Rear seats in 964 RS

tat

New member
Hi,

Were rear seats and belts ever an option on the 964RS? Or is it possible to have them fitted?

I'm sure there was a red 964RS at the Brands display which had rear seats.

Thanks,
tat

Not in the normal lightweight or clubsport models. The comfort ones could be specced with normal seats IIRC, but not sure that included the rears???

There are a few C2 replicas out there, could be one of them perhaps.

I suppose it would be possible to put rear seats in a lightweight bucketed RS in theory, but you would probably end up buggering around with the rear carpet (tarnishing originality) and there would be very little rear access because of the bucket seats. It would certainly be illegal for anyone to be in them when the car is in motion because of safety concerns re getting out in a crash.

Besides, anyone committing such an act of sacrilege would be immediately covered in milk and white bread and left tied up for the badgers. [;)]

Hi there is a red one flying around in Kent that was apparently built for one of the Top Bananas at Porsche at the time.

The passenger seat is a standard recliner re-trimmed in triple red/grey?

Presumably it was type approved like this when new.

I posted the same question re GT-3 some time ago and was shot down in flames with suggestions such as "Buy a Turbo" Sometimes people can miss the point...

hi tat , the red 964 in the display was not a real RS, so lets rule that option out. My car was in same display both days ( black with full cage). There was at least 1 RHD 3.2 clubsport with kiddy seats installed, but track oriented cars are normally constructed to be cage compliant , ruling out access to rear seats.

The red car that was there on Monday was not an RS, looked like a C2 used for track days or racing and featuring many RS alike parts.

Rear seats were an option on the 3.2 Club Sport, I went to view a car earlier this year that was ordered from the factory as such. Not many of these about as far as I am aware - the car that I saw is for sale in Porsche Post if anyone is interested.

Regards

Nevertheless there is an 964RS that arrives at our regional meets....I doubted its validity but was assured it was the real thing as I said.

I am asuming that it is not the same car that was at Brands?

Lee the red RS you speak of has what is basically a 959 passenger seat. I can't remember if it was spec'ed from new that way or not, the story is that the original owners wife would not go in the car without the more comfy passenger seat! The RS rear panel in theory has no rear seat mounting points which rules out "easy" fittment of such seats . That's not to say it can't be done (as nothing is impossible) just that it could be costly. A touring model with front recliners fitted would be the best base for such a conversion.

Oh and NO as far as I'm aware rear seats and belts were NEVER an option officially. What was or was'nt done at werk 1 however......... who knows.

First post here - but been lurking for a while....

My RS originally came with the back rest section only of the rear seats + rear seat belts.

I have since removed the rear seat sections and belts (still have them) due to fitting a full cage.

Could my car therefore be unique as rear seats where never an option?? (I'll post the option codes for my car later)

Interesting please tell us more Paulc....

The red 964RS on Display with rear seats WAS A REAL 964RS as far as I am aware the only one to date but Paul may give us more info...As others have posted above the car was built for Herr Big Direktor Der Porsche and has an original 959 passenger seat and C2 rear seats, I nearly put him in the field when he arrived at Brands as a joke...however there was a second red car (Monday) that appeared on the Display in Porsche Open livery was this a 964RS/Cup Car? Did not have much time to closely inspect the car, there were several good copies that turned up at the Main Gate many people investing huge amounts in body and interior replica kits, IN THE FIELD MATEY! But top marks for trying........[]

OK a few more details....

Car is a LHD 1993 lightweight RS German car.

The rear seats consisted of just the back rests (which fold down) + the seat belts. Front seats are the standard RS leather recaros'.

IIRC - There is also a yellow LHD RS which also had these kind of rear seats originally (also now removed due to cage fitment).

Option codes will be posted later today....

I was at Nick Faures about 6 years ago to look at a Silver 964rs that had come from Jersey. I got into a conversation about a yellow 993rs that he had just sold but the new owner insisted that he wanted rear seats fitted before he took delivery. Nick showed me the bill which came to £3500.00!

The yellow 993RS mentioned was in the hands of one of the autocar journalist Frankel brothers...it did have the rear seats fitted, but also had the comfort seat recliners on both sides. I understand the current owner has installed the leather recaro buckets.

The softer 993RS was available in any bespoke interior fit out you wanted.........[] You will find that you set out with best intentions for the family and convince the other half that this can be done but in practice completely impractical..........IT IS A TWO SEATER[;)]

Interesting if the car came like this from the factory. The rear panel on all RS's are modified so that the seat fixings and belt points are ommited. That said it's not too difficult to change. And certain mounting points are still there anyway. As I said before anything is possible at Porsche if you are in the know[;)]

Looking at my handbook the only option code I have is '13741'. I'm assuming option codes are listed in section 6.

A quick look at a couple of option decoders didn't establish what the description for this option code is.

Tat -that wasn't an RS -cheeky b*stard!!

He also had the efrontery to ring me up a while ago asking for my sign man's details so he could get a set of decals run up -after all that work sourcing the originals and doing the art work, you have GOT to be joking.....

hi Mel thanks for the invite onto the tarmac parking at brands,it was nice to meet you , i was hoping to compete but could only manage down on the monday..just to clear up a couple of points
1 my parents are married
2 i rang to buy some stickers after reading your offer to sell sets...porsche post march 2004 page 89 (think before you type???)
3 my car has no back seats so it must be another car..
anyway we are drifting off tats question about rear seats, there is an article in sept 2004 porsche world about a club sport owner that has fitted rear belts , might be worth a look . to get access you would have to fit an ordinary 911 seat although you could look at the tilting frames that demon tweeks sell so you could keep the recaro in...hope to see you at Oulton and Donnington.

Hi Keith, great to see your car on display at Brands unfortunately we did not meet, what is the spec on your car, note it has Cup Car/C2 rear bumper is it an original Cup Car? Are you coming to JZ Machtech on the 9th October?[:)]

The other Red RS I was referring is an original factory four seater local Kent Member car.......

Hi,

Looks like I've started something here...didn't realise this is quite such an emotive subject for you RS pilots!!

I've just sold my 930, and am hoping to replace it with a 964RS. Being able to carry the wife and kids would make it much easier to justify, but I'll just have to think of a few more arguments!

It sounds like there are only a couple of cars in the country with rear seats, and the authenticity of these is highly doubtful.

Thanks for all the advice,

tat
