Refurbishing Speedlines

The problem with anodysing is that you need a perfect rim to start with. Merely polishing won't do. Anodysing shows up any imperfection. You get lots of small pits after the anodysing process has been done if your rims have seen any corrosion at all in the past. I have been through this process with Adrian before (a top lad by the way whose work is A1). In the end I got em polished an lacquered and they looked great, but the job won't last me forever.

So, it appears that laquering may be the way to go. What about powder coating?

Powder coating is an excellent finish on a standard 1 piece wheel. I have used laptab in Birmingham many times. They finish with a coating that means brake dust just wipes off.

The down side is that the finish is quite thick, and so some "crispness" is lost particularly on intricate patterns or markings (such as the stibit on RS mags).

I also think that they would not be great on split rim as any pentration of the suface means the whole coating eventually lifts.

Frankly i think the best thing for the Speedlines is to store them in your garage and buy something lighter instead!

Mine were bad enough to need refurbishing but did not have any pitting after anodising. Having said that I did not notice if there was any pitting before.

Having had my car for 8 years and the original Speedlines being well and truly knackered, I bought a new set at vast expense from Porsche in Reading 2 years ago. Car covers about 1500 miles a year and does 2/3 track days. Lives in an air chamber and is not driven when there is salt on the road.

Washing it on Saturday I noticed to my amazement that this set and now showing white crazing around the bolts. I've been in touch with Reading who have said "sorry sir, 2 year warranty was up in June so nothing we can do" so I have now been in touch with PGB re a goodwill claim. Will let you know how I get on.
 
That ll teach u to wash it Mike ! Unless the magnesium centre s are craked, they soemtimes did from stress, reckon ur on a hiding to nothing Mike...........................abt time we had lunch to compensate !
 
I recall they refurbished a few sets which gave problems when the cars were new, certainly worth a try.......If you are succesful, try to get them done by somebody who knows what they are doing!

As much as I like my Speedlines, they are such a liability, or is that pain in the ar-e that I tend to run the car on lighter maintenance free Porsche wheels.
 
Well I will give it a go, nothing ventured etc! Pretty poor that a set of wheels at £3800 fail to last two years in good nick, or even that the fault with the originals has not been fixed.

Problem is that to my eyes the car only looks right on these wheels, so may have to go the anodising route.

Vic, will give you a call, have you still got a 911 or have you sold them all? [:D]
 
I think Clubsport saw the word the lunch , though it must be wortha try with Porsche ..................quite a contentious issue Pork and me right now , the S will be around for a long toime , dont mean to be insensitive , but The Big Orange Taxi may have done its last joy ride at a birthday party at Goodwood last week.............very nice young chap threatening to take it off my hands before i am too slow ...........tell u when i see u
 
No lunch for me Vic, saving myself for the Thanksgiving blow out later in the week, starting in the Lamb at leadenhall...Phillpot Tandoori...then more pubbing....your stamping ground, so if you see me struggling,,,please send me home!

I'd heard of this happening when I had mine re-furbed 4+ years and 30K miles ago......that's why I went anodisong route...my wheels are still perfect.
 
I put my speedlines back on yesterday to sit on in the garage over winter to avoid flatspotting the toyos.

It is when you swap them you realise how heavy they are compared to the BBS mags and how even thought they are clean and live in a dehumidified garage they still deteriorate without use!!!

They do look good though....oh what were Porsche thinking!
 
PGB called back today to ask for some photographs to be sent to them of the offending wheels and white marks.

Will keep you posted.
 
Well Vic, you were right.

Got a very silly response back from Porsche customer relations which said they had checked with their technical department in who's opinion it was because I did not use the car enough that the wheels had deteriorated. Still cannot quite believe this nonsense.

So, if you were thinking of splashing out £3800 on a new set of Speedlines for you RS my advice is don't.

Very disappointed in Porsche GB over this and have written to Andy Goss. Given I also bought a new 997 C4S this year I had hoped to be better looked after.
 
Diamond Styling did all mine .............that was before they moved to Sevenoaks ............meaning i guess they still do
 
I can refurbish and anodise your Speedlines, but they have to be in perfect condition before I start (which rather negates the object!), otherwise the pitting (which cannot be polished out) will be very obvious after anodising. The only real solution is to buy new outers.
 
Not quite sure if we re talking like for like Nick..........annodising on the Speedlines i ve had done is barely noticeable from original finish lacquered, they were not pitted when started, not old enough to have brake dust eating the surface up, just usual lacqueur peel and hence white marks ................they came up really well Chris Talabi , then DS WAS , WITH RESPECT, THE KING OF WHEEL FINISHING..........the Fuchs i ve seen u do so well , start older , likely pitted therfore and end up real 'heavy natt' finish ..................so not sure if that compares ?
