PSE question

I'm interested to know from those who had the PSE from new or upgraded later....do you all find it great fun...or is it occasionally a little too noisey and ...well....annoying.

I am asking as I knew nothing about this exhaust and was genuinely surprised that Porsche offer it as an option..( and not standard..if it is so good) .I guess what I am trying to ask is...does it make the car sound/seem daft..or is it a genuine must have for total enjoyment

I had a PSE fitted to my 993 back in 1995, and it was tedious at times with a mid-range 'boom' at motorway speeds. My OPC agreed and replaced my original FOC.

Had the PSE fitted to my 996 (3.6) a couple of years ago, without the switch. Absolutely no problems, always sounds lovely and never intrusive. IMO the most essential option you can have on a 996. Mind you, the heated seats have run it a close second this winter[;)]

This option is probably one of the most discussed threads on this site and is generally regarded as a "must have" option. I upgraded and fitted the system myself and todate have never switched it off. They should come out of the factory sounding like this but the option is a moneyspinner for Porsche.....wouldn't have a car without PSE...simple as that!

I agree - wouldn't be without my exhaust! Got a lot of comments from people about 'spending money to make my car louder' though. I tried to explain but .. ah well :)

Thanks chaps....but hold on...Jonnot, do you mean that it can be switched off for "silent running"....sounds like a win-win option then, can you clarify this for me guys...

Thanks

When factory fitted it has an on/off switch. Often when retro fitted (like mine) it doesnt because its incredibly expensive to fit all the wiring etc. I'd never turn it off anyway!

Best thing is to have it fitted without a switch and then, if you really think you need a switch, have it retro-fitted. Cost is c.£300. In all the time I had PSE I would never have switched it off.

Hi Oliver,

As you know, I'm about to take the plunge and fit one too.

This option to fit without the switch would save me sooo much money, but what is it like with the PSE on the motorway when travelling and a constant 50 - 70 mph?
Does it drone?...is it louder than standard?

Thanks in advance,

Hassan,

I recently sold my 996 (3.6) C2, which I had owned for over two years with an OPC fitted PSE.

For road use, I don't like loud, noisy cars, but I really liked the PSE. It is a very clever system that can be controlled by the right foot. Open the throttle gently, or throttle back to a cruising speed (70-80ish on the m.way) and it just makes a nice warm, purposeful background noise, not at all tedious. But open the throttle quickly or during firm acceleration and it sounds gorgeous, like a Ferrari V8.

It really should have been standard fit on the 996.

I agree with Oliver totally!

If you are cruising under 95-100 it isn't intrusive. If you use your right foot judiciously thay are not much lounder than standard.

BUT......

I have been pulled by the law twice this year just because the damn car sounds so loud (and so sweet - reckon they're just jealous) under full acceleration!!!! Wouldn't have it any other way [:D]

Hi Ian/Oliver,

I've thrown caution to the wind and believe that £1750 inc VAT is an excellent deal for a PSE with switch. Kieron at OPC Cambridge has been very helpful, as they are loaning me a Cayenne too.

Can't wait now [:)]

(Apparently they don't fit the PSE without switch onto a 2000 car anymore)

Not sure if it the same as my 997S, but under the engine cover, there is a block connector that links the PSE actuators.

A simple disconnect leaves the exhaust "LOUD" right across the rev range - simple.

Hasan

My pse switch has stopped working, and the silence between 27mph and 40Mph is no longer silent which i prefer, the car is going back to my OPC in a couple of weeks to have it sorted but i am going to ask them to fix it and see if they can leave it on loud all the time apart from when i press the switch, i shall let you know what the out come is.

I would also like to add that the PSE is a great, my girlfriend who is not a car lover even things it sounds great.

Phil

It does sound lovely doesn't it Phillippe?

Yes, let me know what they say/do....would be very interested to see what they say

Hi Hasan,

Dont want to appear rude, but how much does PSE cost as I'm thinking of getting one myself.

Phil

Hi Phil,

That's not a rude question at all, it cost me £1,747 from OPC Cambridge with the switch.

There are cheaper routes...ie: Tubi...but I have a Porsche extended warranty and I wanted the option of switching it off on motorway journeys.....

Buy one, you won't regret it

My mechanic took 30 mins to follow the renntech link instructions! Works perfectly, on is on and off is off!!

I don't know about anyone else but my exhaust is so loud, it measured over 110 dec. on my noise metre....are all PSE this loud?
