Question from a newbie

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this but hay ho, I have just started retoring a 1979 928, it was am impluse buy and I have probably bitten of more than I can chew as boats are more my thing. I though I'd start on what I thought would be the easy bit, thats the interior my plan was to strip the inside to give it a real good clean but staright away I've hit a problem - how do I get the front seats out!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi :)

You really need the workshop manual....pdf files on cd are around on the net...:)

Your question though..the answer is...move the seats FULLY back on the controls...then undo the front bolts.....then all the way forward and undo the rear bolts.....dont forget that if the seats are electric to disconnect the wiring connector :)

Any more questions, just ask...either myself or Adrian Clarke (PCGB 928 Tech advisor) will happily answer you.

All the best Brett :)

Hi thanks for that, i should of said that I have the engine out of the car so I cant move the seats unless you can do it manually! I hope I dont get people to fed up with my stupid questions!!! I always wanted a 928 and buying it in a mess was the only way I could get one!
A bit more info, the body work is sweet as a nut, but the engine is out with the heads and valve /rocker covers off, its a 1979n manual, I'm thinking I might be better of just buying a replacement engine and sticking it in, at least that way I might hear it running!!!
Cheers
Dan

Hi :)

Never had my seats out but from other posts, I am pretty sure there is a nut you can turn to manually move them forward and back.....or take the electrical connector apart and feed power from any battery beside the car to the correct wires...and earth back to battery as well....if you are worried about getting the wrong wires...put a 10 amp fuse in the live wire from the battery...

Why are the heads off ??? were they off when you bought the car..if so its not a good sign........??????

All the best Brett :)

The heads where of when I brought the car. The story goes that the bloke (previous) to who I brought it from ran out of money to pay a garage bill so they kept the heads and never re-fitted the engine after they basically re-built a new one from 2 old ones!!!! I have got loads of receipts for it, the work was carried out by Autostrasse (Essex) and came to 3032.24, I know the car was run in 2002 as I have the old MOT but suspect it not been since. The body work on it is sweet as a nut although inside it looks its age!
I was going to try and source a couple of heads, whack em on and stick it back in to try it but it seems that I can buy a secondhand engine for almost the same money as the heads - any suggestions apprichiated!

Hi Dan :)

I am looking into finding you some heads and will post back here within 24 hours where you can get some....I think I know of 2 sets...will let you know....

All the best Brett :)

Hi Dan :)

Paul Anderson has a pair of heads..with cam carriers, cams etc....at £120 each bank or can assemble them onto your engine if you ship your engine to him....or rebuild your engine complete or even put it in the car if you ship the car to him....

Email addy for him is ...porschespares@blueyonder.co.uk

All the best Brett :)

Ideal, I'll drop him an email, I quite like the idea of him putting it all back togther, where is he based? I'm in Plymouth but distance is no major problem.......I brought the car from Falkirk!

Hi :)

All the best Brett :)

Yep that the one. I'd love to get it running, watched a film called the business and that was it ( i know its not the same model) but I had to have one!! Blimey, bit more to this restoration thing to what I thought, next time someone says just stick the heads on I might not belive them!!
Thanks again

Hi :)

You are welcome to our help...928ers tend to stick together :)

You realise that those heads MUST have cam carriers and cams on them ???

But when its all finished and that huge V8 rumbles into life it will all be worth it :)

I use my S2 as my daily driver and when it rumbles into life every morning....I just smile [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

To true
Well, today I drove my 928 for the first time ever!!! Not finished (need to sort out electrics for MOT) but a step closer, and onl;y round a yard, I aklready love it!!!! Just wanted to check all gears (yep, its a manual) and clutch where in order after engine change and its all good. Next step is out of storage yard and home on drive for some prime time tinkering time. Its been a fair slog but at last starting to make real progress, once through the MOT I need to put a new interior in. Will one of the later models front seats fit in (the current ones are all electrics) and how much would I be looking at for a leather set?
Cheers
Dan

Hi :)
Great to hear you got it running :) Very well done :)

All the seats from all later models will fit yours although you may have do some extra wiring.

Interiors . you can get on Ebay or one of the breakers, BUT make sure you look at drivers seat bolster (where your right hip is if sat in seat) THEY ALWAYS WEAR THROUGH BADLY.

Most cars for sale "accidentally" miss taking a photo there lol...

For a Full Interior including back seats ,door cards, and all other bits. anything from £100 to £300 to £400 generally, depending on condition.

Buy the best you can afford as you dont want to spend hundreds having the seats recovered afterwards :(

Hope this helps :)

All the best Brett :)

Congrats gashead, must be a great feeling to finally have it on the road again! Keeping an eye out myself at the moment...

Was that the sky blue one that was on Ebay a couple of times? Any pics?

Yeah, I brought it through ebay last year, as for pics I'm get some over the weekend, outside its pretty good, inside its not!

Glad to see it went to someone who put it back on the road. I think I'd rather buy a car that needs the interior tidied as compared to the outside. Look forward to the pics.
