Rims

I've been thinking about getting new rims for my 03 S and have a serious yearning for the good ole 5 spoke 18" Carrera Rims.

However, as my car is lagoon green - and I've had a good look at those rims on a car of the same colour in my local OPC, I've come to the conclusion that they just dont look right on the car. They work really well on bright colours - and well what rim doesnt look amazing on a black car !.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are about what rims work on dark cars. I do also like the GT3 rims and the sports design rim ( I think thats what they are called anyway ).

Also, any thoughts on replica rims vs original rims ? I've been told by someone who knows their stuff that a lot of replica rims have a lip on the inside which causes the brake dust to blow out down the side of the car and cause streaking....

Of course this could be jsut an excuse to post photos of your car with its wonderful shoes :)

You asked for it!

If it was me, I'd make sure you got wheels that were available on the car when it was new - I'm a bit of a geek so I know that when I see say a pre facelift car with post facelift wheels that they somehow look wrong. I'd recommend the 5 spokes as you've been thinking about. I think that they DO suit all colours. The sport designs are nice but are apparently a mare to keep clean and in good condition.

Yeah must get arond to that :)

Its currently running on 17" Boxster S II wheels. I'm happy enough with them, but fancy something beefier

Replica alloys weigh in heavier than the real deal, which can affect the way the car rides, handles and feels! Picture of my 18" shoes for you and I have to say this was the most user friendly wheel ever to keep clean inside and out [:D]

I've got the 18" carrera rims on my dark blue Boxster and I think they look as good as it gets. Personally I think if a standard 986 boxster parks beside mine, or even a 986 on 17" rims, it just looks rubbish. They are so easy to clean too. I think you also need to get the crested centres to complete the look. I hate to think how much they are though, a previous owner took most of the hit on mine.

I've got the Sports Classic 17" alloys. I especially like them because the front rims are convex, and the rears are almost concave, a nice touch.....the Sports Classic 2 alloys (18") are nice too, but if you curb them, it will cost you an arm and a leg to repair as they are split rims.....either way, both versions are an absolute pig to clean, but are my favourite along with the GT3 alloys.

The other good thing about the Carrera 5 spokes is that there isn't that much alloy there to connect with a kerb and if you have Conti Sportcontacts the edge is well protected by rubber.

Yup the carrera rims look awesome.. I was just surprised when I saw them on a dark green S and I didnt like them that much.

Then again, I didnt like the black interior with the dark green either ! much prefer the savanna beige combo I got.

There seem to be ok deals out there for genuine rims - about 2k euro with tyres. But I did ask at my 'friendly' opc and was quoted 4k euro plus tyres plus fitting. I'll buy the 2k ones and spend the other 2k on 2 colour coded suitcases :)

I know the attached picture is crap - but its off my camera phone...

that's a nice interior/exterior combo Penfold, pretty rare exterior colour too, I've never seen a green Boxster. I can't see how the 5 spokes wouldn't look good on it, although it looks pretty good anyway, and I usually don't like that particular style of wheel. They certainly don't look as good on a neighbour's black Boxster IMO.

I know some guy who's getting the hang of this polishing lark[;)]
He's getting there....

I think that happens if you link to a photo on a webpage, the thumbnails happen when you upload the photo as a file?

I've only just mastered the art of getting photos onto a hosting site and then onto here!

So, when I click the add an image button, I should delete the http//: part? After that, I'm stumped[:(]

Unless it's OK to carry on as I am?

Sorry to keep plugging them but...speak to Ted in parts at OPC Silverstone. Quoted me a very good deal for 18" 5 spokes + tyres last year. Now waiting for my original tyres to wear quicker !

I have original 18" GT3 type Sport designs. The outer shiny rim goes wich you can have redone but it means you constantly polishing it.
Even when OK they take ages to clean and you can't get inside without taking them off once a month.
Cheers
