RS UPGRADES

Hmmm... food for thought!

Dont know why i didn't think of southbound, might drop them a line when I've decided on what im doling exactly.

Im thinking of changing my speakers also, but if i were to get the RS doors I would upgrade the rear speakers and leave them intact.

With regards to seats it seems most people opt for recaro Pole position, which i reckon i will use when it comes to that.

Steve, (if you dont mind) would it be possible to see some pictures of your interior so I can gauge to what extent you have stripped out?

Would it also be possible to see other interiors that have taken stripping out to various stages (Carrera Boy seems to have gone the whole hog?)?

Might be worth checking with Southbound trimmers what they charge:

http://www.southbound.plus.com/southbound/products/trim-general.htm

Their prices might be competitive and less hassle than importing from the USA.

I quite like my standard door cards and find the pockets useful for storage when touring. Losing the pockets doesn't save much weight. Hmm, my RS door cards were a straight swap with John Boggiano as he wanted the standard cards from my car. His RS cards already had the two holes for the speakers, so i kept/upgraded my front speakers.

When i get chance to remove the rear wiper and fit rear RS style carpets and trim, I shall remove the rear speakers, along with the whopping great amp that sits under the driver's seat and rewire the front speakers to run direct to the head unit.

My view is that I want the front speakers for the odd distance cruise, but most of the weight to be lost needs to come from the rear end of the car, so those front speakers help balance that heavy lump at the rear...![;)]

I'm curious to get mine on some scales to see where I'm up to - targeting 1200kg

Well, that's put you in your place ,Nick-at least your's is red,the faster colour.[:D]

I should say that I was not trying to be rude, especially about Nick's door cards [:D]. I was just pointing out that the point of the RS door was to get rid of all the luxury weight - door pull, electric window mech, speakers and pockets. Then, it makes a significant difference. On the flip side, I DO agree that even with speakers in, an RS door card copy has much cleaner lines than the standard trim.

One of the nicest strip out jobs I saw up close and personal was Rob Hounslow's old C4. His car also benefited from being a non-sunroof coupe that. He even stripped the vinyl off the centre console and painted it guards red [:)]. However from experience, I can say that if anyone goes that far they have to live with the drone and vibration that comes with it. It was VERY noisy inside at full chat!

Regarding weight, Matt's car (demonfish) is very stripped out. He even took out the glove box! Even then it weighs about 1300 Kg. Mind you it does have a very substantial roll cage.

My own weight loss inside is so far only; Recaro PPs in place of the standard seats, soundproofing removed from front and rear footwells and rear seat backs removed.

Did you just rip out of all the sound proofing and replace the carpets or did you replace with lighter foam?

Here's a link to some pics of Rob Hounslow's old C4 that I mentioned earlier:

I have just fitted rs door panels this week ( £369 + vat from Southbound )These come complete with all fittings icluding red webbing door pulls etc,. I opted to have no speaker holes as I am removing the stereo. I have removed the rear seats and rear wiper and had RS style carpet fitted throughout. I picked the car up yesterday and It looks fantastic. Out of interest the trimmer charged £800 for the whole carpet set supplied and fitted which was half the price that Southbound wanted. I'll PM his contact details if anyones is interested ( He was retrimming a Testarossa and had an Alvis being trimmed in there, so is obviously very capable ) The carpet he chose is very similar to the original, very very lightweight and pliable so that it fits the contours very well. Just waiting for a half cage to come then it will nearly be done ( 12 months later !!!)
I'll post some pics at the weekend when the weather brightens up

ETA: I have also fitted Recaro SPG xl's with Sabelt harnesses

I'll be the first to admit that the decision to remove my soundproofing was partly out of necessity. Years of leaks prior to my ownership meant that it was soaking wet. Not an uncommon phenomenom I believe. Here you can see it was cracking up and it was very heavy when I removed it:

However it was in good shape underneath:

I then filled the void by cutting up one of those lightweight kneeling pads:

P2231173.jpg

And then put a board on top made out of plywood and floor mat. The latter is lighter than the original mat and I prefer the black to the all burgundy carpet that my car is trimmed with:

When I get chance, I aim to replace the board and the form with a track mat that can be fixed direct to the floor. Rennline make some nice ones..pricey...but they look good!

Kev, did they remove the soundproofing and clean it all up as part of the fitting?

....and I'm sure we'd all be interested to hear who did the work [:)]

Steve, When I bought the car last year I wanted to strip the car right down as I had done previously with a 968 CS. I started that EASY[;)] job of removing carpet and glue. All the foam mats in the front footwells and under the rear seats were soaking wet. It had obviously been like it for ages as they stunk and were disintegrating. In my infinite wisdom I binned them only to be told that the fronts were £125 for each side from an OPC!!!!! I gave the car to my trimmer in a raw state of no soundproofing and as much glue removed as my hands could stand !! He recarpeted as much as he could with no soundproofing and built up the sections where the foam moulded mats were removed. The company are called Cartrim ( 01444 411228 ) and based in Anstey, East Sussex. Roger, the owner is a one man band and has previously put new plastic Boxster windows in for me ( £275 out of interest ). He is a car nut and owns a Testarossa. He also makes a great brew !! In the price he also fitted the door panels that I bought fron Southbound. I have some carpet that was left over if anyone needs a sample.

Thanks guys, exacty what i was looking for [:D]

On inspection it seems my soundproofing is a lil damp too, methinks this weekend I'll find out what the underneath looks like!

too many jobs, not enough cash :)

Cant wait to get cracking though, this month its a targa recover and a rear targa bar seal replacement along with bye bye soundproofing task!

The rennlist job looks impressive... (think il introduce myself formally soon)

Thanks for the contact Kev... some more work on its way in the coming months :)

Well at least you know from Kev and myself that wet soundproofing is not uncommon. Sounds like you're soon to discover the delights of the Porsche 964 glue! [:D]

I wait with baited breath[;)]

On a separate note (pointed out by my fellow car enthusiast... he has a triumph spitfire), whats the likely impact of RS upgrades/weight reduction and hence moving away from originality likely to have on value?

A complex issue I guess?

In all honesty its not something I've been thinking about as I dont ever want to have to sell the car, but in the unlikely situation I do, its a valid and sensible question (my minds been on upgrades and improvements)!

Steve,
I know you're not capable of being rude-what I wonder about is:_Did you weigh the bits you took out, weigh the stuff you put back instead(including the plywood),because there doesn't seem to be much weight saving apart from the water in the original stuff-maybe it was Heavy Water.Seems a lot of work to save 1-2 lbs.[8|]

Strangely, I did but only using bathroom scales! [:D]

From memory, changing the front seats, removing the rear seat backs and removing the footwell soundproofing reduced the weight by about 42 Kg. Each front seat saved 15 Kg (the original seats are very heavy) and removing the rear seat backs saved 7 kg. Sound proofing of the four footwells totalled 6 Kg. This was replaced with less than 1 kg - this was mostly the two front pieces of plywood (none in the rear). The foam was a few grams. But you're right that the soundproofing was about a kilo heavier than it should have been due to the water it had soaked up (the main impetus for me to get rid of it).

I've got most of it in the loft so could check it again, except for the driver's footwell soundproofing which I finally threw out after a year because it still hadn't dried out [:D]

had a look at my sound proofing today.... WET!

Good news is what lies beneath is looking in fine condition!

I Sorted one of the rear footwells out and I'm waiting to get some foam and plywood before i attempt the front footwells!

On separate note i finally changed my power steering hose today (the one the previous oner bought which i decided to fit myself... I feel all accomplished :)

There was one casualty which was a rubber bush housing a bolt on the front side of the air filter casing! does anyone have any tips on how to find this part number?

oh yeh... 911 glue SUCKS![:(][:)]
