Reduced Engine Power warning

Hi all

Hopped in my Turbo S this afternoon (not been driven since last week) and got a 'reduced engine power warning, driving permitted. please visit workshop'

Anyone experienced this and have any idea what it relates to? Its also told me start stop wasn't working. I'm 1250 miles in since new so a little concerned I've got an error already!

Oh and it’s also telling me stop start is not available

Hi Simon,

I would imagine that it’s ignition, fuel or maybe turbo related, although I’m not sure what the stop-start issue is. If you don’t have a misfire then perhaps it’s a low fuel pressure issue which could be due to a faulty high pressure fuel pump. If one of the turbos isn’t delivering full pressure that would lead to a loss of power.

The best way to find out what’s causing the problem is to run some diagnostics, so call it in to your local dealership.

I have a Turbo S too but not had that problem so would be very interested to hear the outcome.

My guess would be an out-of-range particulate filter reading. If it doesn't reset after switching off the ignition and continues in permanent limp mode, you will need to get it over to your PC either driven or by recovery. If you still have some power, try giving it a good run with a warm engine and high revs to see if clears.

I assume you are using premium fuel.

Good point re the particulate filter Clive, the potential pitfalls of which diesel car owners have been living with for some time, most notably if the car is used only for short runs and the filters don’t get up to temperature. A lesson to be learned no doubt! []

Waiting for the dealer to call me back to book it in. Its only ever been run on Optimax and had done a 100mile trip up the motorway last week but not been used since then until yesterday

Its running ok but down on power definitely. Warning is still persisting this morning so will see when I can get it booked in to be looked at

It sounds as though it’s more than just a "system clear-out” as Clive has suggested Simon, but you never know. It would be very disappointing if it’s a major component failure on such a new car, although it’s always a possibility.

There are multitude of system sensors, any one of which could be faulty, giving an erroneous reading and leading to the power being dialled-back to prevent component damage. The dealer will be able to run some diagnostics and hopefully get to the source of the problem quickly.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help, positive news the fault seems to have cleared!

I had about 1/4 tank of fuel, so I went and filled it to the brim with Optimax, drove it round a bit, took it home and left it. Restarted, all warnings disappeared! So took it for a more spirited drive and now all seems normal.

Am wondering if I got a 'bad tank of fuel', or it had been sat in secure storage over the summer for 6 weeks, and even though it was started regularly maybe wasn't happy post this.

Its booked into a dealer end of the month anyway for some rattles to be looked at so ill mention it then and see if it has thrown any fault codes up, but fingers crossed....at least currently all seems to be well again

Given the 6-week layup, I suppose the occasional start-up may have led to clogging of the particulate filters (see my post #5), although I would have thought that your 100-mile run should have done the trick to purge them. Who knows? … but the main thing is that you’ve got a result!
