if it failed even though its only 4 months old and effectively told me to drive the car more ! I have asked them to make sure that they make it clear that batteries are not covered under warranty and requested an email to this effect.

I then intend to take it up with Porsche direct, not expecting to get anywhere but at least I know where I stand and for the remaining warranty will probably go to another dealer if I have any further issues, drives me mad when you get very busy, like we don't have jobs and lives of our own too!

My biggest problem is that the goods sold are not fit for purpose however I don't think they are really interested sadly... Best of luck getting your with the electric lead sorted.
