Report: C2S Cab PDK 24-hour test

Spyderman, Thanks for your report, I'm always interested in hearing other peoples views on other cars, especially Porsche owners as I find it interesting to hear their opinions of the other models within the range- and thats exactly what it is a view / opinion, which we are all entitled to.
I have removed a few comments to bring this back onto track and discussion.

I'm at an advantage that I've met Chris and can say he didn't seem anti anything.. well apart from wind deflectors [;)] which I have to say it was very windy around the neck with out my deflector up and it is amazing how it cuts both the noise and wind down when top down driving- an essential item to be fair.

I had a Tippy box a few years back and loved it... used to amaze me when the Jurnos' took one out for a few hours and came back saying they didn't like them- or possibly understand them.[;)]

As far as a lecture on the PDK I can say we are in talks about such things at this very moment [:)]

I hope I get an invite shortly.....[8D]

So would I Gary, I tried the pdk briefly at Silverstone but I think I'd need a busy weeknds driving at a minimum to come to any view on the PDK let alone conclusion.[;)]

So if you are reading nice Mr and MRs OPC people - a long weekend evaluation loan of a PDK turbo preferably with cermaic brakes please[8|].

Oh and if you could arrange it to co-incide with a 997 register trip out I promise to try and sell it to as many people as possible.[:)][:)][:)]

OK so I can dream[8D]

In comparison to the PDK-equiped Cayman S I borrowed a few months back, Sport Chrono in first-stage "Sport" mode turned out to be a vast improvement on the standard "economy" mode where the gearbox programming is aimed squarely at reducing fuel consumption at the expense of performance. However, even in plain "Sport" I still found the system reluctant to "kick down" to a lower gear - perhaps there is simply so much grunt available from the 3.8 litre DFI engine, it wasn't deemed necessary? I didn't really try Sport Plus as I know it allows the revs to build to a very high level before changing.

Maybe, they could install a gearbox that the user has total control over and can decide on the shift point at will. Maybe have some sort of lever to change the gears and another to operate the clutch.

Though, it would never catch on. [:D]

Thanks Spyderman for an honest review of the C2S PDK.

I am going to get my PDK into the OPC for the software update - the other day I was getting a hesitation on pull away in first gear - almost like the clutch was slipping... I hope the software update will cure this...

I really enjoy the PDK, but I would not blame anyone who ordered a Gen2 manual for the extra envolvement... [:D] (Please don't shout at me Derek! [8|])

Certainly not going to shout. I totally agree with you (apart from the fact that I personally get extra involvement from PDK as apposed to a manual). However, this is all personal preferences. More importantly, I do feel strongly that one should not voice an opinion until one has sufficient experience at what one is voicing an opinion about. Has anyone here said they prefer a manual after driving a PDK car for 1000 + miles?

Yes, people's opinions matter and we are all different, so we have different opinions. All are valid.

Mine are just more valid than others [:D][:D][:D]

Sounds to me like that was a none event of a test drive and all it did was too prove a preconceived opinion that you dont like PDK or the 911 and that your Boxster is a better car...(it may well be and it's a lovely car)
Well, I sure as hell am not going to let that go without a response. Did you actually read my review? All of it? Go and read my last paragraph again.

I had no preconceptions about the 911 as I'd never driven one of any flavour. I had tried PDK before, in a Cayman, and wasn't happy with its response in normal (what I refer to as "economy") mode. I was very interested in how Sport Chrono changed its response - its a significant improvement and I still think its a fantastic gearbox.

If the test drive for me was a non-event, I wouldn't have taken the two hours or so it took me to edit the photos and put together the article. On the contrary, it was a marvellous opportunity to discover just how brilliant the modern 911 is. BMW's tag line is (or was) "the ultimate driving machine" - I don't think so.

Apologises Chris,

It was just the way I read your post no offence meant and I'm sorry if I came across badly and misrepresented what you were trying to say ....can't remember what I said about BMW's but they are quite nice cars. [:D]

Bygones...

Didn't realise people got so agitated on the PDK issue!!!
I think we can safely say each to his own. there is no doubt that PDK is a huge improvement over Tip and yes most people I met at Blenheim and Hedingham said they liked it BUT most agreed the buttons were the wrong way round and this is obviously something Porsche were aware of. I hear the new paddles on the gen2 turbo are to be offered on all 911's once established...my own humble opinion is that will not do much for PDK resale and a retro-fit with new steering wheel etc is bound to be very expensive....
Thought Rob's comparison on gen1/gen2 997 in the Club mag was very interesting....
