Just to finish off this thread people may be interested to know that after writing a letter of complaint to Customer Services at Reading they acknowledged the problem and offered a goodwill contribution of 60% towards the labour for removing and refitting the gearbox and rear main and intermediate shaft seals.
There was a degree of urgency in that the car had to be dealt with immediately, before its 6th birthday, and I suspect regular servicng at the OPC also helped. I believe the 6 year deadline has to do with a provision in the Sale of Goods Act which extends the normal short timescale where there are defects in the goods - the lawyers among you will know more about that. Anyway the final cost was £312.80 + Vat, which I thought was not too bad.
