Rose silver project

Afternoon all! Bought a nice little car recently. Frenchy will know the car, belonged to Steve down in Wales. Arrived this morning, stuck a battery in and some fuel, checked the belts and away it went then died. Positive coil connection was loose so tightened this and away it went. Had a look round the car and tested all the electrics, they all work. Upholstery not to bad on it, all the motrs work. Slight rot at the front of the rear arch but nothing major, a couple of hours of metal bashing should sort it out and a blast of paint. Nice Turbo S spec with M030 shocks all round, big brakes and LSD with no sunroof which I think is why the body is not rotten. Sills are minty inside apart from the rot at the back corners. All the undertrays are there and everything works as it should. Brakes even look salvageable too. Makes a change from E type engine rebuilding.

these are a rare beast and very worth hanging onto. I'm sure someone will be very pleased with the finished article once you've tidied it up.

I have one like this albeit a custom spec one, Silver paint with a custom black lower section and Red leather interior = Silver Rose but without the pink tartan

Nope, it came as standard with Can Can red leather from the factory and the black two-tone bottom half.

It's definitely one of a kind as I've never seen another 944 let alone Turbo in this spec before. There is a picture of it outside the OPC at Reading from many years ago...

Know that car well Alasdair, i was tempted at one point to get it myself but i would end up chucking a load of money at it, Steve is a nice guy but unfortunately his circumstances dictated that it had to go, restore it and keep it.........................money in the bank as they will surely appreciate at one point.
The car Steve Simkin was going to look at has been sold, he missed a "good un"
Cheers Jim.

hiya alisdair, hope your well, how long before shes "ready"? and is the air-con going to be working? regards jason p

Nice car, really like the Silver Rose cars, remember looking at a brand new one in Dick Lovett's show-room in Swindon when they were new. That was soon after my 21st and the cost would have funded a 2 bed house, fortunately thats the direction I took.

It became fashionable to knock "that" striking upholstery some time ago, but I have to say I really like it. Those who knock it......they drive around on charcoal leather, with black dash, and black carpets.

This recession will bring back those striking colour combinations - witness the GT2RS red alcantara roof lining.

Good luck with it

Had a better look at it tonight. There was a fair bit of corrosion on the back of the drivers sill at the back where it meets the wing. The inner jacking point support was also a bit flaky so have chopped the whole lot out. The other side needs some local patch repairs but will do one side at a time. I will order up a pair of sills tomorrow and get the rest of the drivers side one chopped out as I have a day off. Will give me a chance to try out my new door braces I have had for ages and not used in anger yet!
Did an engine flush and changed the oil, engine quiet as a mouse now. Fitted some 968 castor mounts as well. Will order up a waterpump and set of belts and tensioners as well. Brakes work fine so will grit blast the disks to get rid of the corrosion and clean them up.
Been browsing the receipts and it had a full head rebuild 12K ago with a clutch not long after! Had lots and lots of dough spent on it.

Tony, it was Mr Coxs car, would be good to see the pic, it has a ring sticker on the back. Will be for sale when completed if anyone is interested.
Will have new belts, tenioners and water pump.
Full respray
Refrubed wheels
New T1Rs all round.
Full service
Overhauled calipers front and rear, new front and rear disks.
Miles are high at 188,000 but head gasket done at 174,000 with a full head rebuild. Clutch done at 146,000. Drives nicely, had a spin in it last night before the sill was chopped.

IIRC the interior came form a c40,000 mile car that was broken as well, will look for photo, its in the ring car park, not sure Steve made it out on track, shame he had to sell it on he had it a long time,
Tony

He nought the car in 1996 so 15 years is a long time to own a car. Only 3 owners in the log book. Seemed to be highish miles when he bought it. He swapped the seats with somone one the forum as the rest of the interior is in excellent condition. There is a small tear in the bolster and what looks like a repaired fag burn in the cushion. Seats are 4 motor ones as well, another rarity. Wheels dropped off for refurb today and most of the sill off. New sills ordered from OPC, will be here Monday. Halfway getting driver side wing off and forgot what a job and a half that is with the ABS pump in the road! The brake lines are too nice to chop through!

Jason, the air con was pulling the second fan in so at least something was working. Can try and get it going again, maybe need a new condensor but not too much. I have a very friendly local air con man who is very good so should get it going.

Steve Cox bouight some seats from Simon Butterworth out of a 23k Silverose he was breaking !
The car was mint but for some strange reason had pushed in fornt and rear wings all round ?
As though it had been driven through a gap a foot too narrow, i made comment to Simon about breaking it but it was worth more in bits, i cannot remember who it was now who was a poster on here but i put him onto Steve for the seats they did a swap + cash.
Get those sills filled with some wax when done....................if i win a substantial amount of money i will buy Steve Cox a Silverose.................Gratis !
He is a real nice guy.

Thanks Jim, the seats were all loose in the car so looks like they have been swapped again. The back seats are in the boot and the luggage blind is gone as well as the gear gaiter. Was it Cambridge Motorsport who did the brake lines?
Alasdair

When I bought the car the drivers seat side bolster was very ripped which I lived with for a couple of years having made the usual enquiries from Southbound. I got a new interior from Simon Butterworth and sat in the vehicle display at one PCGB annual meet swapping the bits over, that was the interior from the 23K car that Jim refers to. The reason the seats are loose is that I swapped them out with Chris Charlton's set recently as I thought the car would be broken up for parts and it didn't matter.

Alasdair, I will PM you about the aircon.

Regards,

Steve.
