RS / Cup / RSR engine specs

I'm no expert on the 993 engine but I have done some work on a certain 993 Cup car and a RS modified 993 RS. The cylinder heads are different in some interesting ways to standard 993 ones. The main one being the bottom valve spring seat is chamfered to fit into the counterbore in the head. This counterbore also has a 45 degree chamfer (obvious really) and this gives considerably more metal between the port and the bottom of the counterbore. Net result is a stronger casting and a little more scope with the old porting tools! I guess the RSR heads are the same as the Cup ones. There are a few more differences but I will let you discover these. All in all, Porsche modified the standard head to give them a littel more margin for racing. Sensible really.

So what is my 993 X51 3.8 engine ?

No varioram, rated at 285 BHP when the 3.6 was 272BHP.

But I have been told that it is blueprinted and is effectively a 964 RS 3.8 engine but without the alloy throttle bodies and manifold.

Ninemeisters --- I believe you have seen the car when you set up the geometry with a new set of Billsteins.

A 964RS 3.6 is 260 BHP, the 3.8 is 300 BHP, and the 993RS 3.8 is 300 and the 993RSCup 3.8 is 315 ...

Interestingly, the 964RS 3.8 is more torquey than the 993RS.

Any confirmation would be greatly appreciated.

The engine type is M 64.05 S. 285hp at 6000RPM and 350Nm at 5000RPM --- with 964RS flywheel and RS clutch etc.

Supposedly a full factory 964RS engine --- blueprinted, hand finished, conrods and pistons weight matched, lighter and stronger rods and pistons, bigger valve area, RS cams, RS fueling ---

The Porsche Service document 61015 dated 10.03.1995 VKQ2 covered this.

But I'm still not sure what it is !
