R15 Facebook closed group

Alan,
I have just checked out the Goodrich event details on the SW Events page and clicking on "Facebook" button takes me to the Club's national page, which is logical as it is about Connecting with the Club but a tad confusing with the SW Facebook presence.

Ralph

It appears as a closed group to me Alan.
Some of the groups I'm on are actually set to secret so they can't be searched for and you get less idiots joining, however I can see that's not exactly what the PCGB pages are about, as I guess they're trying to achieve more communication and interaction with members.

A lot of the forum I'm on have suffered massively from FB, very much splitting the groups from being one club into separate regional groups that have a distinct lack of community, apart from within that group.

However, I've joined groups for holiday trips and found it really easy to post and communicate whilst on the trip and from using my phone.
I can see why people don't want to join FB, but I also know enough people who don't actually use their real names and details in order to join and get involved with the groups.

R16 has a closed facebook account, been going for a couple of years now.
It was started for the same reasons as above and we have a couple of basic questions, before I let them join I become a bit of a troll and check out their profile to see if they are genuine. We do get requests from non members but Porsche owners and usually they are allowed in but if their profile is private with only a couple of friends then they are blocked. (unless I know they are members)
Some regions have open accounts which I think is a bit irresponsible, just imagine telling the world that a group of Porsche's will be parked up somewhere with the owners off down the cafe.

As for members moaning about missing out we just tell them to join facebook or read their emails as it is all the same info, unfortunately this forum is a bit clunky and difficult to post pics, it even annoyed me just now that I had to log in and remember my password.

I did put my foot down with the twitter account and that is not happening but I should use this forum more for our region, even if people dont go on it you get an email if you are subscribed to a region or register, hence the reply to this thread.

At the end of the day the RO`s are only doing what the members want.

Cheers Stuart

This is not aimed at detracting from or substituting the forum but a significant number of members have said they don't like using the forum for a variety of reasons and would like an alternative.

But it does, doesn't it?
You know I've been banging on for ages about declining forum use and lack of any positive steps by our Club to improve or promote it.
So how is setting up yet another avenue of communication just because a few ask for it going to help?
Isn't the answer to make the forum more accessible, easier to use and let people know it's there.
Even the enlightened R15 region fails to mention it in its PP column!

Clive

Thats not exactly true Clive
I remember reading somewhere from the R15 RO`s that a new years resolution was to use the forum more in 2019 and I thought we should too.
Any one can post on the forum its not down to the RO`s and yes we do have to take on board what the members want.
You do have a good point regarding the club making the forum more usable though.

Stuart

We have mentioned the forum in several, if not all, of recent PP pieces and in every Mailchimp - and at every meeting. I would be most surprised if members are unaware of its existence.
Improving forum useability is not in my gift, sadly. I have put most of the events on here too. How many posts do they get?
Frankly, this is taking up an inordinate amount of my time when I need to be planning Region events, such as the WOTY.
As I said before, more members have shown interest in joining the FB group in one day than have posted on the forum in years in the R15 section.

Stuart,
If some Board members have their way, "Guests of the Club" will have only a few limited posts on this forum, making it an even more unwelcoming platform.
Maybe you should have your status changed just in case! [;)]

Clive

The Facebook page now has (only) 15 Members and there is more content on there in 10 days than the Forum gets in 6 months. It's purely an easier more social way of communicating and sharing information, pictures etc.

Bits will appear here and be duplicated on Facebook, but these will be event notifications and meet information, as is here already, whereas all the fun stuff and photos will be on Facebook.
I really cannot understand the reluctance of going on Facebook? But I do understand you have a choice and if that choice means you miss out then hey, That's your choice.

I have mentioned it before and here is the probleem, how can an RO be a guest of the club.
Obviously the membership status is not being looked into and I wonder how many people are on the forum that are not members anymore.

I agree the FB page is fantastic. Thanks Alan for setting his up and for taking the time to administrate the page. I personally very rarely use the Forum and don't bother posting photos as I still struggle doing so.

I am also a member of other clubs, including those with older members such as for my 1949 MG TC, and the FB pages are lively and well used.

As you say, if you want to use Twitter, flicker etc you have to sign up, and I fear the same applies with FB.

Alan,
In my view the closed FB group plus you vetting individual requests from other club members is all we need.
Trying to set it up with different pages which are accessible by different people is too complicated and too much work for you (and Keith?)

This appears to contradict Alan's assertion that everything on FB will be available elsewhere, then! It confirms some FB content will not be available to all R15 members and thus a clique is being formed.

Equally, I cannot really understand the reluctance of those who chose not to use the forum, which after all, is the established platform for all matters PCGB and to which all R15 members already have access.

Clive
it has already been mentioned the forum is not easy to use (compared to modern platforms) there is no obvious way to take a photo and instantly share it and I don’t believe it is the platform for all matters PCGB.
It certainly used to be but those days are gone and the forum, sadly, has been left in behind.
The fun stuff mentioned above will be the banter between members as they post pics and comment, this can go on for days after a good event and almost impossible for anyone to copy and paste on here.
I do have a question, who is creating a clique if they refuse to join in.

What I said was

"As far as I'm concerned there won't be anything happening in my Region that is only promulgated via FB."

Thus any meetings or ad hoc gatherings will be repeated elsewhere to avoid any suggestions of cliqueyness. Clearly every photo, conversation and comment made on FB is not going to be copied and pasted.

Like it or not the forum does not meet the needs for all inter member communication, especially among the newer ones or those already using media such as FB for other purposes. The use of smart phones in particular, I believe is leading this. If someone posts in the FB group you get an instant notification that has happened, if you so choose. Rather better than the subscription service on the Forum (when it's working!) As I said in an earlier post this is the instant gratification that FB offers and the forum doesn't.

And I just have add this- because it's really funny,....

Alan, you're right that was a really funny video - but it makes me even more dubious about getting a facebook account :-(

I did look into registering for facebook but what put me off was them insisting that I use my real name and date of birth so that they can target me with the right 'experience' and enable other people to find me.

I'm pretty certain you can remain" off the radar" by making the correct privacy settings. Within the closed group there are no adverts and such. I'm certainly no expert on this but maybe someone who us can comment?

I believe many of us who do have no wish to sign up to Facebook, are concerned about the several high profile privacy lapses over the past couple of years. Facebook is actually in breach of an agreement with FTC promising to protect their users' privacy.

And for that reason, I'm out!
Regards,

Clive
