Hi I am looking in to the possibility of a 924S as a race car for the Classic Sports Car Club's "Future Classics" Series ( see here: http://www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk/FutureClassics.htm, basically a series of 40 min mini-enduro races for 1 or 2 drivers with a compulsory pit stop). I was thinking that the 924S such as this one: http://www.racecarsdirect.com/viewlisting.php?view=16201 might be suitable for the 2 litre to 3 litre class. There are already a couple of 944s racing in the series but I thought that the 924S might be a bit lighter (as well as cheaper). Anyone got any views on this, anyone know how to extract a bit more power from a 924S engine?

924s are 150bhp for the earlier models 85-7, and a 160bhp for the 88 model. However its easy to get that 10bhp back from the earlier models. The 924 in the link , looks like it has under gone a number of mods. The wheels look bigger than the standard 15inch teledial fitted to the "S", they look like 16inch 944 turbo teledials?, the rear wing is also from a 944, its much larger than the standard. I love the 924S, but to my mind i dont see the reason for choosing one over a 944 fro track use? As the weight on both cars, once stripped and race ready would be about the same? Plus 944 can be as cheap to buy as 924s at the moment. Just an observation.

I imagine that Part of the Fun Is preparing it Oneself and at ÂŁ1200 You have Plenty of Cash to Prepare it..Plus 5ths Tax and 4 mths MOT!
Must admit that I don't find preparing the car much fun at all - much easier, and usually much cheaper to buy one that has already been prepared. As a rule of thumb, race cars are never worth what they cost to build, unless someone VERY famous has raced them!

Usually Just Lighten it With Grp wings, bonnet Etc..Rear Seat out All the dead weight From Electric window,mirrors Etc.. Air Filter and Exhaust?

There are new wings out there, a good bodyshop in Nottingham can correct any imperfections and get the wing fitted.
Nows the time to get one sorted, light evenings and lots of events are happening.

You need a different rear cross-member & the later (plastic) tank. You need a 968 drivetrain that hasn't been thrashed, and you need all the anciliaries: 968 run an oil cooler, so the readiator has to move, etc etc.
My 924S is heavily modified for use on track, with Recaro seats (amazing how much weight they save!) a KW v3 suspension, Turbo ARBs, better 4 pot brakes all round, the plastic tank, lightweight parts etc.
So far I have left the drivetrain well alone, but I suspect my next steps will be a 944 Turbo gearbox, a Guard LSD, and then an S2 3 Liter.

PCGB Member. Just bought a '87 924 S plan to use it for track days and sprints. Any suggestions on road tyres sizes and make, plus wheel types and suitable tyres for track days etc. Someone mentioned Dunlop formula "R"s all comments appreciated. Plan to upgrade suspension and brakes, but initially will keep car looking standard. Perhaps a roll cage rear half might be necessary!!

For the road, I run 195/55x15 up front, 205/55x16 on the rear. For track, I find either 205/55x16 or fr 205/55/16 and r 225/50x16 works best. Haven't fitted anything more exotic on track than Toyos, which seem to work very well.
Wheels, well I have been extravagant, and I've collected a few Fuchs wheels that fit. Rears are 16x6 ET36, fronts are 15" with a high offset. Stupidly expensive (from a 911r, I belive), but they're 11 Kg WITH the tyre (the standard 15x6 teledial the 924s came with is 7 Kg without (!), and make a massive difference to unsprung weight and transient handling.

Re my request for ideas on wheels/tyre combinations for my 924S. Thanks Tam Lin what type of events do you use the car for? I wondered whether Dunlop formula R tyres would be suitable for track days, recently a 924S was for sale with them, the owner thought they were v.good. Will suss Toyo tyres first. Cheers Ken

I also wonder how difficult (expensive) it would be to buy a 924S and fit a 968 engine and gearbox - I understand that Simon Butterworth (Porsche-Apart???) did that in his 924 for hillclimbing and sprinting.
He did indeed.... its now parked in my garage....
There are a 'lot' of comprimises made with the car and some things that were changed quick sharp because they were plain wrong....
But all in all.... its a balastic missile!
Hi Am working on a 924S prepping it for trackdays. Plan to keep interior vitually as is but want to fit a roll cage. Has anyone any knowledge of our type of cars with a roll hoop just behind the front seats and two angled supports bolted to the wheel arches. It seems when any one fits a cage they rip out all the interior which is not on my agenda. Am looking at a company called Roll Centre who make FIA National spec cages rgds Ken PS Do sprint regs make mention of sun roofs??
