Prospective purchase of a 3.2 Targa Sport

Hi guys

Is the targa roof leak (water) proof?

Is the car a good all year round type or just a dry season car?

It doesn't have ABS, but is this a major concern (NB: car to be used with young kids)?

Car considered is a 1988 with 67.5 k miles 4 owners pristine condition with OPC only SH. What would be the money to be paid on such a car?

Many thanks

Dom
Any advice given would be most appreciated.

I've only just bought one myself so I can't answer all your questions, and also mine is just a weekend toy. I doubt if any roofs will be totally leakproof on these cars, though I believe that leaks are more likely to occur with the car standing still in rain rather than when driving along. I have found mine to be fine so far. The brakes are very good as they need to be on such a car, but compared with the modern ones you are right in bearing in mind the lack ABS. I have installed 3-point rear seatbelts in mine since I didn't consider the lap belts only to be good enough, though you may find these already installed.

Price is tricky, depends on the colour also, but sounds like a £12.5-14.5K car to me.

I have a 1987 targa and have just had new seals fitted to the roof. It is now waterproof (it was out in the big storm last Monday) but I do have some wind noise. This can be very annoying, not so much when I'm on my own (I either listen the engine or turn the stereo up!) but it can be uncomfortable for less sympathetic pasengers!
Mind you, this is only at speeds above 69mph!!!!

Hi Dom,

I would say if the car is prestine as mentioned with only 4 owners and opc history, you could be looking higher than stated. Privately around £16,000 or through a specialist dealer up to £18,000. But it does also depend on the colour, spec etc as previously mentioned. With regard to the targa roof, it can be made both water and wind proof if you are prepared to spend the money on a custom refit....

Hi Dom,
I would agree with Simon and Alan on the roof. One additional tip..with the roof off you will get a whistle caused by the two rear roof mounting holes. Get a couple of bolts that fit in snugly, or if you are really flash (like FORDY)you can make some really aerodynamic plugs.
Practicality as a 365 day car is debatable bearing in mind the lack of ABS, Traction Control, pretty sad ventilation....and English winters. Also space is a problem.
Value is difficult but 16-18K sounds about right if its A1, and at that price, if racking up loads of winter miles, it will soon become average.
Get a 944 for the Winter and keep the 911 for the summer.

Do you really think £16-18K ?? Sounds a bit toppy for me, may be for the Coupe? It would have to be A1++++ for a targa at that amount and less mileage surely?

I paid £13.25K for my '86/G50/A1 condition/2 owners/One OPC full history/59K miles + £700 for new clutch.

Hi J,
I agree, it would have to be spot on for the higher price and from a dealer.
He says it's pristine.
Difficult without seeing the car. There are loads about all advertised as pristine, but when I was looking for mine, I soon realised that there were very few in real pristine condition and the ones that were really got good money.

Dom - Yes I think along with some of the other guys - £12,500 to £15,000 is the range.

My Targa top and seals were completely refurbed, but I still have one small annoying leak just above the drivers quarter light if it rains really hard and I am caught out in it by accident rather than design. Looks like a poor profile in the rubber more than anything.

Noise wise....way better than any of my previous 1950/60's English sports cars with the soft top up. I find it quieter with the roof right off! This also solves the poor cool air ventilation problem that some people moan about. Ultimately I solved the problem by fitting a louder exhaust!

I have to say I bought a high mileage car in very good condition with the view of using it in the dry weather, and not worrying too much about racking up the miles. Several well informed people told me buy on condition not mileage.

A Sloane Square special with 20-30k on the clock is likely to be worse off than one with a few more miles under its belt that has been driven on the open road. Check the location of the dealer service stamps, that should give you some idea of city or open road use

Brakes work fine, haven't been in a field yet (fingers crossed) and mine had 3 point harnesses in the back though they are never likely to be used.

I also agree that colour on a Targa can be important particularly when it comes to moving it on. Mine's black so all the rubber and vinyl bits tend to blend in to the main colour making the overall affect more cohesive.

Hope this helps

Steve

Simon

Did your car leak before you fixed the seals? If so, has it leaked since? How do you find driving at speed without ABS? Over the last few years, I have always had ABS. Would it be missed?

Thanks

Dom

...now Graham, if only I wasn't...now what is that word, oh yeah, married..

A 944 and a 911; just what would the trouble & strife say 'bout that!!!

Cheers

Dom

Dom - Check out all the normal places for 3.2's to go wrong body wise - Under headlights, bottom of door posts etc.etc. Check when it had the last clutch replaced (if at all). Lift up all the carpets and check for damp/rust/mould.

When I bought mine privately I spent half a day going all over, under and around it. I budgeted for a new clutch (£700). I also water tested the Targa with the chaps hose pipe! Just the little problem above the quarter light that I mentioned. Check the electric windows 'cause anything coming in the window Targa seal, can run down the inside and rust the window actuator/motors. (£350 a side inc. labour)

Check that the windscreen fits. I know this sounds crazy , but some Targa's "A" pillars have spread and the screen rubbers pull away on one side. If you ever need to replace the screen it is a swine of a job to get right if this has happened.

With mine all was okay. Had the clutch done about 4 weeks after purchase, but that was already taken into consideration.

Sounds a reasonable deal to me on the face of it.

Hope this is of use.

Steve

Excellent advice & thanks.

If interested, I will be asking local OPC to do a 111 point check.

Cheers

Dom

I went from a Ford Galaxy Diesel to an '88 3.2 Targa !! No probs with practicality as the wife has a C-MAX !!

Seriously, my 2 year old loves it in the back - Quickfit did the child seat - and there's more space than you might think if you pack it properly.

Lack of ABS isn't a problem as the brakes are superb. Targa top is okay - not totally watertight but near as - rattles a bit now and then so is better when it's off !!

£15k sounds max for a private sale good 'un.
