Race car shell

I know you guys love looking at pictures so Kevin Eacock (EMC) took a few for me the other day, I have reduced 2 of em for the net to show you guys. I have to say I am getting really excited now, the body shell will be making its short journey down to Northampton from Brum on Saturday. Hopefully by the end of the month the car will be fully built and running. Maritime blue was definitely definitely the right choice, it just looks wonderful in my eyes. Enjoy!

Looks great Neil - just like a large scale (erm, well 1/1 scale [:D]) Tamiya kit waiting for you to get the bits bolted together.

Nope, this is how my brother sees it as well, so far no real problems other then removing the drivers side front wing but it was rotten anyway so it came of the easy way [:D]. He has done this sort of thing a few times on pure road cars which of course are much more work because all the trim has to go back in and look perfect. Seeing the car in pieces it really doesn't look at all bad just very very time consuming doing it all. So far my brother has put in about 50 hours and I did about 30 or so but I am slower then a real mechanic, I will have to ask him what it ended up for the complete strip down as he has a couple of things left to do this week. You are 100% right though about it being like a kit as things like the engine and rear suspension all come out and go back in again complete.
 
Do I see a hole in the cills to adjust the torsion bars so you don't have to drop the rear beam?

Oh yes, and what you can't see in those pictures is all the correct harness mounts and the holes in the rear seat bins for passing through the shock reservoirs to mount them in the rear seat location. Basically, everything you need in the shell to build a race car.

However not wishing to detract anything from it in any way whatsoever as I am sure they have vast experience and tried and tested shells out there but I am intrigued and have to admit I dont understand why they didnt brace the roll cage to the front turrets through the bulkhead. A top and bottom strut brace then squares it all up. It ensures any lack of flex or movement from the shell stiffening is not exagerated in the front which can crack structural members from fatigue.

I am surprised but you`re probably right or I`m sure they would have done it. Cant see why its not allowed as its also a safety aspect (helps stop wheels backing into the footwells) however the original Porsche design is obviously clearly pretty good and inherently strong [:)]

I only mentioned it in genuine surprise as I have a non sunroof car and as soon as I fitted KW and W/M ARB`s a screen chip turned into a two inch crack within 50 miles so I know they do flex at the front when stiffened up (or certainly transfer flex differently) and Porsche strengthened the front for the turbo`s IIRC. I`d be interested to see if they (EMC) added strengthening or triangulation and seam welding.

Further to the above replies, by bracing to the strut towers you increase the bodys strength greatly. The downside is that this is at the expense of the vehicles designed-in ability to absorb impacts (and you bring the 'impact' into the cabin through the triangulation - its a compromise between spreading the suspension loads and dealing with an impact). This is why you dont seam weld the front chassis rails either (even when you flout the rules and seam weld eveything else...).

I was bouncing of the walls when I received the pictures the other night, I had seen the raw shell the other week after it came back from the dip, but now it is starting to look like a race car. I haven't been this excited since I first bought a Porsche, my only regret is that I didn't do this 4 or 5 years ago, wouldn't have been able to do anything with the car after wards but the project would have been worth it.
