Does anyone know what size the rear speakers are on a 944 with the factory speaker upgrade (big round ones !!!) as i am putting some 4x6 JBL's in the front but fancied some bigger rears as i have the adaptors and extra grills already.

i am putting some 4x6 JBL's in the front

Are these a direct and easy fit and what is the JBL part/ model number?

A number of things have deteriorated whilst LIL was away and speaker paper is one of them [8|]

Have just put some JBL's in the front and yes they are both a direct and very easy fit. The model I got was GTO-6425E. Got them on ebay from a company called KSH Audio for ÂŁ41.98 inc VAT and postage.

Think they had several pairs and were on "buy it now" so no bidding required.

I have their website address and phone number etc if anyone wants it and/or doesn't use ebay.

There is someone selling brand new JBL 4x6 speakers on ebay for ÂŁ18.99,do a search for "jbl porsche" and you should find them,ive just bought a set for mine !!

Ive just recieved my jbl speakers off ebay and my old ones are currently selling for ÂŁ5 the pair at the moment

Hi Paul,
Got mine from Halfords, they are/were a stock item, ÂŁ40 ish, easy to fit and really nice sound, I only replaced the rears.

So what size were the rears .??
+ Were the replacements the JBL ones.?? Also what model no are they.. .
Im going to be "setting about" this job soon....

The ones i have just got off ebay were JBL 4x6 model number gto 6426e (120 watts). the only issue i can see with them is there's a spacer round the speaker so if you have the older speaker covers that screw direct on to the speaker they may not fit but the should be fine with the later type covers. I will let you know tomorrow when i fit them.

They should fit later 944's as they have a spacer on the speaker anyway,they wont fit with the earlier covers but i have just emailed the seller and he has told me that the spacer is only lightly stuck on and needs to removed for porsche fitment anyway !!

I have got Infinity Reference 6x4 on both front and rear and they sound much better compare to the older ones they replaced. For the front, I have to put some spacer (homemade one with metal nuts) between the grill and frame to avoid the tweeter touching the grill.

Speakers fitted today and very good in quality and sound,much better than originals and would recommend!!

I'm looking to replace the speakers in my 944 with something that sounds better. JBL and Infinity seem well recommended - any others? And is it easy to get 6" speakers in the rear (of a cabriolet)

George. I dont think youl be able to fit any 6" round speakers to your cab.. Theres only room for the 6/4" type....There aint any room as the roof mechanism takes up a lot of space....[:mad:][:mad:][:mad:].
Ide love to fit some better rears in mine .....Ive got some fairly bassy Magnat 6/4,s in mine....

Hi Dave, I thought that was the case too, but I've been looking at PET and there's a plan of the upgraded bits. The normal 6x4 speakers are part number 944 645 463 00, but on the upgraded plan, the part number is 944 645 425 00, and it looks round (unless the Cab specific bit isn't shown).

So, I'm stuck!

George,
I think the upgrade is only in the doors with 2 speakers in what is currently the pocket under the arm rest & tweeters up above the window switches.
I'm sure someone will correct me if there are other changes.

You can fit 6x9 speakers in the door of a cab. Don't waste your time with the 10 speaker setup as it still sounds rubbish. If I were doing it again I'd put something really good in the doors, possibly some 3 way components, utilising the extra depth you have over the coupe (because of the fixed quarterlight).

Hi Graeme. I'm not too sure - I've been nosing around in PET again, and the part numbers for the speakers are different between the normal 4 speaker setup and the upgraded 10 speaker setup:

[FONT=courier new"]Standard
Front: 944 645 451 00
Rear: 944 645 461 01 (Coupe)
Rear: 944 645 463 00 (Cabriolet)
[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=courier new"]Upgraded
Tweeter: 944 645 427 00
Mid Range: 944 645 419 00
Woofer: 944 645 425 00
Woofer: 944 645 429 00
Loudspeaker: 944 645 464 00

So it seems that it is a different speaker in the back, but I suppose it's possible that it is the same size but better quality if that's possible [;)].
Could be all academic though after Fen's post - if it still sounds rubbish, I'll go straight to plan 'B' whatever that is. It probably involves a pair of decent JBL or Infinity speakers.

Thanks for your help.
