Rear wheel bearings

ORIGINAL: Shellman

Just paid £360 (less PCGB discount @ Porsche center -Chester) for new front nearside wheel bearing which went on a 2003 2.7 with 17000 on clock!

This is the only car of very many which has had to have a wheel bearing replaced - Porsche quality and workmanship. I think not.[]

30 quid a bearing at Porscheshop and your local garage can fit them for a fraction of the OPC price.

unfortunatly on boxster this is quite normal to find out which one thats at fault jack one side up on a flat with handbrake off spin the wheel that is jacked and grab the spring and in theory you should get no feedback from the spring but if its worn you will get a roughness feeling through the spring indicating faulty bearing..

hope this helps.

under 30k miles is widey reported as the start of bearing failures - big tyres, wide track don't help ! Lightly used cars that sit for months on end on one part of the bearing race suffer sooner !!

jack one of the rear corners up , spin the wheel and just grab the road spring what you can see between the wheel arch and wheel and you will either get a roughness or just nothing.. roughness means wheel bearing gone..

Might be the tyres instead. Certain patterns have been known to sound like a wheel bearing going when they get worn.

Mark, spot on. I called Porsche in Swindon who had a look for me yesterday. The previous owner had fitted Yokohamas which had worn on the inside edge. The pattern of the tyre had created an uneven surface which had caused this rumbling noise at speed. The car has now got 4 new Continentals on...no noise...perfect! ( apart from the cost!)
