removing S2 cill trim

has anyone removed their cill trim on a S2 ?
I have noticed some ominous rust spots breaking through .
I am thinking of removing the trim for the winter to allow me to treat and keep these areas clean and dry and re-fit them in the summer when I've had the chance to investigate and really get to grips with the rust and treat inside the cills
 
Funnily enough I've done that myself today in this glorious weather and applied some more underseal along the bottom edges of the sill. I last did it two years ago when I painted my sills here:

The long trim is held on by about 6 plastic nuts fastened to bolts hanging down from the chassis. The short one at the front is held on by two plastic nuts and a cross head screw at the front in the wheel arch. It's amazing how much gunk collects in the hidden 'trough' of the sill trim that you can't clean out until it's off the car. I've left the trims off until next weekend but the car looks very wrong without them - like a 4x4 with 3" extra clearance and you can see the jack point hanging down

I'm annoyed that I ran out of time and didn't manage to get the interior carpet off and spray my newly purchased Dinitrol cavity wax in the sill cavitys [:mad:] Next weekend (when it will be pi$$ing it down)
 
thanks thats a brilliant discription. I was tempted to do it today as the weather wasso goodbut I don['t have any rust treatment yet. I didn't want to risk busting the fixings either .
I need to inject my cills . If you get the carpet peeled back are there access holes on the inner cills ?
 
Yes there are 4 or 5 oblong rubber bungs that you can remove for easy access to the inner sill.

Take a look at the recent thread about Peter Empsons body work and you can see them in the pictures where the outer sill has been cut away
 
thanks Paul. I remember asking this question in that particular thread now. I'll have to get some waxoil and look forward to doing it in the pouring rain next weekend lol. I've actually got some carpet spray adhesive so hopefully it will all go back neatly

A while ago I tried to do this but couldn't get the black strip off which holds the carpet down without damaging it , so i didn't bother in the end. How does this strip come off?
 
Does the sill trim actually do anything aerodynamically? Or is it just for show. I still havent got round to re-fitting mine. Some of the plastic nuts sheared with the rusty captive bolts, so I have to find another way of fixing the trim back on. Perhaps with sheet metal screws.

An unorthodox reply ... I managed to bottom-out my S2 on a country road in Shropshire about 4 months ago, over a VERY sharp hump (don't ask), and the plastic cill trims certainly did something then. I was staggered at the fact that they supported the weight of the car (me and a farm lad pushing as hard as possible to shift the car, Mrs Parker steering) and showed nothing more than scraping along their length - scraping that was removed with some coarse sandpaper.

I was fully expecting there to be SERIOUS damage done to the cills, but they were utterly unmarked. Didn't even crack the plastic covers ...

I tried prising my black plastic trim strip up and chickened out at about 9" [:D]
Looks like it might come up in one piece if I'm really careful. Might be worth using a hair dryer on it first to warm up the strip's adhesive.
Gonna be a bitch trying to work the waxoil into the cills around the seats though [:(]

Taking the seats out is easy. You'll end up richer from all the money you find under them too [:D][:D][:D]

[8|]I too bought the Dintrol stuff from Frost but also bought some small bore silicone tubing (about 1.5M was enough) and swapped the brass spray nozzle and the brass 'trigger button' piece from the supplied extension hose to the silicone hose and then fed that down through the vent hole in the door jamb along the length of the sill (needs a little manipulation to ensure that it goes all the way to the end) and then sprayed my heart out whilst slowly pulling the tubing back towards me.

Judging by the amount of the stuff that is still dripping out of the drain holes along the length of the sill, I got to most areas of the sill[:D]

Just got to do the passenger side now. Much easier to work with than Waxoyl, especially using the aerosols. No need to warm it up first either[8|]

I shone a torch down the vent hole, but couldn't see anything too worrying....[:(]

Have also sprayed it up inside the front wings at the point where they are open to the elements just ahead of the front wheels - my drivers side showed some signs of surface corrosion towards the opening, so have drenched that area... ...not to mention my shoes, hands and garage floor...![8|]

Oh come on. You just weren't trying if your collateral damage area was that small. I managed the wife, cat and quite a lot of the neighbours' car as well ... ah well, those are three more things that won't rust in a hurry, eh?

Business plan will involve a Waxoyl spray set, a 944 without rust, and a quantity of mid-brown fluid (waxoyl is fine, and doesn't wash off in the shower - I've tried.)

I wonder if I can persuade the 'clients' to all turn up in bikini's ...

Nick - this gets better and better - thanks! I wonder if you could substitute a cheaper car for the 944 in the business plan. I'm sure a Nissan Micra would work almost as well. Nice old one ... without much rust ...

Between Chelsea and Chelmsford, I suspect there could be a fair bit of business here as well ...
