RMS PROBLEMS

ORIGINAL: YvesD

I am just trying to find what the owners manual says...

You might be surprised !

I just went through the manual and all it says is that consumption varies depending on the viscosity of the oil being used and the environment where you drive.

Hmmm, I think I will double check with my OPC in the morning.

Probably worth a tentative enquiry with the OPC then......

Have you had to buy all your own top up oil ?

Yves

Perhaps we should start a new thread on oil consumption.

A few weeks back I did a quick survey on Rennlist asking for feedback on oil consumption in the 997 in an attempt to get a feel for what is good, normal and excessive. The number of respondents listing oil consumption in the various ranges is as follows:

3 gave < 4,000 miles/litre
2 gave 4,000 to <5,000 miles/litre
4 gave 5,000 to <10,000 miles/litre
3 gave >10,000 miles/litre (including one that claimed no top up in 20,000 miles)

While not statistically significant it looks to me as though < 4,000 is poor, between 4,000 and 10,000 is normal and better than 10,000 is unbelievably good. However, for those feeling depressed with <4,000 miles/litre let me try to raise your spirits. I was searching a Mobil web site for data when I came across this in an answer to a BMW driver's question about drain intervals - "It is also not uncommon for a high-performance engine to require a top-up of motor oil every 2,000 miles. (Most manufacturers consider anything better than 1,000 miles between top-ups as "normal.")" The full Q&A can be found at http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...s_in_a_BMW.aspx

Indeed I have.

I am just trying to recall though when the first oil change is required. Looking at my Maintenance booklet I can only see oil change listed at 2 years or 30k miles. I am sure there is one scheduled before that.

Sorry, we seem to be going off on a tangent here to the original thread"¦

If we all are using Mobil1 oil and we all drive our cars in similar climate conditions here in the UK, then surely we should all be getting about the same oil consumption?!

Perhaps just an oil change would alleviate some of my crazy oil burning...

The main thing is Alex that when you give it fully welly you dont get clouds of burnt oil smoke !

Yves

Alex, an oil change will make no difference to your engine oil consumption rate. I had my oil and oil filter changed at just over 4k miles and as you know, it needed a new engine at 12k. If you have reason to believe you are using too large an amount of engine oil, have your OPC prep your car up for a oil usage check. They will get the car to a certain level (usually full) then you drive the car away and monitor it. After about 600 - 1000 miles go back to the OPC and let them take another measurement. I think it's > 1.6 litres of engine oil burnt to 600 miles = new engine from Porsche... which comes in a box like this:

Gets put into your car like so:

and the old one gets shipped back to Porsche AG:

Just for clarity it's 2 years or 20,000 miles for servicing...

Got a reply from my OPC:

Porsche state that the vehicle can use up to 1 litre per 1000KM (roughly 650miles) which they confirm is an acceptible level for the vehicle to use.

So I 'should' be ok...

I think that this is a high ammout of oil use, but some cars do use alot until they have done 10.000+ miles. I know on modern Porsches 20.000 is the service intervals but f it was my car i would have the oil changed between services as i think this is a long gap on a high performance car.
