no bloody wonder that the Insurance industry has such a bad reputation !!

Graham

Graham, I took the policy out in good faith as a good friend of mine runs the brokers. Even he is fed up with them now. When I read the small print saying Gibraltar I sighed & knew this could be trouble. I dread to think what they would be like if ever there was a "Proper" claim to be had.

Waiting for 9am so patiently cracking my knuckles in anticipation...........

They are also saying that if I want a genuine screen then I have to pay the difference in cost to their more than likely Mickey Mouse one :(
Without wanting to spoil your day, have you read your policy documentation? You may well find that is all the cover you have paid for? Unfortunately, it is not uncommon these days and the detail may be buried in the small print.

Without wishing to bang on about it, the Club's policy with Lockton would have had you sorted by now - I have just sung their praises on another thread after I needed a new screen in my 997.

I really hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction and that the job is done right the first time. I learned the hard way when I let a national chain replace the screen in a previous Porsche and they messed it up despite using a genuine Porsche screen so you are right to be thorough.

Good luck.

Kevin,

give Paul a call at Glasstec http://www.glasstecauto.co.uk/

He is well known on Pistonheads (Glassman) and his work comes highly recommended. He is also used to dealing with Insurance companies who recommend 'Gavin' and his mates.

Up until 12 months ago I was recommending the guy based on others but have since used his services. His work and attention to detail is second to none.

He will use Porsche supplied glass and new seals.

Hope this helps

I will certainly switching company's next year when my renewal comes up. I used my broker this time as he insures all our vehicles & is usually excellent. Think he used a dud this time though. I will definitely be ringing Lockton's next year :)

I have said to them that it is their best interest to get the job done right, first time as I will moan if not...........

Bit of a better day today though, Just had a call from one of their managers (Decided to bypass the operators & handlers from now on) & he was actually ok. Has said that the screen will be a green/green top tint, & that they will be using a genuine seal & trim. It is now just a case of "When"..........

I was supposed to be using the car for one of my best friends wedding tomorrow. I suppose I still could but with a cracked windscreen [:(]

Ok, It's been a while but the car went in for it's new screen this morning. Finally managed to get the screen I wanted & all the trim parts & rubber from Porsche after a long battle. Just shows it pays never to give up.

Original company (National Windscreens) who initially bodged the chip repair declined the work saying they couldn't fit the screen & it had to go to Porsche??????? Insurance then instructed Auto Windscreens in Derby to carry out the work instead. I was met by a very enthusiastic Dave who knew a lot about old 911's so I knew the car was in good hands. He removed the old screen then discovered some surface rust in the bottom corners. The worts was a small hole on the drivers side. I went to find some rust treatment whilst he cleaned the surface rust. I returned & treated the spots. He advised me to get it remedied properly by a bodyshop before he fits the new screen. I completely agreed with him so booked it in then took it down later this afternoon. I now await the inspection report along with the quote for the work. Ah well, I suppose I will treat myself to this as my 50th Birthday prezzie in 3 weeks time.......

I can't praise Dave enough for his knowledge, enthusiasm & honesty & it is such a refreshing change to the usual can't be arsed crew..........

Pics of the offending rust. It isn't really bad & looks far worse due to the rust treatment. Still not bad for a 33 year old car & the only rust that I can find anywhere.

Passenger side.....

When I did my total resto the front windscreen came out easily (friend used to work for Auto wind screens) and went back in 1hour also there was no rust there was no rust in the car anywhere

Paul

Groan......................

For the second time I visited Auto Windscreens in Derby to have my screen put in. 6 1/2 hours I waited. Screen doesn't sit properly in the aperture, The rubber is pulling in the top corners so not sealing correctly, the trim is also coming away in the bottom right corner & the top left.

I am supposed to be going away this weekend in the car as it is my 50th & my wife has planned something that involves the car.

I am seething to put it mildly. Non gen screen, gen rubber & trims though. Need to vent..................

Hi Kevin, Sorry to here your screen woes are still not at an end. Quick question... Have the window fitters tried fitting the screen rubber the other way up. I have the later 964 window in my '89 and therefore the screen and rubber is quite different from yours. However, when I had my screen replaced I suspect the rubber was installed upsidedown, it fits Okay without leaks but wish I had checked before the fitters left and maybe the early type are less acomodating. Steve

Hi Steve, I have no idea but would have thought that they would have tried?? Should the seal join be at the top or bottom of the screen?

Kind regards, Kevin

We need someone with a genuine Porsche rubber on an early 3.2 to confirm that one. Do you have a photo of your original set up that you can zoom into to give us a lead and, if you can see the join was your old rubber an OEM part? Steve

Have just spoken with them. They want to try new insert trims. I am still not convinced.

Rang Mike at Zentrum for some advice & he mentioned that there are two different rubber seals for the early cars? 5mm difference. maybe this could be the problem?

If anyone can help than I would be greatly appreciative.

Kind regards, Kevin

The join is at the bottom. They are now wanting the car back next week for, in their words...... "Another go"

I did mention that they had at least 7 "Go's" on Thursday. I also said that if they didn't get it 100% correct next time then I will be taking the car to Porsche & billing Auto Windscreens.

I have also decided now not to use the car for my 50th which has hacked me off somewhat. :(

Be careful, Porsche dealers often sub this work out to Autoglass or other 'specialist' fitters. Difference is the OPC is responsible for the finished job...

Sort of........... Will give it a week to settle. Much better than before but still a little down in the top corners. As said, will let it settle & see
