Query from far, far away

Hello All,

I have recently moved to Dubai and am imminently to hurtle into Boxster ownership. I have a query that I'm not sure anyone can help with (I have tried to find a decent forum here without success ) so I thought I'd give home a try.
Does anyone know (or know someone who might) if Porsche UAE are in the habit of discounting on Boxsters??

I know it's unlikely, but any confirmation either way would help before the bartering begins.

Thanks,

Steve (getting a bit excited) Jones

I don't know about discounting, but when I worked in Abu Dhabi 2000 to 2002 Porsche prices were cheaper than UK. Then again where isn't?

I have a mate in Dubai who works for Rank Xerox as a sales representative and the one thing he said he liked about his job was unlike UK everyone pays the asking price; not sure if that applies to cars too. And you are at the buying end, so this doesn't help but I think the best way to know is just ask. If they don't discount then get them to drop in some options you want for free...

I don't know about UAE, it's a different culture over there - systems of back hander's etc, but I've just ordered a new Boxster S from UK dealer and I was told that Porsche dealers do not give discounts - because there are such long waiting lists - you know the laws of supply and demand etc. I have had to wait 4 and a half months for my build slot at the factory - but it will be worth it - as I get the upgraded 3.4 for a September build - Fastest Boxster ever! (apparently, there is a 2 year waiting list for a 911 Turbo!)

Good luck

Nigel

Thanks gents, I suppose I'll just have to politely enquire about a discount. Delivery is 5 months, so it doesn't look promising, I'll see what I can do with options.
On the bright side, Geoff is right about the prices here. I'll not tell you how much cheaper, you might get upset....

Thanks for your help

Steve

OK then, spec below (on standard Boxster)

Metallic paint
Tiptronic S (Dubai traffic a nightmare)
Sports seats
Park assist
Bi-xenons
19 inch Carrera wheels
Bose surround sound / wind deflector

All for the princely sum of 193400 AED, or at the current exchange rate..........28219.40 of your English pounds and pence.

Well you did ask...

Steve

Yeah coz in UAE they get paid much more than the equivalent position in the UK or Ireland - with next to no taxes....

Oh, I'm sure I'm all wrong on that one [;)]

...but you have to put up with the harsh desert weather with the climate control on all the time and with fuel prices close to water prices, it is a hard life... oh and the balance between UAE and UK price is set aside in the bank just in case you hit a camel.

Yup, it's a hard life [;)]

It all makes the Boxster price even more attractive and highlights how we all get well and truly shafted back in the UK.

As for the camels, thankfully my daily drive down Sheikh Zayhed Road is generally camel free, I think the humidity keeps them away.

How much would a similar spec to my choice cost back in the UK??

To drive the car of your choice in the country of your choice you pay the going rate. You pay a lot less for a car in the States and get a 4 year warranty but unless I'm going to up sticks and live there what's the point in getting narked about it.

I also think you'll find that a UK Boxster is by no means the dearest.

Yes, they are more pricey in India because of the100% luxury tax on all performance cars and in Aus & S. Africa (I think) there is some similar tax which makes it more expensive than UK...

Yup... look at the spec below on my sig and wonder in amazement at the 110k euro price tag new.....

And thats leaving aside the 1350 euro road tax per annum... and 2000 euro for insurance in mid 30's with full no claims and no points....

Hi Steve,
From what I could see from our suite atop the Dusit Dubai there isn't room for camels on Sheikh Zahed Road, unless that is they come out between midnight and 6.00am. To visit Porsche Centre Dubai across the road from the hotel we had to use a taxi!!
You will be aware that it is Cayenne Turbos that are the flavour of the moment, in excess of 800 units in 12 months as I understand. Go on, really annoy us and let us know what they cost. As a contrast have some thought for the guys in Singapore who pay almost twice what we pay in the U.K. for their Porsche pleasures.
I hope you have made contact with the Porsche Club UAE. Jacqui and I were hosted by President Karim Al-Azhari and his beautiful wife back in February. His aims for the Club are high, and he told of his escapades with his Radical at the Autodrome. If you get the chance, please give him our best. Enjoy your time out in Dubai.

The Dusit, eh? very nice. We had dinner in PAX a few weeks back, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
I did try the UAE club web-site and have so far had......0 responses. It sounds (and looks) like it is in it's early days, but I will definitely look into it.

There are indeed numerous Cayennes flying about. I have seen a couple of Gemballa versions also, which look fantastic / vulgar depending on your viewpoint. A quick look on the web-site shows the base Turbo price of 361800 AED which is 54 grand exactly.

I am going to the Autodrome in a couple of weeks to cane the life out of an Impreza Turbo around there. I hear the circuit is supposed to be excellent and I'm looking forward to it.

I assume you're on holiday, if so enjoy the rest of your time here, hope you're not missing the car too much.

Steve

You paid nearly £75,000 for a Boxster S? []

Well I didnt... but someone else did.... I paid 72,000 euro for it when it was 2 years old.

But if you want a bigger laugh - the starting price for the new 997 turbo over here is 240,000 euro.

So what would stop us from putting our car on a ferry and coming across and doing a private sell? A 2 years old Boxster S would go for some 43,000 euro over here(probably even less)...
