rust repair

A new wing is about £400 from Porsche. I shopped around for cheaper but didn't have much luck. You can add a couple of hundred pounds for fitting and painting probably. If the rust is not too bad you could have a patch repair welded in - I have been quoted £200 per wing, and am getting mine done next month.

Does any one have a rough idea of how much a new front wing costs to have fitted and painted on a S2, also the car has rust on the bottom on the rear wing where it curves around to meet the wheel arch. IS this common?

Hi Colin not sure how common the rust on that part of the wing is but i know they do tend to rust where the wing edge meets the front bumper and i have seen many that have rusted in the bottom of the rear arch as this area seems to collect all the muck and then if not cleaned will have the affect you see in your photos... Checking that the drain pipes in the rear inner arch are where they should be will also help stop this general area rusting ... Steve.

You might be able to patch repair those. Rust in those places is not unusual. You'll need to find a good body repairer - don't go to someone who just does painting - they will be a waste of time

Sounds like drain pipes which I am not familiar with ... can you give us a better description of these Steve? Thanks. Oli.

Im sure there in both sides and i think they run down from the sun roof or the top of the rear hatch but mine are a white almost see through type of plastic, these then appear in the inner rear wing below the battery and the same on the other side, they then go through a holed rubber gromit in the bottom of the inner wing to the out side of the car...the pipe seems to only just reach through the hole and if something is stored in these areas which i do sometimes the pipes can be pulled back through the gromit which will then of course fill this area with water and in time result in the obvious ..rusting and then lots of welding ...Hope this helps...

Just had mine done with similar repairs, though not quite as bad as yours colin. My sills were fine, but I've had 2 new front wings fitted, rear arches welded & filled, door bottoms repaired, lower section re-stoneguarded, inside sills waxoyled & virtually both complete sides of the car repainted, plus a couple of other bits such as wing mirrors repainted. Hopefully I'll be getting it back tomorrow. Total bill is going to be around £1200! I'll post up some pics of the work from start to finish when I get chance to sort them out. Cheers, Robbo

That sounds very cheap if it includes the cost of two brand new front wings?! I'm being ripped off if that's the case....[8|]

I am also thinking of replacing the 2 front wings too. Are the used ones any good or they are more likely dented and rusty?

I put a 2nd hand nearside wing on mine and though not perfect you cant tell which wing was replaced as I managed to get one in white. Just holding out for a nice drivers side wing in white now.

When I needed one all the breakers said their stock had some signs of rust so I steerd well clear. Genuine wings are £400, aftermarket pattern ones start around £200

Sorry, that post was a bit misleading. The wings I got were 2nd hand - I searched for ages to find good ones, they are like the proverbial rocking horse do-do. The ones I eventually got (from different sources) one was near perfect & one needed a tiny repair on the bottom lip. The cost of these wasn't included in the bodyshop price, I sourced these myself at a total cost of around £280 (plus petrol money, trailing up & down the country for them!). My bodyshop guy advised me to avoid pattern wings as he had once fitted one on his S2 Cab & said it was rubbish! I've now seen my beloved more or less finished & she looks superb! like a brand new car again. Hopefully I'll be picking her up tonight & taking some more photos. Cheers, Robbo

Sorry for not being quite technical. What are the pattern wings? Fibreglass? If I manage to source a good used one, does it matter if its a different colour? I assume the body shop will need to repaint it anyway.

Pattern wings = wings not made by Porsche, but supposedly to fit Porsche cars. Used wings can be resprayed, but if they are already a bit rusty (or more than slightly dented) then it's a false economy. And I am told it is quite easy to damage them getting them off the car as well. Oli.

Yup, my bodyshop guy says he doesn't know how breakers manage to get them off in one piece, he literally had to cut my old wings off. Perhaps that has something to do with the silly prices they go for 2nd hand! Cheers, Robbo
