Project: Restoration

Well, that's all 4 tyres changed now.
I like the feel of the continental Eco5 tyres. They are quiet and the ride feels good.
Gearbox oil tomorrow as its time for wine now.....

The new tyres grip is great. I have just been around the same roundabout that I spun on before. I went around a few times and had it up to 40mph with no slipping at all. I really can recommend the continental Eco5.

Gearbox oil.... The top plug came out easily. The bottom plug has been rounded off a bit and will not budge. I need to get it up on a ramp so I can put some pressure on the socket to try and stop it twisting out of the plug.
Anyway, it can wait. The whole point was I was worried there was not enough oil in the box as it was whining a bit. When I took the top plug out some oil ran out, so it's full. It looked quite a good colour, not too dirty. So, it can wait.

I have purchased 4 new injectors today. I got them for £65 so could not say no. I have had a few problems with my injectors so at that price it's a no brainer for me.

I've been meaning to replace the dodgy broken plastic air vent pipe to the alternator since I got the car, well today is the day...

I had a little too much play in the gear stick for my liking. I noticed a few days ago that a circlip was missing so I thought I would have to order a new one.... I was in a tool bag today for something completely different when I noticed a circlip lurking in the corner.... Well, you can guess the rest [:D]

The gear stick feels like new.

My new injectors have arrived from America... They are being held hostage at the post office until I go and pay them £18.13 customs charge...[:(]

Good and bad day... Mainly good.

I fitted my new injectors from America..... They were not new but reconditioned, I'll contact "dr injector" about that later, not happy.
Anyway, I read all the blurb that came with them and they read like a "professional" set up. So I thought they would be ok to fit as they would have been reconditioned to spec.
Easy job to fit, car started 2nd turn. Ran ok. Let it get to temp then went for a run.
Wow, what a difference. It pulled from low revs and the misfire I had was gone. I drove for about 4 miles and it raced to 80 easily. As I got back to my road it was not running as smoothly. It was like it was misfiring again...
So, long story cut short, 2 injectors are 100%, 1 is about 80% and the other is goosed.
I did an injector test to prove the above. I tested all 8 injectors I have and got 4 good ones. I will try and get 2 injectors sent to me when I complain....
On the plus side I have now proven that my poor running was not an electrical fault as I originally thought but injectors all along.
As it sits tonight the car is running better than it ever has. It drives like a different car. The engine is pretty much spot on now.
My son is taking it away again for a week so it will get a good testing.

Here is my test rig... [:D] It does work...

It's my methane injection setup..[;)]
I've had those tubs in the garage for a few years. I never throw handy tubs out.

Edinburgh OPC had a health check clinic at the weekend. I took the 924 along for a check over. I think they were pleased to see a couple of 924's turn up. The tech said it was the most solid example he had seen in a long time. It was great to get underneath and have a good look at the important bits that are not so easy to see with the car jacked up and on my back. All of the mounts are solid.
It's incredible that after 32 years the main structure is so solid. I'm very pleased indeed.

Well Done - A great example of what you can do when you put your mind to it. She is now running great, looking great, and ready to enjoy....[;)]

Cheers Donal..
I have been puting off fixing the exhaust manifold leak. The gasket has blown on cylinder 1 and I have been using exhaust paste, which has been working well. I was wanting to keep it going like this until the winter then repair, as if a bolt snaps the head might have to come off for repair. I think I'll do it sooner now. I should really start spraying the nuts with release oil for a week or so to let it work in.

That's the replacement injectors fitted this morning. I suppose I will have to get the colortune out and set the mixture up again as the injectors will probably be injecting a different amount of fuel to the original injectors.
It started first time and I went for a wee run. I think it's running a bit hot.
Anyway, I tested all the injectors and you might be able to see the fine mist the new injectors spray. Previously you could see jets of fuel.

This photo shows the volume of injectors 1+2 next to 3+4. They look equal to me so I'm happy they are well balanced.

That's the car in the garage to get the big jobs done now. I decided that I wanted to get the manifold off and the leak repaired before I do too many more miles. Looking at the studs I have a feeling I might have to take the head off to replace them. To be honest I am quite looking forward to the task. Photos to follow.... [:)]

Shouldn't need to take the head off to get the manifold off providing you can get heat shields etc off.
Just need a good selection of spanners and access from underneath too.
If you do decide to take the head off, make sure you can still get all the parts you'll need to put it back - I'm not sure that the head bolts are available anymore.

Interestingly before I knew they were stretch bolts I changed my head gasket ( I think it was gone when I bought it from a dealer, or going) and did another 40,000 mile on them before the big rebuild with new cam etc.
