Race car shell

Looking great, love the colour. What does the naked shell weigh? I guess since you weighed everything as you removed it you can probably estimate final weight?

At the moment I estimate about 1150 Kg without fuel, this is with the doors complete as is. I have decided I want to go with the doors complete (as wiring is on a plug it can be removed easilly anyway), get the car corner weighted and setup properly then think again about what and when should be done next. I will have both a fibreglass badge/headlight panel and the stock panels and headlights. Both to be painted, I will probably start with the headlights fitted as then I don't have to worry about driving in the dusk.

I will look into either measuring or calculating my own shell weight figures, but these are heavy cars and a lot of the weight of the car in stock trim is in the body shell.

Guys a few more pictures that really do the shell justice, we quite literally carried it into our garage on Saturday, myself, my brother, Kev and his son Ben.

This first pic I think shows what a lovely shine fresh paint gives, maritime is such a wonderful colour, Kev has done a great job all things considered given that this is basic painting rather then final finish in the booth, oven.

In this image one can see the cage in its glory and of course the holes through which the shock reservoirs are put.

Finally a picture from the front, what is really nice about this is its all evenly painted whereas when you remove panels and trim on the stock shell it frankly looks a bit of a mess in many places.

Thanks guys, we are hoping to have the car fully usable by July.

Thanks for the comments guys. Barry has been making fantastic progress, he has cleaned or renovated everything going back on the car. As you can see he has painted the brake servo.

Next up detail on the scuttle area, don't remember what that connector is for though.

In case you haven't seen one this is the charcoal canister

This is what factory lines look like after about 2 or 3 years and a few thousand miles on a car, it would have been nicer to replace with brand new but as you can see these lines are *almost* like new.

The wiring loom and heater is in

also in this one you can see the peddle assembly is in, and greased up nice and smooth. The ABS computer is in, ready to fit the dash now and instruments. The floor plates and passenger foot rest are just sat in the car as I brought them with me today so Barry hasn't had chance to fit them properly yet.

Lastly a picture of Barry doing something in the car

He has found an interesting way of getting out of a race car [:D]

Looking great Neil!

Do you have to keep the charcoal canister to meet race regulations? It's on my list to remove when I have a moment.

Looking fantastic Neil - I'm deeply jealous!

Can't wait to see the final outcome. What do you estimate the final 'wet' weight to be?

I cant imagine that youll need the charcoal canister..... Not all vehicles were so equipped after all.

Simon

Final weight should be around 1150kg to 1160 Kg. There is a list of things I can still do to remove more weight if required but I am only about 65 Kg so the plan is to build up the car now then get it corner weighted and take things from there. After talking to Barry I would adjust our hours count though up to more like 200 hours total. It was clear to both of us during the rebuild that it would a real shame to put dirty rusty parts back on the car, a little bit of dirt don't matter as it will get dirty anyway. Many wouldn't bother with the torque tube or torsion bar carrier but Barry is adamant about cleaning and painting it all up. The only thing he hasn't attacked is the ABS pump.

Something you can't see in the pictures is the bench grinder. I bought some steel wire wheels for that and to put on the drill, they do a brilliant job cleaning up just about anything under the car that gets exposed.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I will keep taking pictures every week and posting em up.
