Rear Tyres

Hey guys. Unfortunately I drove over a screw on sunday and now need to replace the tyres on the back, as the other one's tread was getting to the limit anyway. So, I've heard good things about the Falken FK-451 (now called the FK-452 I beleive) but also the more expensive Michelin Pilots that are on there at the moment. I've had a quote for the Michelins at £100 (fitted) but I see you can get the Falkens for about £60 delivered on the internet. Should I stick (no pun intended) with the Michelins or are the Falkens just as good? Or can you recommend any other good tyres? I want a good set, but dont want to spend a fortune. I know its a silly question, but I just cant decide. Need to make a decision soon as I cant stand driving around with the nasty spare wheel on! Cheers guys.

Also, what do the M0 and N2 etc mean in the tyre part number ?? And which is the right ones to go for ?

Nnnnoooooooooo not another N-rated tyre discussion!!!!!![][][][][][][]

What about Toyo Proxes?

Ok, no worries. I guess I'll just have to suck em and see. I'm gonna stick with the Michelins I think.

No, by all means discuss N ratings if you have something new, but please do a search first as it's been done to death and it's one of the least exciting topics to discuss repeatedly.

The old N rating debate [:D][:D][:D]...

Kumho Ecsta's are pretty good, think I have the KU31's on the front of my '44, seem to be reasonably hard wearing and offer excellent grip.

Cheers

Kumho Ecsta's are pretty good,

I have them running at 32 psi on my 951 and they are fine................so far............................compared to original S02`s they let go later/less under power out of a bend IMO BUT £100 for Pilots is good and I would go for them as I paid circa £60 ea for mine on the `net and a tenner each wheel for `Kwikfit` to fit and balance

re the Falkens, I tried to get some rears a few weeks back (245/45/16). Unfortunately I was told there are no more 451s and Falken are not making 452s in that size. I went for T1Rs in the end. No idea what they are like though as my car has been on axle stands in the garage for the last couple of months.

I just bought a set of Khumo Extas (spelling?) and I'm not in love with them. My experience with Toyo's has always been excellent and I bet you guys don't pay much for them. The Falkens are used over here by what I think you guys term as a 'Chav' ? They're regarded as cheap and nasty. The MPC's are long wearing and expensive and don't get to heat very quickly. I know it's for the road but I would think that in the UK grip is a factor when buying tyres?

Chaps,

I am bringing this thread back from beyond the grave as it seems relevant ... my S2 has one near-illegal tyre on the back (guess that is what comes of playing with sliding it off roundabouts), so I need a couple of replacements.

Currently it is running a set of continentals all round, which seem fine. But as I am new to the car (and RWD, and porsches, and lots of other things) I have no benchmark to know whether they are "good" or just "OK".

This site:

http://www.event-tyres.co.uk/quotation/results.php

Has a list of tyres in the correct size (225x50R16) - which do people recommend? Price is a factor, but I guess I would be stupid to pay for a Porsche and then skimp on the rubber.

Thanks for your help.

As an update. The day I get my car back I'm going to chuck the rotten Khumo's and get something like Toyo's or Bridgestones.

OK, well that's one definite 'avoid' for Kuhmo's ... thanks. Anyone else?

Another vote for the Toyo's here. The Contisports last longer but have less grip - I'd say almost half way between Fen's favourite the P6000 [;)] and a proper tyre [:D]

The Toyo's are a really good compromise for me - reasonable wear, good grip, good wet weather performance and progressive on limit.

I nearly went to the 888's the last time I changed, but based on a Darren at RPM's experiences I believe these are simply too soft for my kind of useage and whilst the extra grip must be fantasic I couldn't face changing them that often.

Best regards,
Peter

Ive just got hold if some pirelli pzero rosso tyres ,has anyone used these before and what did they think of them . Usually i go for continetal sport contact 2's but i fancied a change and these came up at the right price !!!

Surprisingly the Pirelli's don't seem to score so well in accordance with their price and reputation against other tyres in tests I've read. I've never heard anyone say much good about the Conti's either. I'm sure the Pirelli's will outperform the Conti's though.

Well just to turn that on its head...

My 964 came with Pirelli P Zero tyres on Boxster rims (the tyres were Porsche OE). They made a horrible "poing" noise over things like cats eyes or expansion joints. I spent some time on here searching for other 964 owners recommendations for tyres and it came back as Conti SportContact N2, so that's what I have. They seem fine so far and at least don't go "poing" all the time.

Of course a 964 isn't a 944 and my car is 4wd, so what's good for the C4 isn't necessarily good for the '44. Also tyres are a personal thing and that can affect a group. For example on here people tend to recommend Toyo or possibly Bridgestone. On 968UK where the model in question is basically the same car people recommend Goodyear F1, which I haven't seen championed on here and which my indie says are horrible on Porsches. There isn't even 100% consensus on the Pirelli P6000 and that just happens to be black and round but isn't even a tyre.

In fact I'd avoid any Pirelli products purely to boycott the company that spawned and continues to push the P6000.

Lol, I thought mentioning the P6000's might get a good response, nice one Fen!

Well I'll happily stand corrected re the Conti's.
Now as for the P6000's Fen, I suggest rather than standing, lie back and tell us all from the beggining how you came to your obsession re the Pirelli's. [:D][:D][:D]

To be fair I don't drive anywhere near the limits on the road so I haven't pushed the Contis on the 964. It did light up all four wheels when I gunned it away from the tyre fitters, but any brand new rubber with glaze still on the tread would have done that I'm sure.

I can't remember where my pathological hatred of the P6000 originated, but I dislike everything about them. The main gripe is that tyres should not normally be made of something with a lower wear rate than diamond.

I've got Kumho KU31's on the front on D90's and they were just as good as the Avon ZZ1's which they replaced.

However, I've finally taken the plunge and bought 18" wheels (Turbo Cup's !), I've upgraded to 968 castor mounts (as recommended) and am waiting for my new tyres to be delivered on Tuesday. What did I go for......Falken FK452's all round (225 40 18 front, 265 35 18 rear). I chose then Falken based on a few reasons:
The car only does about 3k a year, it will never see a track, It's a cab so is going to have a terrible ride on 18's anyway, they were very cheap but have very good reviews on tyretest.com.

I'll let you know if the reality is very different to my current expectations.......
